Yeah... it's a little late. I've run completely out of room for TSA stuff on that level. I can't really add anything else... actually I'm pretty close to full on every level.

I know... same three screens as before, but there was a problem in level 2 where you couldn't beat the level, so I fixed that and some other minor bugs in the game. It should play a little beter now.

I was originally going to make a CV3 hack out of this... but then I realized that I like CV3 way too much to hack it, so it's going to be another CV1 hack, starring Grant DeNasty

Here's the first three screens showing the Grant sprite and the new sword weapon (replacement for the whip):


Here's the sword in action.


I get the sword upgrade, but it looks the same. It's just more powerful now.


The Magic sword (the second sword upgrade) flashes and strikes an extra block from the tip.

Two new weapons are also in the game. The Axelord's Axe replaces the Magic Boomerang, and simply is just and axe that acts like a boomerang. The Holy Water will still look the same, but the flame will travel along the ground untill it leaves the screen. The main goal I'm going to try to accomplish with this hack is to improve on my last CastleVania hack even more, the graphics will be even better, and there will be more interesting level design ('m going to be using CV3 as a model for the levels).

I still have to make new tree tops, branches, and smaller trees to give it a fuller look.

Here's the story of the game:
After Dracula's forces killed Grant DeNasty's family he went on a quest for revenge. He was given a map to the castle of Count Orlox, the Vempire general that lead the attack against the DeNasty family. Alone he fights his way to the castle to defeat Count Orlox.

Here's an updated look at the forest, and yes, you can walk on those branches. There are going to be parts that rely on it.

To the critics I say, thank for the comments, someone needs to step up and do the job. But don't expect me not to defend myself in return. The lack of climbing walls may lose some of the experience as playing as Grant, but that's where new Castlevania gameplay conventions are going to come into play. The ability to throw knives at will, no matter what weapon you have, and if I can track down the data (and hopefully get it to work in the PRG 1 rom) he will be more agile than ever. The problem with hacking CV3 is that I refuse to. It's too good of a game to alter, with the exception of a pallete switch for a couple of levels, that game is a work of art. I don't want to taint what has already been perfected.

I know someone posted this a long time ago, but I was wondering if anyone documented the jump data for castlevania. I looked all over this board and tried to Google search it, but so far my efforts turned up absolutely nothing. So I'm wondering if anyone happens to have it on them at all.

Why couldn't they have picked one of my good hacks to be in the list of "Best hacks ever?" You should definately go to a local library and scan that so I can check out my stuff in a published article, despite the fact that this article lives way in the past... I mean seriously NESticle hacking?

Haha, it's not that hard... but it is pretty cool I'm in a magazine. I went on thier board and posted my own article on Rom Hacking, so I'm waiting to see if anyone posts any replies about it.

Level 1 is finished. There's a bug that I can't figure out though that involves collecting items. Whenever I pick up money or invisibility potion and any other item while the sound from the first item is playing the sword's gfx gets all glitchy or disappears all together. It might have something to do with the game genie code I'm using though...

Actually thier biggest source was a guy that hacks arcade games, and Zophar's Domain. You can tell just based off the hacks on thier list. That's why when they picked one of mine they picked the oldest one, because it's the only hack on Zophar's.

Well the thing about the branches is that if I have solid tiles above the ground they have to be 4x4. Due to the fact that Grant jumps a body length higher than the original Castlevania he jumps right through solid blocks. If he goes through an 8x8 he gets stuck in the middle. The easiest way I found to solve that problem is to have 4x4 solid tiles above ground and 8x8 for the ground itself. I did take the advice of making shadowy trees in the background, which makes it look a lot better, but I'm keeping the giant leaves, because huge leaves are creepy?

Here's how I see it. This is one of the more advanced SMB hacks I've ever seen, but it's definately nowhere near one of the best. As far as I'm concerned, this kind of shows that a lot of ASM changes and stuff don't make a hack great. I just get the feeling that not an amazing amount of time was put into level design, but it's still a pretty good hack none the less.
