It can be easy without being "very easy." Heck, I'm not sure I'd even call all the levels of World 1 in SMB3 "very easy." There's nothing wrong with a little difficulty in World 1, so long as it's not overdone.

[/hypocrite]

I also don't believe each level has to be harder than the last, necessarily. A general increase in difficulty is all right, but not every level needs to be harder than the last... certainly OK to have levels more difficult than most others for the point in the game, and all right having a few "break" levels, too.

Anyone else surprised by all the people saying that hacks should be as easy as the original game, particularly considering the original was a little too easy? Seems like such a waste of hacking talent....

One problem I've had with the original game was with the frog suit. While great in water, it just controlled so badly on land, that it hardly made the suit worth it, except for those extremely rare "all water" levels.

So I guess, is there a way to make frog Mario act "normal" on land? Perhaps with improved jumping ability, being a frog and all, making the suit not quite so overall useless. It's not really that important, I guess.

I don't particularly appreciate this. This is a good idea for people who don't have the energy, or will, or time, to make an entire hack for a game, even if they still have some good ideas. I tried this for The Bugs Bunny Crazy Castle, hoping people would feel free to make a couple levels without having to commit to an entire hack. Not a single person submitted anything, mind you, but it was certainly worth a try.

As for this hack... are we allowed to use more than one area for a level, or do we have to just stick with a single room per level?

Possible thought: have people who want to participate send in 16 levels, sub levels, hidden areas, or whatever, in any way, shape, or form. SM Gamer can then try the levels, and put them in the game where they fit best, either in difficulty, theme, or otherwise.

I have a small gripe, though: in some of the screens, the "stats" at the top of the screen are rather difficult to see, like you can hardly see the time limit in the third screenshot.

The "Clock" looks bad. I'm not really sure why you changed it from "Time" anyway, but I'd recommend changing it back.

I'm deathly curious what the purple "eyeball" blocks are supposed to do when you get all of them. I didn't notice anything special....

The brown "used" blocks need a little more "shading" or something. They look too plain currently.

Is there a reason for the No-Yoshi signs in Weird Cloud Land? As far as I can tell, there are no Yoshis, and the change in music in somewhat distracting.

The secret exit in the first level is absolutely evil. I love it !

The non-scrolling background in 1-4 is distracting. I'm not sure what to tell you, since it's a vertical level, but I had a little trouble judging some jumps with the background not moving.

As for the cave graphics, I think they look fine, with or without a "wall" for them. In fact, and I may be the only person to think so, but I think they'd look better without a special "wall" graphic for them. Something about it just looks right!

Some of you may remember a second Super Mario Bros. 3 hack I was working on a while back, then quit working on for a very long time. Well, I've been re-working on it, except most of it's gotten a pretty big overhaul, making it easier, and making the levels just more plain fun.

I've been working pretty hard on it, and I hope when it's all finished, it winds up being the third best Super Mario Bros. 3 hack around . It might not be a complete overhaul, but it's gonna' still be a damn fun game to play .

You don't like the sixth screenshot... I thought the colors worked well together, kinda' swampy-looking, but if others agree with you, I can easily change them.

There will be a few new graphics, like the background water in the second screenshot. And a few others not shown here/not done yet. And if it counts, no more annoying diagonal white lines in the ice levels, as can be seen in the ninth shot. By no means will it be a graphical overhaul, though.

There may or may not be any asm hacking, depending how I can get certain things to work... either way, it wouldn't be much.

The level editing, though, is quite extensive, save for a few level endings (in which there's not a whole lot you really can do), or the World 4 Hammer Brother level (in which I have absolutely no clue what I can do with it).

I'll see about the water surface issue. It looks bad when I use the "animated" water, which is why I didn't. But I'll see about improving it's appearance a bit.

I haven't tried it yet, but I felt I should tell you that you should release it as an .ips patch, and not in ROM format. There are several good reasons to do so, first and foremost, though, because linking to ROMs, or a site with a ROM, is simply not allowed here.

The graphics are changed to look like Smb2j. While there's nothing wrong with that (as the graphics are notably better than the original game's, after all), you really should not advertise them as "graphics to make it look cooler." And "font with shadow effect" is just a fancy way of his saying "the Smb2j font."

Did you take the Toad sprite from another hack? I could swear I've seen it used elsewhere....

Is there a reason you've only changed the first four worlds? Certainly there are plenty of unused levels you could use to make more....

Why is 4-4 unchanged, save for Bowser throwing hammers now?

As for the levels themselves, they seem a little... well, bland, design-wise. Then again, you're trying... I just recommend experimenting a bit more with the level design. Some ideas might work nicely; some might not.

You seem on a good path, anyway, and can possibly do some great things with practice. Don't feel too bad: I made some hacks that weren't too great in the beginning. The earliest, and worst, were never released, but some of my others (the first three Super Mario Bros. hacks, the Super Mario Bros. 3 hack, and others) could've used more fine tuning on my part, and for whatever reason, I still have them available for download, if for some reason someone actually wanted to play them.

You'll get better over time, though, so don't give up; I can see some potential with this hack. I've improved over time myself. I'm pretty proud of my two Bugs Bunny hacks, my last two SMB hacks, and the SMB3 hack I'm currently working hard on. Heck, my Bugs Bunny Crazy Castle hacks are the best Bugs Bunny Crazy Castle hacks in existance, not that I have much competition . Just keep working at it.

The easiest, and best, thing you could have done was just to get rid of the looping data altogether. I never cared for the looping castles, personally, but if you couldn't change them to how you liked, you could always just change it into a "normal" castle.

If you think the levels are bland, then that is your opinion. I think they are fine and they are staying the way I have made them.
You are absolutely right; it is just my opinion, and I certainly would not expect you to change them. It was mostly advice for any future projects you may do. Certainly, this was your first try at a hack, and it's not bad for a first hack .

Who is Ken Jennings?

Being the main gameshow fanatic around here, it only makes sense that I would be the one to bring it up. Seriously, he becoming the new star of Jeopardy! . In 28 episodes, only 4 times has the second place contestant even had enough to possibly beat him going into Final Jeopardy! I mean, the guy is just hot stuff here!

I don't suppose anyone else has been watching, engrossed, wondering how much he can win, or how long he can stay before someone else bests him. Only time will tell

You're not the first to notice. When I made that other thread, it never occured to me to look in Craziness, of all places, for a thread about Ken .

Anyway, there is a difference between Ken's current reign of Jeopardy!, and Michael Larson's of Press Your Luck. The way Ken's winning everything in sight is one of the intended effects of the current Jeopardy! system. Intended to possibly have a contestant like Ken, going on, winning game after game after game. No one working on the show had ever intended for anyone to pull a Larson on Press Your Luck, though, and as such, why they changed a bit after his show.

Actually, that is the ceiling tile . Notice the "ceiling tiles" look slightly different from the rest. I'll need to see if I can change those without changing any other unintended tiles....

You're thinking of Super Mario World, though, where you can "jump through" without an actual ceiling tile: in Super Mario Bros. 3, ceiling tiles or not, you can't jump through .

Guess it's a good sign that Dahrk thinks it looks nice .

That, and the Tootsie Roll Pop commercial, have to be the oldest commercials that are still on the air, albiet only occasionally nowadays.

As for the question, vanilla. By far, vanilla. I wish they sold bags of vanilla-only Tootsie Rolls. Once, at a nearby convenience store, they had a jar of miscellaneous candies for 10 cents each. I went through and bought all the vanilla Tootsie Rolls in the jar. The lady behind the counter thought I was weird .
