My dad had a cat named Mees (thanks to my little brother, who was two and therefore didn't know very many words yet). Chester and Cookie have all sorts of very undignified nicknames generated by mangling their names and adding rhyming nonsense words or silly suffixes (e.g. Cookity Wookity Ding Dong, Chester Wester Woo). I called Chester Softy Wofty for a while because he has an especially plush coat...and I made the mistake of adding the "Ding Dong" suffix when a friend was over. This was after Chester had been neutered, so said friend still teases me about it.

I actually prefer it in single player...but that's probably because the people I tried multiplayer with had to spend at least a couple of minutes beating the crap out of each other before moving onto the next screen. The game really is lots of fun by yourself, though, especially if you're a fan of Link to the Past. The dungeon puzzles aren't as complex as they are in other Zelda games (because that would have made things horrendously annoying for multiple players), but it's still worthwhile to play alone. When I first got the game, I played through it myself in a weekend because I couldn't put it down.

Unless you managed to glitch the game or something, don't restart. You might not actually need the boomerang for what you're doing. (I thought I needed a different item to kill a certain boss, so I redid the level...but it turns out that they had placed the correct item nearby and I wasn't using the proper technique against the boss.) If you do, there's either a way to get back to it or another boomerang item placed somewhere that you can reach it.

Yeah, it does. I played a few rounds of the battle mode with the same people, and I liked it much better than multiplayer adventure mode. I never played the GBA game, but from your description of its multiplayer adventure mode, I think I would enjoy it. I guess they changed things around for the GC version because they wanted the main action to take place on the TV and "indoor" spaces to be shown on each person's GBA, and it would have gotten way too confusing to have the TV split into multiple screens so everyone could be in a different spot if necessary. They probably thought adventure mode would be more fun with a competitive aspect as well. (After all, beating up your friends makes them lose Force Gems...)

You can play single-player GC Four Swords without the GBA. Whenever you go into one of the "sub" areas that is normally shown on the GBA, it appears on a small overlay window on the TV screen. You can press a button (Z, I think) to toggle that window. I played through the entire adventure mode using the normal GC controller.

Admittedly, I've only played a small subset of the games on the list. Out of the choices given, I'll go with Yuna because she's just very likable to me. Yeah, I know she's all stuck on Tidus and all, but she seems cute and fun, so I don't care.

...yep.

It seems like the service is going to remain the same, but we won't really know until it happens. I just hope the new TOS doesn't turn out to be annoyingly anal-retentive, which sometimes happens in order to make corporate lawyers happy. At least I have Meow Mix to fall back on if I don't like what LJ becomes, but I'd miss the friend- and community-based features that got me onto LJ to begin with. Then again, maybe I could convince all of my good friends on LJ to jump ship to DeadJournal instead. Eh, let's just wait and see...

Yeah...that licensing debacle is exactly why I'm concerned. Six Apart doesn't seem like an evil heartless corporation or anything, and I think they generally mean well, but that mess showed that they're capable of making sweeping changes without having much of a clue as to how much said changes will piss off their userbase. Thus, I'm thinking that a similar bomb is going to drop sometime in the future. They did make some changes to that licensing scheme based on the massive resultant outcry, but it's still more restrictive than it was, and the entire incident was still unpleasant. I also worry that they might try to squeeze more profit out of LJ by tossing ads in (which, under the new TOS, is possible), which would really chafe my ass if those ads showed up on my paid account.

I found the link to the new TOS, and it honestly seemed like pretty standard stuff, but from what I gathered by reading the comment thread, there are issues I didn't know about or consider. For example, celebrity roleplaying communities can be considered impersonation, but LJ staff looks the other way because they have disclaimers that make it obvious that they're just joking around. I also wonder if buying and selling over LJ is going to fall under forbidden commercial activities, which would really fuck over one of my friends who is trying to get a jewelry and knitting business off the ground.

I don't have resolutions per se, but this is the time of year when I go on a cutting (bodyfat loss) cycle. I'm way past the point where it's possible to gain muscle and lose fat at the same time, so I have to focus on one or the other, and over time, I become more muscular and lean. I'll diet and increase cardio for 2-3 months, which should be enough to make some nice progress.

I voted no. I lack belief in them because I haven't seen any compelling evidence in favor of their existence.

They've pretty much said that nothing much will change, only that they'll be given more resources. I wouldn't be surprised if TrackBack and TypeKey started popping up (TB's confirmed, even), but I don't see this turning into TypePad any day now. LJ has been a stable operation for about twice as long as TypePad's been around, they already make money, and they have vowed to stay open source. I don't see a problem here.

Six Apart did make it clear that they like LJ because it's oriented towards communities and writing for groups of friends, which is drastically different from the model of TypePad (and "normal" blog sites in general). Sure, you can have blogrolls and subscribe to your friends' RSS feeds and whatnot, but it's not the same because certain features get extremely unwieldy when you're not dealing with a single system. One example: filtered posts that only specific groups of people get access to. Because TypePad is just a bunch of MT blogs that Six Apart hosts for people, doing something similar on that service would be a real pain because you'd have to have a separate login for each friend's journal so you could see their posts. Of course, you have a single account for the entirety of LJ, so that feature works nicely there. Anyway, the point of all of that is I believe them when they say that they're not trying to bump us all over to TypePad.

I also agree that the technical improvements and development sound good. I am just concerned that subtle differences in company culture and vision might eventually lead to negative changes in LJ policy. For instance, though LJ is making money (as you said), what if somebody decides that it isn't enough? LJ's original management seemed content with making enough to pay for servers, bandwidth, and the team's salary. They didn't have to worry about keeping stock profitable. In the future, management at Six Apart could very well decide that LJ needs to be making more money and take measures like increasing prices and putting ads on the service. We also don't know how lenient they'll be with regard to content. I can certainly understand BALEETing blatantly illegal stuff like, say, child porn, but if management takes a strict approach towards enforcing rules against vulgar content, will adults get in trouble for swearing and talking about sex? Does anyone here happen to have some idea of Six Apart's TypePad content standards? (At a glance, the new LJ TOS' section on content that you agree not to post looks pretty similar to TypePad's.) If they're lenient, then it won't likely be problematic, but that still leaves the larger issue of policies diverging over time. (And nobody has given a definitive word about whether people will be allowed to buy/sell/trade their stuff in the new service or whether that will fall under forbidden commercial activities.)

It appears that everyone wants to keep LJ running as is, but corporate mergers don't always go as planned, and like I said, the future is unknown. I don't think anyone seriously believes that LJ is going to implode overnight, though.

I am against the death penalty mainly because there's always the chance of wrongfully executing an innocent person. If that person has been imprisoned for the crime, that was certainly quite unfortunate, but at least they can be released. If they're exonerated after an execution, it's not as if you can resurrect them. It's tempting to think that the death penalty is the ultimate justice for unremorseful mass murderers like, say, Timothy McVeigh, but consider the plight of people who are arrested for something they didn't do and lack the resources to adequately defend themselves in court or simply get screwed over by fraud on the part of the government (see Ernest Williams' case for an example of this). Is it really worthwhile to allow for the possibility of killing innocent people just so the state can exact "eye for an eye" justice against the obviously guilty? Amnesty International provides some more reasons for opposing the death penalty as well.
