It's "Carol of the Bells", which is probably my all-time favorite Christmas song. It's gorgeous when sung by a choir.

As far as the Flash goes, that never fails to crack me up.

That was cute, but the keyboard controls didn't seem to work for me (running Flash under Linux - I don't know what version, but maybe it's too old), so all I could do was sit, shoot, and get hit. Oh well. At least I like the song...

I've never heard that one, but I'm pretty sure I've heard some of the orchestra's other work at some point. I remember being all excited going into eighth grade because the eighth grade chorus got to sing Carol of the Bells, and because I had gotten into the chorus in 7th grade (by auditioning the year before) and done a good job, I thought I'd be in it that year as well. That was how it seemed to work in years prior. But no...they fucked it up that year so that everybody in certain homerooms (not mine) got to be in the chorus. It wasn't a merit-based thing. On the other hand, after I heard that year's chorus sing the song, I was glad to not be involved because, due to the stupid aforementioned system of determining who got to sing in the chorus, there were quite a few people in there who couldn't sing, and the overall effect was meh. Ah, random memories.

The Mr. Mackey version from South Park is, of course, classic.

We have it, but I haven't tried it yet. I tried the first Metal Gear Solid ages ago, and I couldn't get past that stage in the beginning with the helicopter pad, so I figured that stealth action wasn't my forte. I'd been tempted to try MGS2 because at least you get a tranq gun in the beginning so you can immobilize the enemies instead of having to avoid or kill them. Difficulty-wise, how would you say MGS3 compares to the first two? (For the record, I would definitely be playing on easy mode... )

That doesn't sound too bad. My big problem was getting caught and killed while sneaking around no matter how much I tried to get past that stupid guard on the right side of the map. I was worried that MGS3 would be worse because there's no radar, but I also heard that the design of the levels is more open to make up for that (so it's easier for you to carefully look around and spot bad guys).

Rummy just doesn't get it, does he? According to this BBC article. he did not personally sign over 1000 letters of condolence sent to the families of soldiers killed in Iraq. The letters were signed by machine. Talk about disrespectful...

Bleh. When are people going to understand that cloning their beloved pet is not going to recreate said pet? As others have already mentioned, the new cat will not have the same personality as the old one. If this woman expects that to be the case, it will be awfully unfair to the new cat as well. Will she love the cat less if it fails to follow in its predecessor's footsteps?

I'm with X-mas and Cheveyo Chowilawu. As long as you're not ruining a multiplayer game for other people or lying about your accomplishments, I don't see what the damn big deal is. Currently, gaming is not a major part of my life. I like to play games, but I don't give a shit about being the best or finding every last thing by myself. I enjoy figuring things out, but if I'm stuck or about to die or just plain annoyed beyond my frustration threshold, I'll go look up a FAQ for some help. I play games to have fun. If you don't feel right getting outside help with a game, that's fine, but some of us have different priorities. As an analogy, I also cosplay for fun. Making my own outfits and props is, to me, an essential aspect of the experience. Significant quantities of my time and disposable income are allocated toward crafting and sewing. Some people just want to dress up at a con, and they don't have the time, ability, or knowhow to make something and don't particularly care. Thus, they commission it. Are they cheating? (Not unless they claim that they made the item in question, but that's fraud in and of itself.)

That games can be played in ways other than the developers intended? Furthermore, as was already mentioned, Gamesharks et al. have purposes other than making a game easier (glitching, increasing difficulty), so it doesn't make sense to see them as completely Bad, Umkay.

If she had one of those boring cats who doesn't do much of anything and the new one is boring as well, then that would explain it. Also, did the news story say how old the new cat was? If the new cat is young, it's probably too early to say whether or not it has the same personality. In my experience of raising a pair of littermates from the age of 8 weeks, it takes a while for a cat's personality to fully develop. Chester and Cookie were both quite similar when they were very small, but as they grew, they started to exhibit individual preferences and patterns of behavior. Cookie loves corrugated cardboard scratchers, but Chester prefers the carpet. (He hasn't managed to damage it any, but we were still happy when he started digging into the scratch mat we got recently. I think he likes it because it's so flat that it isn't really different from the rest of the floor.) Cookie just bats toy mice around, but Chester fetches them (nobody taught him - he just started one day). He loves to "play mousie" so much that he'll try to wake us up in the wee hours of the morn if he finds one lying around, or he'll sit downstairs and howl piteously for attention. Chester tends to be skittish around new people, hiding under the bed until he feels safe. (Oddly enough, he was more outgoing as a young kitten. Nothing traumatic happened to him - he just became shy.) Cookie is very friendly and outgoing. Even if she's just met you, she'll orbit your ankles and purr up a storm.

I don't say a lot in the regular forums, but since when does that constitute "never being around"? Unless I'm on vacation, I visit the board at least once a day, and I do post in staff discussions. You could have just abstained from that category instead of sneaking in a rude little crack about how I don't deserve the vote. Hell, I'm on vacation now, and I've still been reading the board. I just didn't log in until now because, until a few minutes ago, I had nothing to say.

I agree with those who suggested merging some of the gender-based categories, though. It really doesn't make sense to have people win them by default just because they're the only choice.

*waves*

I'm posting from Rando's laptop in the Pittsburgh International Airport. We're heading out to central Illinois by way of Chicago to spend a few days with a bunch of our friends for New Year's, and I so did not feel like driving 12 hours each way again (especially because it was hella snowy last year and the return trip took more like 15), so hooray for 1 1/2 hours in the air + a 2 hour drive to Bloomington (where our friends live). Our flight doesn't leave for over an hour and we found a random unsecured wireless network (11 Mbit/sec nonetheless), so here I am futzing around on teh intarweb.

Christmas presents aren't quite as interesting when you have disposable income and just buy stuff when you want it. I ordered us a pair of ankle-length Australian riding dusters (read: coats that look badass and are incredibly practical as well, especially because they're waterproof and they strap to your legs because you can ride a bike while wearing them), so I guess that's our present. We got some small gifts from our parents, but that's really about it.

Aaaaand we're here. The flight was uneventful (which is, of course, A Good Thing) and we got awesome noodles along the way. Hilarity is already ensuing. Even more hilarity will ensue once more people start to arrive. There may be up to 40 people in this place. It is a rather large farmhouse type of place, but still. We're going to stay in a hotel when it starts to get crazy. Last year, 20something people had to share one bathroom, which isn't exactly fun.

Dark Vampriel - You're about 3 hours north of us. Bloomington is about 2 hours south of Chicago (or 1 1/2 if you're riding with Ernie, who did 80 mph most of the way ). It's basically in the middle of tons of flat farmland. That's OK, though, because we'll have plenty of people (and games) to keep us entertained.

NSNick - Yeppers...and we're very happy to have flown across. The first time my friends had their New Year's gathering, they put up directions that included something like "Drive across Ohio. Be bored out of your mind." Seriously, no matter which major highway (70 or 80) you choose, you don't have to do anything along the way. We drove last year and I was practically falling asleep. It didn't help that it was nighttime and, as a result, there was absolutely nothing of interest to look at. Hooray for teh airplane.

Trapster - That was a reference to Kindergarten Cop, a movie where Arnold Schwarzenegger is a cop who pretends to be a kindergarten teacher to solve some case. I haven't seen it in a while, so I can't remember exactly how he was doing this, but evidently one of the kids' fathers was important to the case, so he was trying to gather some information without making it obvious what he was up to. So he started an activity, asking the kids "Who is your daddy, and what does he do?"
