We could all download Game Maker/Platformer Game Dev... and start coding our own SMW...

You COULD change the background colour in the pallette. And if he was fire mario, isn't it just the pallette for normal mario that changes?

When I hacked SMW, I did it for fun, not for the gfx editing at all. In fact, I tried to stay away from major GFX and custom block changes, I wanted to see the magic I could create using what was there.... I must admit, I came up with some awesome levels... Anyway, it is pretty fun, but at the same time it feels more satisfying to code an entire game yourself then say: "Hey, look at me, I used an engine completely coded by Nintendo to make an awesome game!" But I guess most people don't do that, they do it for the fun... at least, I hope so! (edited by BGenesis on 05-16-04 05:51 PM) |

I've grown to love the ACMLM system, the little quirks [syndromes, colours, etc] and especially the post template system. I wanted to code my own forum for a game development site I am setting up, as I don't think the other forum software can cater for my needs. I'm fairly learned in the workings of PHP and can always get help. So, should I go for it? Anything I should watch out for/implement? One thing troubled me was the mysql db layouts, you know, for posts... I never understood quite how that worked. I wish I could get hold of a copy of ACMLMBoard to see how this worked, but ass fairly impossible, I'll use something else. |

I'll probably be setting up some sort of PHP hosting service... although if you have a very small site I might just host you right now. You get FTP/PHP/MySQL DB and phpmyadmin access. But it's a shit connection at the moment.

My shift key was stuck Yeah, well, I'm not too bad at PHP so this shouldn't be too hard. I just wanted to see how posts/threads worked in a database environment. Well, thanks anyway... I'll see if that site returns online. |

Either way, backup and reinstall your OS... but if it isn't affecting your PC in any other way, I doubt it would be a virus. Unless it was coded by some Adobe-hater.

Hey, Win98 still kicks ass, no matter how many times I've reinstalled it! Switch off PC, insert W98 setup disk, reboot reinstall... OR.... I get this error every time I open Outlook. But if you simply reopen the program once it has closed it should cause no problem. I find it rather annoying myself, but I couldn't bear to reinstall this winxp. |

TLP is useless and I could never get it to work. YY-CHR on the other hand rocked to say the least... I even hacked my entire Earthbound titlescreen using nothing but YY-CHR, whereas TLP wouldn't display anything but gibberish. But don't listen to me. I even got down to editing Mario's sprite... but there's too much animation!

True hacking allows you to enjoy the readily coded beauty of a game without having to do it yourself... hence my Earthbound hack. In fact EB has been so well decoded that the entire engine can be twisted to do whatever you like. If you haven't tried your hand at hacking Earthbound, I recommend you try. It's enjoyable once you get down to the nitty gritty, ie decompressing graphics editing them in yy-chr and then recompressing them into the ROM, finding there's not enough room and you've ruined it. Load up a backup, and now recompress into the extra MBYTE of the rom. Now change the HEX pointer of the original titlescreen to the area you have inserted it to in the new MBYTE. I bet I've put you all off. But that isn't half of it. You have to develop characters, worlds even. But then it comes into it's own and you feel so satisfied that you have edited an entire titlescreen and two characters sprites. Trust me... you want to try it. |

Bleah, I got nowhere trying to learn ASM... anyway, I feel there's no point. Sorry if I haven't contributed. Just trying to give you an idea of how hard it is. For something as unimportant as hacking a rom, I wouldn't really bother.

*cough*fileshare*cough* But, I'm sure VBA will come out with it soon, after all ZSNES did it with the SNES [although I suppose that's completely different as it simply means redirecting controller commands.] But with the GBA you'll have to find a way of sending the ROM the commands another GBA would send etc. Once that was done, shouldn't be a problem. Online Four Swords... Drool. |

How would you recommend I start learning, because personally I hate tutorials. I'd rather have a live 'teacher' over IRC or something. I don't know, I just find tutorials.... annoying.

I had a dual-boot WinXP and Linux system running on my PC. I decided to free up the space Linux was using as I never used it much and removed it from my system. Of course the bootloader grub remained and refused to boot my WinXP partition and simply came up with Error 22. This means I cannot use the PC at all, which is a bit of a hindrance.... any help out there?

Graphics problems? Unsupported games? Never experienced that with zsnes, but I guess there's a first time for everything. Hmm, now I can't wait!

In the end I fixed it with my Win98 Bootdisk, by using fdisk /mbr... thanks anyway!
