Are you talking about the game with that exact title or one of the other two Addams Family games (Pugsley's Scavenger Hunt, Addams Family Values)? If it's the first and you want some help, look here. I didn't think it was that difficult, but that was partially because I had a Nintendo Power that told me where the awesome 1-Up stash was. Are you using a controller? If not, try to get one - that will help majorly.

I only have my ears pierced (though I don't wear earrings very often because I'm lazy) and I'm not interested in having anything else pierced because it's just not me, but I do not consider others' safe and responsibly done body modifications to be "barbaric" or "mutilation". Though I may not personally wish to pierce my eyebrow, navel, lip, or whatnot, I don't see what the damn big deal is as long as people are responsible about it, having their work done in a sanitary environment by a piercer who knows what they're doing and then keeping the piercing clean while it heals. Their body, their sense of aesthetics, their business.

* 1.75 liters vodka, the least expensive brand that you can find (this is crucial)
* 6 cans light beer
* 4 liters Sprite or 7-Up
* .33 liters lime juice
* 2 cans Country Time pink lemonade frozen concentrate

jesus tap-dancing christ, that sounds like either a great party or a lot of vomit waiting to happen (or hey, how about both?)

Heh, you got that right. My office mate says that it's pretty easy to drink way too much of it before you know you're approaching your limit.

The most recent one I have (which is from last year)

Honestly, it's barely changed since then. I have a different abstract wallpaper and I'm using a different Xfce4 theme and icon set, but that's really about it. Due to longstanding motherboard issues that have gotten much worse lately, this system is on its way out anyway. I'll post a new screenshot once my brand spanking new system gets here later on in the week...

Hee hee hee...my incoming computer is a Power Mac, so I'm going to have OS X purtiness to show off, too. I can't wait to see how yours is set up. Other than installing Apple's X11 and an expanded command set for the shell, I have no idea where to start customizing mine...

As far as Photoshop is concerned, I would suggest looking for cheaper older versions of the software online. If you're a student, you can probably get a discount on a new version. Mmm...edumacational pricing... *Homer drool*

Many open-source packages can be installed for you via Fink, which uses Debian's packaging system (which, in my experience, works quite well). You need Apple's implementation of X11 installed first, but that looks like a simple download from their website.

On the subject of emulators: Snes9x is available for OS X. It should be pretty obvious what console Genesis Plus emulates.

I wouldn't say she's the MOST overrated because she has some ability to compose music, play an instrument, and sing...but Alicia Keys' piano-playing skills are quite overhyped. Many people seem to be impressed with any sort of piano work because it is commonly perceived to be an extraordinarily difficult instrument, but her arrangements that I've heard are on about the same level as playing three simple guitar chords over and over again, and I never saw the Ramones getting their asses kissed as some sort of guitar gods. Vanessa Carlton is better, but she's not the OMFG BEST PINIST EVAR ROFFLES either. If people want to give these artists credit for playing their own instrument with some proficiency, that's fine and dandy, but it chafes my ass to see them held up as comparable in skill to insanely talented pianists like Tori Amos.

Argh. I just read some of the plot summaries on IMDB, and it does sound crappy indeed. I loved the first movie because it started with unexplained freaky shit, revealed more about said shit as it progressed so you eventually got a good idea of what was going on, and still left enough blanks for you to fill in on your own. (Incidentally, this is why I loved Silent Hill 2, but that's another discussion topic entirely. Let's just say that I think horror is best when there's well-told mystery involved and the true nature of the horror is never fully explained so you can interpret it for yourself.) This one presumes to tell us more about Samara, but the mystery there just seems like extraneous information tacked onto a boring plot. Thanks for taking one for the team to warn us about the sucktacularity of this movie.

I'm making the switch as well. The ultra w00t 9000's motherboard has begun its downward spiral into utter craptacularity. I used to get 3+ months of uptime easily, but now it locks up at least once a day with disk timeout errors. Replacing the motherboard and processors would cost a hell of a lot (nearly $2000 - no, really - believe me, the original mobo + procs cost FAR less when we first got them, and at the time, they were high-end), and of course, there would be the added overhead of installing them, making sure the rest of my hardware works OK, and reinstalling Debian. I'd been drooling over OS X for a while because I am a Unix fangirl, I love the interface (it's perty, a dock would be MUCH more useful to me than a taskbar, and Expose is mexcellent), and it's reported to work beautifully and only improve as new versions are released. Thus, buying a new Power Mac was the natural choice. I may miss ZSNES, which can't be run even under X11 on a Mac due to its fuckpile of x86 assembly language, but eh, whatever. Much as I generally like Debian, some aspects require tinkering. For a while, I enjoyed learning about Linux by doing (or by watching Rando fix something that I didn't know how to fix), but at this point in my life, there are other hobbies I'd rather spend time on and I want a system that Just Works.

So...the new system is arriving on Tuesday...and I'm sure Tarale's links will come in handy for me as well.

My two favorite window managers, Enlightenment and XFce4, have an iconbox that works sort of like the dock in that you can "park" applications there. XFce4 also has a configurable panel that can launch applications for you. From what I've read, it seems that the dock serves both those functions at the same time and offers more options as well (like popup menus over each application that let you do certain tasks, like, say, pausing the music in a media player, without having to show the window first). I love how it uses icons instead of descriptive text because it's space-saving and pertier and more informative at first glance.

I also have a graphics tablet that's been taking up closet space since I switched to Linux. I was afraid to try to get it to work because I feared it would take a ton of painful effort. Now I'll actually have reason to not only use it but save up for a bigger one if I want to. Huzzah.

Out of curiosity, what was Windows doing that chafed your ass? Was the computer specifically misbehaving itself, or do you just not like to work in Windows for whatever reason? The Windows machines I've had over the past two years at work (my old 2K box and my new XP one) generally behave themselves well, but there's just something about the interface that slows me down. Getting dual monitors helped because I could stick my terminals in one window and keep an eye on them at all times or put up a web application that I'm working on in one window and the source code in the other, but still, there's really no elegant way for a taskbar to handle all the stuff I have open at once (before anyone asks, I'm aware of the XP superbutton, but it doesn't help you much if you have a ton of different applications open at once). I've gone with the "increase its height, losing screen real estate but keeping the buttons mostly legible" option. A XP and OS X comparison site pointed out an interesting aspect of the different OS' dialogues that I'd never really noticed but can have an effect on your working speed. Since I read that, I noticed that GTK2 applications tend to use more OS X-ish confirmation dialogues as well.

We have a hardware router that acts as a firewall. Lucky us.

Aaaaaand...I'm typing this from my new computer. *insert ta-da flourish here* I've had it up for about an hour, and it is schwEEEEEET. My biggest problem thus far is remembering to use the option key instead of Ctrl for keyboard shortcuts (except within the terminal, of course...arrggghhbllrggh Uuuunix *drool*) and trying (without much success) to connect to our private file server to get all my old stuff back. My computer can find it...it just won't authenticate me for whatever reason. Eh, I'll bug Rando when he gets home.

Vampire - I infer that you're referring to evolutionary biology, as I've never heard anyone claim that evaluating functions in math class was OMFG TEH SATAN. However, I've seen evolution maligned about umpty bazillion times in this manner, and I've never come across a satisfactory rationale for said maligning, so perhaps someone can enlighten me. Evolution is defined as change in the genetic makeup of populations over time. Evolutionary theory explains what causes these changes. How is using biology class time to teach the study of a process known to occur in populations of lifeforms in any way, shape, or form relevant to losing sight of morals?

Sorry I can't help you directly...I've only used Debian, and XFree86 was all packaged up nicely for me, so I just went with that. My husband has installed Gentoo, so I can ask him if he ever got X.org to work. In any case, this is more of a HW/SW forum thread, so I'm going to move it there.

You can also try some extensive Googling. I've solved all manner of bizarre Linux issues after finding random posts on mailing list archives that described the same problems that I encountered. Try searching for your specific build errors or just X.org and Gentoo in general.

I don't want a Pikachu. I would worry about getting electrocuted if I ever had to bathe it.

In all seriousness. I don't want a dog. I wouldn't want to have to get up and take the animal outside every time it had to go to the bathroom and take it for walks daily, bringing a bag along in case it has to take a dump along the way. (Our yard is open, so it wouldn't be safe to just let the dog run around out back.) I wouldn't want to have to give it regular baths. I especially wouldn't want a boisterous dog because it would severely chafe my ass to come home to WOOF WOOF WOOF *jump on me* *slobber*. I know that lots of people love doggy attention, but I don't. I prefer my cats, who are friendly and cuddly without being loud or obtrusive and don't require quite as much work from me in order to live happily and healthfully.
