It is a cool game. One thing I forgot to mention is that its story is revealed in ambiguous little bits and pieces, which really appeals to me, and I like what I've seen of said story so far. The difficulty of the second half is the only aspect of the game that might get really aggravating. If that's the case, the following (for Gameshark 2 v3) might be of use.

Master code

Infinite Health

infinite ammo & items

24522668 0474C518

24C03678 1966CCAA
24913628 30FE5C48

Disclaimer - they may change for the US version of the game, but I figured I might as well put them here in case anybody else is playing the Japanese version (and for my personal reference in case the topic I found them in gets too old and falls off the board).

I don't see the problem with bumping old threads as long as you have content to add. Hell, I bumped my own Silent Hill 4 thread in General Gaming when the initial GameFAQs reviews came out. I wanted to post on-topic content, and I didn't want to lose the speculation and discussion earlier in the thread. That's not nearly the same thing as gratuitously adding "I agree" to some random old thread. I think that bumping should only be punished if it's obvious spam. It's true that you can make a new thread on a subject and link to the old one, but it's not quite the same as having all of the discussion in one place.

Firefox pwns. It's fast, stable, and secure, and its standards and PNG support are excellent. I love its tabbed interface and the slew of extensions available for it. My personal favorites are RadialContext (pie context menus, which can be used like normal menus or as mouse gestures), Super Drag and Go, and Web Developer (which is quite useful to me at work). (By the way, regular mouse gestures are available for those who prefer them.)

Dracoon - IE does need quite a lot of progress. Its rendering engine, which hasn't been updated since 2001, doesn't support CSS nearly as well as Gecko (the rendering engine of the Mozilla browser family). Look here for an example of a page with valid HTML and CSS1/2 that displays correctly in a Gecko-based browser (and has for quite a while) but not in IE 6. I haven't played with Opera in a while, but last I heard, its CSS support beat IE's, too. IE can't handle basic PNG transparency without a standards-breaking hack. It has some nasty bugs as well:

- If you call a JavaScript function in a parent window that is supposed to populate a select box in a child window of that parent, the browser will die with a bizarre error message. (Firefox handles this task just fine and dandy.) I develop complex web applications for a living, and this bug made my life hell when I was trying to streamline the JS in a particularly involved website with a multiple-window interface.
- Several major IE exploits have recently been brought to light. Guarding against these is not nearly as simple as being careful with your security settings and not installing random junk. The browser can be tricked into downloading and running arbitrary software without any input from you at all. Read this article for a synopsis and links to other articles about the specific exploits.

The Mozilla browsers and Opera aren't perfect (nobody would claim that they are ), but at least they aren't so vulnerable to exploitation, and I've never known either to die like that on simple DHTML.

Oops...I forgot to mention some of my other favorite Mozilla and Firefox features.

- Site-specific image and cookie blocking. This makes it easy to hide annoying spastic banner ads and allow useful cookies (shopping cart contents, forum sessions, username/passwords, etc.) while blocking cookies that track you in ways that you don't appreciate. Firefox 0.9 gives you the option of allowing a cookie only for your browser session.
- Fine-grained control over JavaScript. You can disable popups, status bar message changing, window moving and resizing, and scripts that hide your right-click context menu without turning off JS altogether.

If you like to scroll the page by middle-clicking and then dragging your mouse (as you can in IE), Firefox has an option for that, too.

Cymoro - What do you mean when you say Mozilla has no way to save images? Going to Tools - Page Info gets you a dialogue that will list every single image referenced on a page (even images set as backgrounds and whatnot) and allow you to select and save said images. You can also right-click on an image that was displayed using an img src tag and pick Save Image As from the context menu.

The Ultra w00t 9000 (Legion's name for my dual Athlon box ) runs Debian Linux, unstable version (which is actually pretty stable). I originally tried out Mandrake in late summer 2001, and I liked the Linux experience, but I didn't like how RPMDrake (the package managing application) decided to magically snarf itself one day, and I could never figure out how to fix it. We'd run into RPM dependency hell on a fairly regular basis, too (i.e. you need to install package A to install package B, but package B depends on package A).

We decided to switch me over to Debian, which has a package management system that I liked much more than Mandrake's. Debian's packages are much more actively monitored and tested, so things generally work better. You do run into the circular dependency problem sometimes, but it doesn't happen quite as often, and there are non-icky ways around it. I run the unstable variant because it gets new software before the others, and I'm not running a server or anything that needs anal-retentively excellent stability, so I really don't give a crap if something goes a little wonky every now and then. The worst that happens is you get a package that's borked and you have to wait for the maintainers to fix it (which generally happens within a few days to a couple of weeks or even less if it's a really bad bug in a package that's important to most people's systems), and there's a package that will warn you of existing grave (severe) bugs before you go to upgrade your system, so it's easy to keep from getting yourself hosed. (For example, there's something fooey about the latest Firefox package, so I'm not going to upgrade it until said bug is fixed.) I only ever have to reset my box when we upgrade the kernel (which doesn't happen that often) or in the event of a power outage or hardware fKitten Yiffer (both of said occurrences are also quite rare). My uptime record is something like 120 days.

Wow. I agree with everyone who admires the way you're handling this. If I had cancer, I'd probably be completely freaking out. My mom was diagnosed with breast cancer 2 1/2 years ago. She had surgery to remove the lump and took some hormone suppressant drugs (it was the sort of cancer that feeds off estrogen), and she's been fine ever since. I hope that this year of treatment will kill off your tumor for good.

*bumpity bumpity bump*

I haven't gotten any further in the game yet, but I did come across some stuff that might be of interest, so I'm reviving the thread yet again.

Somebody on GameFAQs posted this - some Japanese guy's speed run through SH4 on hard mode. I downloaded all of the videos and watched some of them for a preview of what's coming in the second half of the game. I learned from the boards that you're invincible while executing a fully charged attack. This guy puts that feature to good use, and I think I shall, too.

Bad news: I came across some other page with the full SH4 soundtrack up for download (I can't exactly link to it because I lost the URL), and a bunch of the in-game music wasn't included. Good news: I found the Water Prison song available for download elsewhere (somebody ripped a bunch of said in-game music and was nice enough to share with the rest of the class). I have a few other background tracks from that same site (of course, I lost the URL to this one, too...bleh), so if anyone wants them, bug me and I'll find a way to pass them along. I still haven't seen any confirmed track listing for the soundtrack that you'll get with a preordered US version of the game, so maybe the ambient tracks will wind up on that one anyway.

Yeah, you do. I'm not sure exactly what happens, but it has to do with the 1-Up counter rolling over and making the game think that you're out of lives. It doesn't check to see if it's at a max value (like a high score counter probably would) - it just keeps going, probably because the game developers never anticipated anyone racking up such a metric assload of extra lives. Based on what I read in Nintendo Power years ago about your having to be careful with this trick when you get up to about 100 lives, said counter is probably 7 bits, allowing it to count from 0 to 127. If anyone has detailed information on how the game is behaving in this case, I'd appreciate knowing.

I was actually raised pescetarian (mainly ovo-lacto vegetarian plus some fish every now and then). My parents kept a variety of good, nutritious food around, so I was always healthy and never felt deprived, and I never got curious about meat, either. I gave up fish for about a 5-year period because I felt guilty about not being a "real" vegetarian, but then I figured that because fish have such primitive brains, it's extremely unlikely that they give a rat's ass when somebody pulls them out of the water, so why deprive myself of an excellent (and yummy) source of protein on moral grounds? I'm still a pescetarian because my diet works fine and dandy for my purposes (staying healthy and lean, getting enough protein (>100g a day) to rebuild my muscles).

Though I abstain from red meat and poultry because I'm personally bothered by the idea of eating it, I don't think there's anything inherently bad or evil about eating meat. As was already mentioned, humans are omnivores, so we need a certain amount of protein in order to be healthy, and meat works well for that purpose because its protein is easily used by our bodies. (Large herbivores, like horses, can get enough protein from plants. That doesn't work so well for us.) My beloved cats are obligate carnivores, so they require meat-based food. My main beef (pun intended) is with the cruelty inherent in factory farming, which is where most meat (and eggs and dairy) come from. (For the record, I buy the vast majority of our eggs and dairy from small farms. This is expensive, but it's worth it to me.) I'd be very happy to see the animal-based agricultural industry shift to more humane practices, which would be good for the consumers as well. Well-cared-for animals really do make better eggs and milk (organic or small local farm skim tastes more like 2% - it's light-years better than the standard watery crap), and according to meat connoisseur friends, they taste better, too. For example, Argentine beef, which comes from free-roaming cattle who feed on grass, is a delicacy.

My skin burns easily (in as little as 15 minutes in bright sunlight), but that came from my DNA (as far back as we can tell, all of my ancestors are from somewhere in northern Europe) and not from my diet. I'd much rather be pale than tan, and I've been wearing sunblock religiously for years (premature aging from cumulative UV exposure is teh sux), so it generally doesn't cause me any trouble.

I've never been officially diagnosed with ligyrophobia (a fear of loud noises), but I'm sure I have it. I'm actually not afraid of the noise itself, just of what it does to my body. As far back as I can remember, popping balloons, fireworks, and other sharp loud noises have given me bad physical reactions that go beyond just being startled. The louder and sharper the noise, the worse the "twitch". For instance, around this July 4, some asshat set off an explosive a bit too close to my house. It wasn't too sharp, but it was loud enough to make me jump a little bit and spread prickles across the back of my hands. Other noises would make me feel as if someone had tied a string around my stomach and jerked it sharply upward. The worst reaction I ever had was to a fake cannon blast at Colonial Williamsburg. When that sucker went off, my knees turned to water and I convulsed and almost fell down.

I'm lucky that this phobia doesn't terribly disrupt my life. I can even enjoy events like fireworks displays and historical battle reenactments by sealing my ears shut with my fingers, which muffles the bangs so they fall far below my reaction threshold. Of course, it irritates me on occasion (like when I happen to be at the grocery store when they're blowing up balloons and the employee assigned to that task pops one ), but things could be a lot worse. Still, I wish there were some way to get rid of it...or at least understand why I seem to be allergic to sharp, loud noise. I really don't get that.

I don't think there was anything wrong with that bump. This thread was on the front page of the forum (and not even very far down), and he did make an on-topic post.

Yeah...same here. I don't think the 5/10 reviewers were bothered by the difficulty of the second half, though - it just seems that they weren't enthused by SH4's style of gameplay. It's interesting how certain aspects of a game can be extremely annoying to some people but not bother others at all. I loved Shadow of Destiny, which was more like a movie than a game, but it bored the snot out of a lot of people because you admittedly don't do much and they didn't care for the story, which is the game's main appeal.

I haven't picked SH4 back up yet (mainly because I haven't recently had time to park my butt in front of the tube for a few hours at a time), but I'll let you know how the second half is once I get there. On principle, I strongly dislike sharp spikes in difficulty, but since this is a nifty game, I'm going to make myself deal with it.

OMG DYNASTY WARRIORS YAAAAAY!!!!111!! I'm actually making DW4 Zhang He and Xiahou Dun costumes. They need to be done by mid-May. I've already started them. It's going to be a busy year...

On the topic of this thread: the duel system is an interesting idea, but they should provide some warning that a nearby enemy officer will challenge you to a duel when you approach them. (For instance, their dot could be a different color on the map.) As it stands, if you're unfamiliar with a battle, you won't know where upcoming duels are, so you won't get a fair chance to save. Because avoiding a duel hurts your morale, you'll probably do what you're "supposed" to - accept it and try your best to win. But if you lose, you die and therefore have to restart. If you happened to have saved not long before the duel, this isn't a problem, but having to redo a whole assload of battle (especially if it's a difficult one) is really damned annoying.

While I'm on the subject, why the flipping hell does DW4 offer a nearly impossible Lu Bu duel in an early stage in musou mode?! Chewbacca does not make sense! At least declining it doesn't wreck your chances of beating the battle, but I still thought it wasn't a very nice trick to pull on people who don't know that Lu Bu is basically a god of war, especially when most of the other duels I remember doing at that point in the game weren't nearly that tough.
