Heh, my first post.

I know I need to learn ASM first, but what format does custom music need do be in? Is it a standard midi file, or something else?

adding some custom title screen graphics couldn't hurt, either, though you'll need a tile editing program to do that.

Which *.bin file should the custom graphics be saved in? I tried looking for it in yy-chr, but couldn't find any of the title screen gfx.

Ah, it must be 27 then. I was wondering why that one didn't look right.

Or maybe not, I just noticed another thread where someone said it's 28 and 29. Either way, it should be easy to find now I know they're in Gameboy format.

Here's a few screens of my first project, AltMario. I should have it finished in a few weeks.

These are the cheese themed levels, so it's supposed to be very yellow.

Hi Torn. Yeah, I read XDelusion's thread about it and downloaded Lunar Magic staight away.
I'm surprised more people didn't end up here, editing SMW.

Lunar Magic is in many aspects a curse to the SMW hacking community. Now, any idiot (sorry for the flame ) can make a hack. Think about it: can this still be called a hack? Earlier, people had to know asm or at least how to work with a hex editor in order to make a hack. That was quite positive, 'cause people working about 5 minutes for a single ledge think twice before they place it amidst the air. And if they work ~10hrs per level they also try to make it really good, otherwise noone would play it and the work was for waste.

Coming from the DooM editing community, I know all too well how much the progression of easy-to-use editing utilities has led to lots of newcomers releasing bad projects. I made sure my DooM maps were of a decent standard before I started sharing them with the community and I'll do the same here.

I guess it depends on your perspective. If like me, you wouldn't be here without LM, you'll consider it a good thing.
If you think that LM brings too many newcomers here with too many poorly conceived hacks, you'll consider it a bad thing.

Seriously though, putting up with that sort of thing is a small price to pay to ensure a long lasting community for the game. I can think of dozens of excellent games, which people don't play anymore because the editing scene died. Because of Lunar Magic, that won't happen to SMW.

It's been quite a while since my last post here, over a year in fact, but I have slowly been making progress on my hack, AltMario:

This level is also used on the title screen intro.

Ghost House, palette subject to change.

Frozen Ghost House, my personal favourite.

The Bridge levels.

I always thought ghost house Eeries looked a bit dumb, so I replaced the graphics with Boo. One small question though... With the dark BG setting used in the ghost house levels, is it possible to define which sprites are affected by it? Ideally I'd like all the ghosts to look transparent like the Eerie ghost and reflecting Boo Buddies.

There are no ExGFX in this hack, just a few select graphic replacements and loads of palette shifting. I've finished too much now to start changing level themes with ExGFX. I'm still not sure whether to include a full overworld replacement or not. So far it's just a few minor tweaks, as I haven't had much practice with it yet. A good example is the Special overworld, which now looks like this:

(note the paths haven't been changed)

I'll make an attempt at some new music when Solar Soundtrack is released, but it will probably suck, much like my attempts at midi music.

Yeh, this looks good. Especially the special zone, even though I haven't seen any other maps.

Yeah, most of the other overworld areas probably won't be as good as that one. It's just that the Special World map has a big chunk of space at the top to play with. Most of the regular overworld areas will be minor changes to better reflect the level themes.

On an unrelated matter, w00t! Shiny new post layout!

Despite only having 10 posts, I'm already on my second layout. This one took me over three hours to finish due to IE and Firefox having differing opinions on how to align DIV frames. This will probably be the last major change I make for a while, mostly as it's such a big improvement over the last one, but there may be a few minor tweaks like the link colours as they're still that yellow forum default.

I haven't tested it in Opera or Netscape, or at any resolutions below 1024x768, so if anyone has problems with it please let me know. I don't think it stretches in width very well, but I don't make a habit of posting large images so that shouldn't matter.
