Is there any site with a database of SMW hacks and extra levels, etc? As in, a place where people could review and download SMW hacks without having to search through these forums in order to download new levels/hacks?

I don't see any SMW hacks at that site you mentioned. Perhaps I should try to create a site that would do this.

This is a good list. We need to keep adding to it so I can actually FIND all the great SMW hacks out there.

Are there any good, mostly completed ROM hacks of A Link to the Past in existence?

I was going to search the forum, but I don't see a search link anywhere.... where is it?

If making a website for it will delay the release by even a week, just release the damn thing and let us play! :-)

No, he's probably just not finished yet. Why on earth would he stall or 'wait until the poll is not so close'?

Hurray! I look forward to seeing the hack tomorrow morning. As far as what to name it... you're the one who knows what the hack is about and what's in it, so you'll need to decide that. But it probably doesn't matter - this isn't a situation where the name is going to make or break the success of your creation. You're not trying to market it to 10 million people through print ads.

Did you change any graphics at all?

Personally, I like it when most of the graphics remain the same in ROM hacks - otherwise it usually ends up looking ugly or distracting. Just change the levels and it's a whole new game to me. Much better than changing the graphics and leaving the levels the same.

Another question: it sounds like you are still working out "2 problems" but plan to release tomorrow morning? Does this mean you haven't done any bug testing OR polishing? Like Chickenlump said, "The best hacks are those that you really put your heart and soul into, take your time with, and mold it like a work of art. If your going to do something, do it right, and do it for yourself."

And, if you haven't bug tested or polished at all, it can't really fit that very accurate description of "the best hacks."

Unless, of course, you're wanting us to be the bug-testers, and to help you with polishing it, which is fine by me. Or, of course, unless you've been testing and polishing extensively all along.

But hey, still VERY excited to play it. You've obviously put lots of hard work into this thing.

Sorry, I'm pretty new to ROM hacking. What do you mean "I never created a map"? "map" means about 10 different things to me...

Or you could go for that old trick:

Zelda 3.5 - Whatever Whatever

or play up the existing pun in Zelda III's title, like:

Zelda - Link goes to the past

Yes, crappy and corny, but I thought I'd post them if for no other reason than to make you laugh.

Yes, I always think of "completely new adventure" as new overworld and dungeon maps (and possibly new graphics). Hacks where just the text is changed to alter the story is not a completely new adventure. Hacks where the sprites are changed to look like other characters isn't a completely new adventure.

Just started playing your hack. Just from the opening sequence, I'd suggest a title of "Legend of Zelda - The Last Maiden" or "Zelda - The Last Princess", perhaps?

MUAHAHAHAHA! Okay, I played through the whole fucking castle sequence and didn't notice a single difference. Why? Because I'd made a typo in renaming the IPS file and it wasn't the same name as the ROM!!!!! Okay, NOW I'm starting to play your mod :-)

So, anyway, my title suggestions came from the opening text of Zelda III, not your hack :-)

First, the name entering screen is totally messed up. I hit random buttons in order to get it to advance (and came up with the name "aa").

So far, the overworld is just a bit different, but the castle is 99% the same (cept for colors) and the general "plot" is still the same (go to the castle, rescue the princess, escape through the sewers, etc.)

There is a glitch in the upper left hand corner of Kakakiro village. Just left of the "8" stones at the left of the building on the hill are the tiles for the bottom of the door to that building - just kind of sitting there. Sorry, is this the "door" glitch you were talking about, or is this something different? Anyway, when I went back there later, that glitch wasn't there anymore (though I still think the roof of that building looks awfully strange - lots o weird tiles that weren't meant to go next to each other.

The little crab-like monster hidden under a bush in the area just to the east of Kakakiro village has a graphical glitch on it - when facing/moving certain directions, parts of its body are missing (usually one of the claws). I'm talking about the one near the treasure field.

Upon buying the 30 bombs for 100 ruppees from the elephant man in Kakiro village, he says Thank you very much twice in a row. Oh yeah, but apparently I can only carry 10 or something, so he ripped me off - was that intended?

The always-moving spike block in the first room of the cave to the west of Kakiro village didn't move unless I was on the screen. I mean, it was moving at first, then I moved to the right of the room and it went left and never came back to the right until I moved left and brough it back into the screen.

The chest that appears when you kill the floating skull enemy in the second room of that cave is unopenable. Is this on purpose? I'm betting the key to the door is in it, and so I can't continue in that cave because the chest doesn't open...

The first time I was in the screen with the witch's hut, there was nothign wrong, but when I went back, I got the same little graphical glitch mentioned above about the Kakiro village building and mentioned by um... whoever posted before mabout the same glitch. I leave and go back, and it's gone again.

So yeah, I don't know what I can do or where I can go without getting into that unopenable chest in the western cave.

Anyway, the color changes were good and interesting without being ugly or distracting. I'm glad you changed some of the overworld a little bit.

Otherwise, don't know what to say because I don't know of a way to get through that western cave level without the key.

I jumped off the side of the raised area in the first room of the second floor in the western cave (the one with two of those red monsters that just bounce off the walls, and with the switch hidden under the pot), and that gets me stuck in the wall. I had to blow myself up with bombs in order to restart the level.

But yes, you're right, after the castle, it gets much better. Good work.

Oh, and when I leave the screen with the witch's hut, the tiles for the roof change oddy as I leave. Perhaps this is an emulator error, though.

Okay, when you emerge from the cave in the first area with lots of water, and go left a screen, then go left once more, as you're going left that last time you pass THROUGH a tree to get to the other side, and when you go below the tree to go back right, you go through the tree/foliage/wahtever. If you go back right above the tree, you go THROUGH some rocks and end up on the cliffside.

Also, after you go left that last time, if you go down, you end up stuck on the roof of the palace.

Actually, this whole area is full of messed up tiles. I'm assuming you didn't intend for people to get to that screen? Of course, swimming to adjacent screens from here leads to all sort of odd areas...

Okay, back to the screen where you emerge from the cave in the first area of lots of water. Move right against the line of foliage where the bottom corner meets the vertical edge, and you'll be greeted with a bug. Keep holding right, and you'll be greeted with the most entertaining animation I've ever seen in a Zelda game :-)

You can do the same thing by holding right against the foliage on that screen where the vertical wall of foliage dips in a little bit, near the top. Only this time, when Link disappears into the next area, hold down or up for the fun animation.

In actuality, you can get that bug at about 6 different locations on that edge of that screen.

It's also quite irritating that if you go up on that screen, as far to the left or right as you can while still moving up a screen, you will be trapped in an endless loop of jumping into deep water.

Oh, and thank you for including the shooting gallery game. Otherwise, collecting 500 coins for the flippers would've taken forever.

Also, in the huge screen where you get the flippers, near the top at the far left, is a place where there is nothing blocking you from going left, but you cannot.

Also, I don't recall? Did Zoras in the original jump out and walk around?

Loved the bodiless guard in the forest dungeon...if it was intentional.
