I have not once in my life been on a forum before. I joined to help some people with ROM editing, but also to be helped in return. I go by Schwa. I'm a "rookie" Super Mario Bros. 3 hacker, but I make all my levels from scratch via the DOS editor, Mario Improvement 3. Currently I'm having a problem getting the levels to work right, but I'll post my problem in the EMULATION section of the Message Board.

If anyone wants to test my levels, I'll be happy to patch 'em and send a copy.
Thanks. --Schwa

I'm new to the forum but I've been hacking Super Mario 3 for a while. I make all my levels from scratch via Mario Improvement 3 (an editor). I have 7 levels done (W1-1 to W1-6, plus the mini-fortress). However, every time I open the ROM in the emulator OR the editor, the Goal Card for W1-1 is moved to the beginning of the level, where it never shows up in the game anyway! The endings for W1-4, 1-5 and 1-6 do this, too, but move the Goal Card way, way to the right instead! W1-5 and 1-6 share the same level ending, but I haven't yet been able to test 1-6. I'm frusterated!

My guess is that whenever the ROM is loaded in some way or another, it reads the data for the Goal Card wrong. I want an experienced ROM hacker to help me; I would really appreciate it.

Thanks. --Schwa

I don't mean to brag, but I make all my levels from scratch. I have found out a few things about Mario Improvement 3. First of all, it's very buggy. I like to rewrite all the levels I remake, because of Daiz's description, but sometimes when you save over a level to the ROM it mixes your new level with the origonal level, creating a mess of 3 and 4 byte objects. My enemies have almost always been left right where I left them, although there was one incident where my objects were safe but the enemies were scrambled!

Currently I'm having a problem with my hack, but this isn't the place to post it. My advice is to only use Mario Improvement 3 if you have a lot of patience and at least know how programs work from the inside (so you know how to fix it).

I fixed the Phantom Goal Card problem (thanks a lot for replying, I never got one), and have 7 playable levels now. Well, almost 7. More like 6 and 3/4. See, I have this awesome level where you're sanwiched between 2 horizontal pipes that span the width of the level, and there's about 4 tiles of space in between them. The level is an autoscroller, too, and there are bullet bill shooters, Piraniah Plants, the works. Well, at the end of my level, there's a pipe that's supposed to bring you to an exit. Instead, it brings you to the top of a screen with starry background (like in underground level), playing underground music, and you immediately fall and lose a life!

I've done everything. The Pointer tile is set, the in-game pointer is set to the level# the exit's in, and I've even picked several exits and all of them give me the starry background-fall down-lose a life! In fact, even when my Pointer tile says "Come out pipe Upwards", it sends Mario to the star background coming DOWN from a pipe!

Any advice from someone who knows how to use Mario Improvement 3 is good. Please help me! I'm growing weak from stress at this point... need... to... fix level...

Thanks. --Schwa

I got it fixed by redoing Level 1. Glad I did, too, since Level 1 was kinda crappy anywho. I have a problem with the Airship now. First the game was adding vertical posts to the level that shouldn't be there (because it looks cruddy and squishes Mario 'cause the level scrolls), and now the emulator crashes whenever I load the Airship!

If you have any advice, I'd really appreciate it. --Schwa

P.S. Mario Improvement 3 bugs out the level every time it's first loaded into the ROM. (All the objects are moved to crazy spots and changed.) However, if you go back to freeform mode and load the level you saved, then save to the ROM again, the ROM level is fine.

I'm interested in this, all right, and it's pretty hard to impress me, too. If you used a Hex Editor to do the seasons and dungeon lighting and skills and underwater meter, then I'll remain a noob forever. I take pride in my ability to make levels from scratch, but realistically I know only a little bit of code and absolutely nothing about hex strings. Great job for surpassing me.

--Schwa

P.S. Maybe after you finish this hack, you could release a tutorial for how to make some of the changes in this hack (not seasons, since that's what the game revolves around). I'm sure many people out there would love to learn dungeon lighting or how to do boss meters, or make new power-ups. I'd absolutely LOVE to learn to make new powerups. I'd lay down a Boomerang Suit before you know it, then I'd put Koopa shells inside ? blocks.... ....

No, it never reset the game. The screen just turned black and froze (not the computer, just the emulator). But I went and remade the level and it works 95% perfect. (The other 5% is bad because whenever you pick up the wand at the end, a thick post appears out of nowhere until you land in the castle! Not harmful, though.) As for water in the ship, you forget that there's water in the World 8 Battleship (2nd level). Maybe the reason that works is because of the position the Autoscroll item is in. Most ship levels have an Autoscroll coordinate that's designed specifically for that level.

Second, did you say that YOU make levels from scratch? If so, I think it's pretty cool (since just about every Smb3 hacker just rearranges levels w/ Discombobulator, not makes new ones). I have all of World 1 done on my hack, and World 2 is pretty cool. I have one problem though that maybe you'll understand.

I finished W2-2, a hills level, and like the origonal W2-2 it has water. Only the water spans the width of the level. I put an Autoscroll item at x00, y50 to make the entire level sink and rise 3 tiles (like in W3-3). I gave the level a Desert palette, but the problem is that blank sky tiles remain cyan, and all sky tiles touching slopes are the right shade of blue they should be! So what you have is a fug-gg-gly level. When origonal green hill palettes are used, the colors are normal, but every other palette keeps the central sky cyan. The Underground tileset has the same problem. I would just go and change the color palettes through the Discombobulator, but the palette editor doesn't work on this computer!

If anyone could help, I'd appreciate it. --Schwa

So Great Guy does his levels from scratch, eh? I like your paper idea, but whenever I try to plan the level out ahead of time it never goes the way I want it. Strangely, I work better when I create the level as I go along. It's like I emit a continuous stream of creativity. Oh well, guess I'm just strange.

Want some Autoscrolling hints? Check out the levels in an unchanged Smb3 ROM that have rising/sinking tiles and write down positions of the Autoscrollers. Sometimes you have to use 2 in one level. OR you could be crazy and try new combinations, and see how the tiles move then! There's a pretty good Autoscroller that makes the level scroll REAL FAST to DF, and it's used in the Miniship of World 8.

Here's a question. When you save a level as a Level file, then save it to the ROM, open the ROM and find your level to be corrupted and mixed with an existing level, what happens when you open the level file you just saved? When I did that when trying to remake the Quicksand level in W2, it wouldn't let me reopen my level file! It said "Bad level offset!" This happened twice, and it's really ticking me off because I have a really good idea for the Quicksand level!

Edit: I finished the airship, and it works really great. The only problem is, when you go down the pipe to the boss room, you exit the level instead and the ship disappears! Why does it do that?

Looking at the screen shots freaked me out 'cause the hack looked so, ya know, yowza. Would it be possible to, like, show us some of these new bosses? Hold on, I have ideas already. Make one guy throw hammers like a Hammer Bro, and sometimes three at a time. Then make one guy throw Boomerangs. What you could do is replace the command for shooting 3 Magic Rings (from the Koopaling's wand) into shooting 3 Hammers at the same speed. All you'd be doing is changing the item he launches. Then you'd have to change the direction he'd throw or the hammers would come out at the same direction as the magic rings, and plop to the ground.

I have Super Mario Advance 4, a remake of Smb3. After I mastered every World by beating every tile in them, I became allowed to play any level I wanted, in any world, whenever I wanted! I went to W6 and played the 1st Mushroom house over and over again 'till I had 20 Hammer Suits, then went back and beat every single level in the game with Hammers, just to see if I could. So yes, you can have the Hammer Suit and a Kuribo Shoe at the same time. Personally, I think Fire Flower/Kuribo Shoe is better than the former. Also, I really think Kuribo Shoe should be a regular item that you can take to any level. You'd get it in the same way as before, you just would be able to take it to any level you wanted. I also think Kuribo Shoe should be found in giant ? blocks.

Yep, Lost Levels is THE toughest. I've been to World 9, and it's superduperduperduper cool, but GAWD, trying to beat 8-4, or the "Infernal Demonic Twisted Dream of Bowser" as I call it, is evil evil evilevilevil. Then I tried to play WD-4, the final level in Lost Levels, and I just about seizured from it being so hard.

I still have nightmares about being trapped in W8-4... the walls closing in, Bowser's evil glowing eyes... Hammer Brothers on both sides... saying, "Join the Koopas, join us..." AAAAUGH!!! ...Oh, I was dreaming! Okay, so Lost Levels is the toughest because of 8-4 and similar levels.

I'm gonna say Underwater because nobody said it yet, and I'm unique. My personal fav underwater level is W7-4. Now here you have a level that 99.9% of the population LOATHES ENTIRELY. It used to upset me when I was young, but now that I'm a wizard at the game I find it fun and challenging. I take Fire Flowers or Hammer Suits with me and try to defeat every enemy that appears. Also, I think Blooper babies are kyoooot!

I'll also say Airship, because every Airship level is a side-scroller. My fav Airship Level is W8 Miniship, ya know, that one that scrolls hellishly fast. Again, it's challenging, so I like it a lot. IN FACT, I think there should be an Airship Challenge level that scrolls the same speed and never ends, adding random obstacles until Mario loses. You could compete for a longest time, and of course to de-stress after a long day at school.

Most Mario games are good, but I so hate it when the game doesn't add new stuff after you've beaten the final boss. Like in Paper Mario, an awesome game, right? But you beat Big Bowser and beat the game, reload and there you are, right before the final boss again! Who wants to fight the final boss over and over again? Now, in SMA4, after you've mastered every World you can go back and play any level you want, whenever you want to! That's very important to someone like me because I'm a ROM Hacker and I use the levels in my studies.

I like characters from Smb3, like the Fire Chomp and my bestest buddy the Buster Beetle. I think Buster Beetles should have appeared in Mario and Luigi Superstar Saga. They could, like, pick up each-other and throw each-other at Mario and Luigi! Okay, just an idea... heh heh...

Two of 'em are my favorite: Bloopers and Lakitus. First, Bloopers, because they're so kyooooot! There's some rumors that I have a pet Blooper that I keep in my room, and pet it every night... maybe it's true, maybe not. Second, Lakitus, because they're sophisticated beings. These guys know how to clutch a Spiny Egg in just the right way so not to get stabbed... but to use them as a weapon! Plus they have trained clouds, which is something I have yet to improve. (Actually, I don't need to ride clouds when I can ride Para-Buster Beetles!)

I would really, really like an editor that doesn't shred the levels when you make them from scratch. Looking at DDs Smb3 Overhaul, I'd say he'd be able to do it.

Okay, it happened like this. I am an experienced Buster Beetle trainer. I raise them, I breed them, I battle with them to make them stronger, and in the end I make profit off it. I do this 'cause I love Buster Beetles.
Well, I was out in the plains, racing most of my Buster Beetles like I do every other day. Well, I have this gigantic one, which I call 'Boss Beetle', and on top of being 5 times bigger than normal it's pretty hard to keep tame. Well, as my Buster Beetles were racing, the Boss Beetle leaps up and starts racing around the plains! I jumped up and tried to calm him down by projecting peaceful thoughts to him (I have a few psychic powers), but it made him angrier. He suddenly ran over to a huge boulder, picked it up and chucked it at me.
I managed to dodge the attack, but the impact of the rock on the ground knocked me over. When I got up, Boss Beetle was leaving the plains, commanding every one of the Buster Beetles I took to the plains! He turned around and stared at me before he disappeared behind the hill.

Just recently I discovered the Boss Beetle and his army are headed toward ElecCity, a settlement a few miles from here. I think, with a little help, I'll be able to stop the renegade Boss Beetle and the Buster Beetles. I have only 70 Buster Beetles left, so whoever wants to help me defeat them, let's join forces! --Schwa
