For the most part, I like fish best when it isn't fishy. My favorites are swordfish and salmon (in the form of salmon burgers, that is - cooking it makes the fishiness magically disappear). Tuna is good when baked in casseroles. I've never tried mollusks, and I'm not a big fan of shrimp because it has that, well, shrimpy taste to it (for lack of a better term).

Knowing Yiffy Kitten, the only thing better than a cake with a stripper inside would be a cake with a stripper holding a bottle of Bailey's Irish Cream and a few quality pr0n vids for good measure. Happy birthday...NARF!

I have ligyrophobia, a fear of loud noises. There's a loudness and sharpness threshold beyond which a sound will affect me. Sustained loud noise, like a concert, doesn't freak me out because it doesn't startle me (it does get to me after a while, but that's a different issue). It's the sudden ones, like popping balloons or fireworks, that set me off. You know how you jump when you're startled? Imagine your stomach doing that as if someone jerked it upward quickly. Noises used to do that for a while, but lately, they cause this unpleasant crawly sparkly sensation across my back.

The special effects get even more interesting if I happen to be surprised by a particularly horrific noise. When I was a kid, my family went to Colonial Williamsburg, and we were watching some show that involved a cannon. Said cannon fired without warning. I convulsed, my knees turned to water, and I almost fell over. And then there was the time when I saw Les Miserables on a school trip, and some Einstein in charge of sound thought it would be really fucking cute to simulate gunfire with blanks so loud that they made fireworks sound like those little white party snaps. I can tolerate fireworks with my hands jammed in my ears to dull the sound. These blasts set off my reactions even though they were muffled, and I was panicking until the scene ended.

Thankfully, I haven't been in an icky situation like that in years, but I still get edgy around balloons, especially when I'm checking out at the grocery store and I can hear them being blown up. Sometimes I've been around when they popped, and they're LOUD and they echo, as if adding insult to injury.

Yoshi ARR - I hated that Game Over screen in Zelda 2, too! I always used to do the quick reset (Up + A or whatever it was) because I didn't want to run out of lives and face squicky Ganon.

On the subject of deep water - That used to bother me a lot, and I still don't like to walk around where I can't see my feet because I'm bugged by the ideas of dropoffs. I also wouldn't want to do any swimming in deep, murky water. I can swim just fine, but it's that unknowing aspect that bothers me. I think I just have to be sure that I'll be able to get back to shallow water when I need to. Deep clear swimming pools (and oceans - this is one reason I enjoyed our family's 1993 trip to Aruba so much - you can see the bottom even when it's 30 feet deep) are A-OK.

I refuse to buy new CD's put out by RIAA-affiliated artists. I know that sucks for the artists, but I don't want the evil extortionist cartel making any money off of me. I just keep trolling the local music store to find stuff used, so I can get full albums legally and support a nifty business at the same time.

I'll happily purchase new CD's by artists on non-shitty labels. Lately, I've gotten some good releases from Bad Religion, Dropkick Murphys, and Mary Prankster (I even got a MP beater tank, too, because she just kicks so much ass ). The aforementioned local store carries lots of random and indie stuff, which is another reason I want to support them.

Posted on 03-19-04 07:33 AM, in Games You've Abandoned Link
Game abandonment has been standard operating procedure for me for a while. I'll have fun playing, but then for whatever reason, I lose interest in actually completing the game. I made myself beat Silent Hill 3 because I wanted that unlimited submachine gun, but I haven't picked up my replay game in a while, and I haven't finished a bunch of other good games that I've gotten in the past year.

Dark Cloud 2 - This is a very, very good game...but for some reason, it's not crack on a DVD like the original was. Damn it...I liked trawling backfloors looking for gems, I liked finding pieces of town to assemble, and for some reason, I also liked how you didn't get that much backstory about the characters because it let me drift along in a peaceful daze. I really can't explain that, but it's true. Dark Cloud 2 had random dungeons and upgrading weapons, and it also had a nifty invention system, but that wound up being more tedious than fun for me because you'd find clues everywhere and you either have to have a psychotically good memory or write them down (or just look in the strategy guide). Still, I thought it was pretty ghetto that the game couldn't at least keep a basic clue notebook for you. Your little dude wrote so much other stuff down...I mean, why not? I also didn't like that they changed the system of rebuilding areas. In the original Dark Cloud, you found people, places, and things inside Atla balls, and if you put it all back together so everyone's wishes were satisfied, you'd get a prize. In Dark Cloud 2, you have to build stuff out of parts and recruit people to populate the towns. That's more flexible, but since I was always more into puzzles than Legos, it just didn't appeal to me nearly as much as digging through the dungeon all excited to see what sort of stuff I was going to find.

Metroid Prime - Once I found out that this was not, in fact, a "fly around with guns blazing and if you hesitate for a nanosecond, you're fux0red" sort of FPS, I gave it a try and really got into it. Then I got busy with other things and didn't feel like picking up where I left off. (The controls are well-done, so that's not really a problem, but I'm one of those people who has to check the map every 5 seconds, so I have trouble getting reoriented quickly.)

Final Fantasy X-2 - I'm pretty close to the end, but I want to beat Via Infinito first, and that requires a lot of leveling up. And I'm lazy. Plus, playing that game would remind me that I should be working on my Rikku costume instead.

I have a Fender Strat which I haven't practiced in about a bazillion years because I just haven't been inspired to play. I'm decent, but I'm definitely a rhythm guitarist - I can parse some pretty complex piano music by ear (including some of Tori Amos' stuff!), but I'll hear a guitar solo and just go DUUUUUUUH. I need to pick it back up again, though, because some songs that I enjoy playing are just more fun on guitar. For instance, "Star of the County Down" (an Irish folk song) has a ton of fast chord changes that are simple on guitar but rather annoying to do over and over and over again on the piano (e.g. Am F C G Am F E).

The only not-obviously-Rydain names I've used here are Darth Narf, Narf Vader (both during the Star Wars fad) and Uncle G-funk (during a sex change).

I'm a total Mozilla fangirl. The suite works, but I recently switched over to Firefox (and Thunderbird for email) because of the speed difference (even on my sick bastard dual Athlon 1800 MP puter running Debian Linux and a light window manager - XFce - Firefox is noticeably faster) and also because I finally found a nice theme (Mostly Crystal) that's available for both. (Yes...I am an eye candy fiend. ) Even on my Win2K box at work, I run Firefox - IE's rendering engine hasn't been updated since 2001, and it doesn't have tabbed browsing and the ability to install an extension to provide pie menus (read: mouse gestures with visual feedback), which have become indispensable to me.

I voted XMMS because I use Beep Media Player, which is a fork of XMMS that uses GTK2 for rendering (read: it has perty antialiased fonts, and I like perty shit, so there ya go). I like the Winamp-style interface and the skinability, so it works for me.

I love my computer. *huggles it*

OS: Debian Linux unstable (it's not actually unstable at all...my record uptime is ~120 days...they're just extremely anal with their testing )
Window manager: XFce (gorgeous, simple, fast...uses GTK2 without the bloat of Gnome)
CPU: 2x Athlon 1800 MP (w00t)
Hard drive: A 16 gig and a 6 gig (yeah, that sucks, but we have a fuckton of network storage on our router, so I just store documents and installed stuff on my computer and use the router for everything else...however, I do have an 80 gigger on standby, so whenever I bug Rando to install it, he shall do so)
Memory: 512 MB DDR RAM
Video: ATi All-in-wonder 8500DV
Sound: SoundBlaster Audigy 2
Monitor: Philips brand 21" of some sort

Is there anything that makes you punch the radio when you hear it? For me, it's that godforsaken Nickelback song that starts out with "I like your pants around your feet". I'm not averse to songs about sex (hell, I'm a big fan of E-Rotic, which is a Eurodance group that puts on amusingly campy and catchy tunes about this woman who has relationships with all these different guys), but this song is just irritatingly dirty.

Legion - You make a good point about such a lame enemy dropping such a w00t weapon. Wouldn't the Crissaegrim have been the perfect prize to win from, say, Galamoth? (For the record, I beat that hoser without the Beryl Circlet just so I could say that I could...but the extended mist item - whatever the hell it was called - did help a lot.)
