Colleen - That pretty much describes it. Similarly, certain special interest and OS boards (Game Design and Programming and UNIX/Linux are two that come to mind offhand) tend to attract smarter, more well-behaved people. Sure, there are occasional arguments over Windows vs. *nix, but generally, the conversation quality is pretty good.

windwaker - True, true...I totally forgot about that. For pictures, I usually just visit the external review links. Some of those sites are choked with ads (like, as you mentioned, Gamespot), but I ignore or block them. Unfortunately, I don't know of any major site with picture articles that doesn't have a buttload of ads.

If you're worried about being mistaken for a gay man you must be quite a snazzy dresser and have excellent hair and hygiene. (Stereotypes I know, but in many cases it's true.)

Besides, how exactly does the legal definition of the word "marriage" affect whether or not two people walking down the street will be generally perceived as a couple? If a pair of people are walking along and acting affectionate towards one another, I'll think they're together regardless of whether or not they are able to become legally married in my state. If they're just walking along platonically, I'm not going to read anything into it. And this is assuming I'm even paying attention to other people...I'm oftentimes just lost in my own thoughts and don't really care.

Furthermore, what exactly is so horrible about having a stranger think you're gay? I can understand this if you live in a very homophobic region and you don't want to get harassed, beaten up, or killed. But if you're intrinsically bothered by the thought of being perceived as gay and it doesn't have anything to do with your personal safety, WHY?

Pffffft...you're nowhere near old. It's all in how you feel. I'm probably going to make it to forty without starting to feel like an old lady.

WHOA! Nice pic! You look downright badass.

What kind of coat are you wearing? It looks similar to the outback riding duster I recently bought. Mine has a shoulder cape...does yours?

Oh yeah...and do you and Darknean still want to mosey on down to State College at some point? (Or if I get either of the two new jobs I'm looking at, I will have enough vacation time to travel...it probably wouldn't be until after Otakon, though. I'm making two difficult costumes this year. Whoopee. Maybe I should shut up until I actually get another job. I'm paranoid about jinxing myself. )

I've been playing piano for over 20 years. I started lessons when I was four, stopped them at about age ten, and just kept working at it on my own over the years. I teach myself music by ear, and I've been writing my own "OMFG girl and teh piano!" music since before I even knew Tori Amos existed. One of my goals in life is to play as well as she does. I'm pretty good, though...I can proficiently play complex arrangements (including some of her songs - "Carbon" is my current favorite to perform) while singing. On average, it takes me about an eon and a half to finish a piece of music and lyrics because inspiration comes in fits and spurts and I'm anal about not throwing in any old garbage just to fill in the gaps, so I'm never going to make any money as a singer/songwriter. I'm just trying to finish off and polish some tunes so I can put them on teh intarweb for people to enjoy (or rip on or whatever). I do have the capability to record piano and vocals, but I haven't made recordings of some of my finished tunes because I haven't set up any music recording software on here yet (we just reinstalled Debian not too long ago) and I need to practice them more before I'll feel comfortable starting to record them.

I also play electric guitar, but at that, I'm at best decent. I can play most chord progressions, play bar chords, and do reasonable covers of simple strummy songs (e.g. R.E.M.'s "Swan Swan H"), but I just don't connect to the instrument like I connect to the piano. On piano, there's basically a direct line between the sounds in my head and the motions of my fingers, so I can do all sorts of interesting right-hand gymnastics without thinking about it much. Trying to play anything complex on guitar is a confusing jumble that I have to meticulously plan out.

Trapster, I take that as a compliment. I feel like I'm in my early twenties, and I don't see that changing anytime soon. I don't wanna grow up! I'm a Toys 'r Us kid! *dances around the room like a doofus* It also helps that I look pretty young, too. I doubt I could pass for high school age any more, but I do get carded all the time. It's even more amusing for Rando, who is several months older than me. We flew over the winter holidays, and a worker at the airport actually asked him if he was over 18. I swear, the guy does not age.

Debian unstable is teh w00t. I've been running it exclusively on my dual Athlon machine for over two years. I like it because it's free and very stable (despite its name), and it offers an assload of quality free software to choose from (and a well-designed package management system making it simple to add and remove said software) and different desktop environments to use as well. (I honestly don't care for the "taskbar + desktop icons + start menu" paradigm - I prefer multiple desktops, a box to put minimized applications in, and a menu that I can access by clicking on the desktop. I ran Enlightenment for a while, but I'm now using XFCE4 because it has antialiased fonts and can be made to behave in mostly the same way.) I can do pretty much anything I want to under Linux. If I were into computer gaming, serious graphics editing, or fancy music production, it wouldn't be the right OS for me, but as it stands, I have no complaints.

We have this for the PS2. It used to take a ton of fiddling to get it to boot because it's a CD game and our console has some trouble with them (it's almost four years old), but we stuck it on our new HD-Loader, so that won't be a problem any more. This is a great game. I've been a fan of the Street Fighter engine for years and years, and I love the insane variety of characters to choose from. I just wish the music were better (fighting to jazzy lounge tunes just doesn't do it for me) and that we had some arcade-style controllers. I royally suck at the game at home because I can't get the PS2 controller to do what I want it to and my fingers get very tired very quickly.

Yes, I have, and I've used both. When I refer to serious or high-end work, I'm referring to the level on which professionals operate, not just making nifty crap at home. GIMP is pretty nice for its price (I recommend it to people looking for free/cheap graphics software), I enjoy using it for my graphics editing needs, and it's fine for most people's needs. However, it still lacks features that I liked in Photoshop, such as dynamic layer effects, and like Tarale said, it lacks features that are essential to graphics pros. For example, those who work with print media need a color matching system to ensure that the image will look exactly the same when printed. This Slashdot comment I found while researching the issue explains it a bit more.

As far as sound is concerned, Rosegarden (which I haven't played with yet) is much more capable than Audacity. It's billed as a free alternative to Cubase. It does look pretty helpful, but I would need more than that if I wanted to basically set up my own home recording studio. I don't know of any Linux software that will allow me to make custom patches for my Yamaha S80 and upload them to the keyboard. (The S80 does have a nice selection, but MIDI composition just isn't the same unless you can roll your own sounds.) I know you can hook up the keyboard and dump data back and forth, but I can't find any interface for patch editing.

Firefox and Thunderbird. The full suite has applications (a chat client, an HTML composer) that I'm never going to use (I have other software I prefer for those purposes), so it just feels like too much to me. Besides, since the Mozilla project is geared toward ultimately producing standalone applications, I wanted to go with the products that I felt represented the goals of Mozilla development.

Posted on 02-09-05 06:57 AM, in Window Manager Link
I first tried Enlightenment about three years ago because KDE was behaving weirdly on my computer for some reason and I felt like giving an unusual desktop environment a shot. After a few days of getting used to its minimalistic style, I realized that I vastly preferred said style to the taskbar + desktop icons paradigm of KDE and Gnome. I like to scatter windows around on multiple virtual desktops, which covers up desktop icons (and therefore makes them more annoying than useful because I don't want to have to go hunting for them under windows). I don't need a taskbar telling me where everything is all the time. I do like a place to put minimized windows, but an iconbox works better for that because it's small and inobtrusive. Enlightenment's application menu, which you click on the background to access, made sense to me because I could bring it up pretty much anywhere instead of having to click on a "Start" button every time and it only appeared when I needed it.

The one aspect of Enlightenment that got on my nerves was its lack of antialiased fonts. When I heard about Xfce, which is built with GTK2 but can be configured to behave much like Enlightenment, I gave it a shot, and it's now my window manager of choice. The main differences I notice between it and Enlightenment are that it has a launcher panel and its pagers aren't quite as fancy. At first, I didn't particularly care for the launcher panel, but now I like it because it basically consolidates the functionality of pagers and the Epplets I used to run. It's very customizable, so I didn't have any trouble getting it into an inobtrusive configuration that I find useful. As far as the pagers go, they still let you drag windows from one desktop to another, but you can't reposition them with the pager. They snap to whatever position they had before you moved them. For example, if you drag a window in the upper righthand corner of one desktop, it will always wind up in the upper righthand corner of wherever you moved it to. Honestly, this has never inconvenienced me and I can see how people might prefer the pagers to behave in this way, but it would be nice to have the ability to reposition windows using pagers if you wished to do so.

Are you implying that because Rando and I are undecided on the entire child issue and may therefore decide not to have any, our relationship is not serious enough for us to deserve the slew of benefits conferred by legal marriage?

I have perfect pitch, too. For me, telling notes apart is like hearing colors. It generally works well and automatically when the notes aren't extraordinarily high or low, but near the ends of the piano and beyond, they start to get ambiguous. I also get confused by notes that fall between half-steps on a standard Western scale. Trying to categorize those is rather like trying to determine whether a color is red-orange or orange-red.
