*reviews his own hack and commits hara-kiri*

Holy crap in a bucket on a sunny day in Death Valley...

(cries) I must learn to rip GFX. NOW. *enters cybernetic coma and attempts to copy and paste knowledge*

...that didn't work, but I wish it did...

Seriously, those are freaking amazing. Looking extremely forward to playing this game, it looks like an absolute winner...high five for being awesome, Ice Man.

Ahhh, excellent. A game that defies the new standard by saying "Hey! Check this out! I can have cool levels and not a thousand pounds of ExGFX!"

...that's the entirely "anti-exgfx" side of me, of course, I was very amazed and envious of the talent of people like Ice Man, Peter and Smwedit, so...I'll shut up...

Nevertheless, this hack looks very good. I'll give it a try and edit this post later...

EDIT:
Holy crap! Your level design is amazing! You've inspired me to make due with what I can...onward to hacking!

*rushes off*

I beat Iggy's Castle and will play more later, it's a really well-designed and thought out piece of work.

Excellence, in that case, I can (for once) actually get my original plans to work. (waits patiently for next SMILE release)

I remade the first room in Crateria and moved the ship to the lower-right corner. Unfortunately, when I play it in ZSNES, a portion of the screen turns into purple tiles, the ship is missing its' bottom half and I fall through nothing, reappearing out of the right side of the screen onto solid blocks in mid-air...O-o

Is there something special you have to do when moving the ship's starting position, or am I plagued by something else?

Hmmm...that's a problem. The game works fine other than the fact that half my ship is missing...looks kinda weird and you can't enter it. Grrr. Hopefully someone knows how to get this working, although the mention of the hardcoded data is some help...thanks, anyway.

Posted on 08-06-05 05:55 PM, in Well, I can't even PLAY my Super Metroid hack... Link
...because of some stupid glitch that I can't fix...

Okay, here are some pictures of what I've done (these are angelfire so you have to paste them into your address box):

http://www.angelfire.com/bug/morth/ShipError1.png
http://www.angelfire.com/bug/morth/ShipError2.png

The first picture shows Samus's ship as I've constructed it. The second shows the room it's in - the ship is still located five panels to the left and five from the top.

So, the problem is, when I fire up ZSNES and start a new game, the screen scrolls to the lower-right and Samus falls through nothing until the game freezes...

Really, this is a major problem, because I can't even test my hack or do anything. I have no idea how to get this fixed and am losing my mind...someone please give me a hand here...

Thanks...

Well, I solved it by starting my hack over...luckily I hadn't done much more than a few rooms in Crateria so it wasn't too hard. Keep the ship where it is (5 tiles from the left and five tiles from the top of a room) and build Crateria around it. You can even fool the game by setting the room properties to, let's say, 7 by 7, and then changing all the scrolling areas except for the ship's and another to non-scrolling, and using the map you can make it appear that the room is only two tiles long. It's really simple, actually...

How do you make doors connect to one another? I know how to open the Edit Door menu, and it probably has something to do with the Clone Door and all those weird yellow and pink functions at the top, but I don't know what they mean and would like to venture into other areas of my game for testing...

Thanks to anyone who replies

Well I know about changing scroll areas to blue, green and red...is that all you were talking about or is there a bigger scroll editor?

So the first function is the ID of the room you're going into or the room you're in?

Seems easy enough once I figure out what all these hex numbers mean

So basically SMILE's Index and Unknowns for the "S" Scrolling PLM should be set to 8F? I understand the part about 01 00 01, but what if the player was to go through a series of blocks, is that what the arrows are for?

I don't understand the "-01 (second screen) 01 (turns from red to blue) 80 (stops reading scroll data) part...

Is it edited in SMILE or through a hex editor?

Interesting idea, very interesting idea...reminds me of the Hero/Dark story in Sonic Adventure 2...this must've taken some serious work beyond any understanding I will ever have. Congradulations, you've officially become a God of Hacking. Yay for polytheism!

Romhacking? Dead? Unlikely. I still find it as interesting as I did in 2001. Especially since back then, all I could do was SMW, and now I've got Yoshi's Island and Super Metroid, easily two of my most favorite games that I've deisnged levels for on paper during my wee child days, to mess around with.

We've got a long way to go before people say, "Romhacking? ...mmeh..."

Okay, I've pretty much gotten the Door Editor working. Woot. On Ice Board, GWD told me how to work it (clone the door you're emerging from, transfer the properties into the door you're entering, and then vice-versa) but it's still not working right. I think it may have something to do with the "Make sure the BTS Value is set to what number door it is" or something like that.

What's a BTS Value? I really need to, you know, test my hack, and if the doors won't work, I can't do that.

Hmmm...my problem is my rooms have too many doors. One room that has one door leading out of it has doors that go up to $17 ...and I can't get rid of them.

I'd love to make new doors and I'm sure the effing pointers or whatever is messing it up, because I've messed around with every X and Y value I can think of...but I, unfortunately, am one of those unintelligent hackers who couldn't figure out hex to save his life.

Okay, how about these odd problems:

I finally figured out what Y value to use and the door won't open right. When I enter it, it appears above the door I'm supposed to emerge from and Samus falls to the ground. Some doors I enter don't even go to the door, they put Samus in some weird place, the screen scrolls to the lower-right, and it freezes O-o

...I hate doors...

I'm sure doors are easy. Probably very easy. It's like my expedition with Lunar Magic's ExGFX feature all over again - I was confused as hell before but eventually I'll get it. What I'm thinking is that I'm missing some crucial step. The doors aren't working right, when I enter them, they aren't aligning themselves up with the door they're supposed to go to.

Am I missing something?? 'Cause, like...I'm confused, and I need help. Is there something that has to do with the room properties, or pointers, or scrolling...damn...I hate all this weird stuff. (explodes)

Whaddya mean, the center of the screen? Does the game allow for doors to be placed in the middle of an room, so long as there's a no-scrolling area behind it?

And I don't know what IRC is, but I've been saying "explodes" for like...seven years...

Woot. I'm sure I'll get them eventually, and thanks for all your help, Drewseph. Messing around with existing doors seems to work fine.
