My advice is that you shouldn't use a scrollbox over a normal stretchable layout, use it only when you have to. Sure, you may think it looks so spiffy because you care about it so much, but we generally don't like scrollbar layouts.

Ahh, so it was you. I look at avatars to distinguish people without layouts, so you had the same avatar (Bowser in his castle)...

Atma, the dunes are (I think) from SMAS SMB2. Correct me if I'm wrong, I've seen something like it in gameplay and in the ROM when I was digging for good rips.

Hello, all SMW hacking sprite drawing fans! I present you... a sprite contest! Mods, please don't move this, especially to Modern Art. Well, that is if you don't want to move it to the Trash Can. People post sprites normally in Modern Art, and it will completely defeat the purpose of this, which is to see the spriting ability of the SMW Hackers with a more organized fashion. If it is moved anywhere, this contest will end because of the lack of reason. These are for SMW-friendly sprites only. Here are the rules.

1. DO NOT RIP. If I see a rip, you'll be disqualified from all other sprite contests and this one. And if you steal someone else's sprite, they'll get the nomination if they do get one. Just please don't try. Only draw the stuff by yourself. You can use any graphics tools, I don't mind that. Except for those little stampy things where they print a random sprite. They mostly suck anyway.

2. Your size limit is a 4-KB SNES 4BPP .bin file, and you can use and hack as many palettes as you want. There are only the SNES colors and the file size to limit your creativity. 4BPP means 16 colors. That's 4096 bytes of binary...

3. No entering garbage sprites. This is a serious sprite contest, and save your "BEST SPRITE EVAR" for April Fools' Day, or even better, keep them to yourself. Then we don't have to waste time looking at old jokes.

4. No actual .bin files. Just take a screenshot of your sprite(s) in your tool with the CORRECT PALETTE. Don't scramble your tiles up to the point that you can't even see them right away. .png files are recommended, and .jpg is okay when you have a more detailed thing.

5. Absolutely no dissing each other's works. I'll be the judge, and I might hire others if the job gets to be too big for one person. You can give constructive criticism or helpful praise (not "that's good") in the thread. If you want the person's sprite, contact him/her privately and it's none of my business unless it's my sprite.

I hope that was clear.

So, you can enter sprites separately or enter them in different categories if you feel they can win in both (or more!) Your sprites will be judged, as explained before, by me and maybe others. You may want to note the category you're going for, so the judges can actually decipher it easlier, and names for the sprites could make judges like it more... So far in this contest version 1.0 there will be these categories: (suggestions are more than welcome)

Cutest Sprite
Coolest Sprite
Most Realistic Sprite
Most Mario-esque sprite
Most Unique Sprite
Best Nostalgic/Retro Feel (REMEMBER, NO RIPPING!)

Overall has three winners:
Best Overall Sprite - Gold Award
Second Best Overall Sprite - Silver Award
Third Best Overall Sprite - Bronze Award

I will post the results after everyone got their chance to share the sprites.

Don't worry, 8 sprites are plentifully plenty. You might even want to make that an animated GIF, that looks awesome!

Your giant goomba is awesome, Atma. Entering will be closed when I feel that this contest will really be pretty big. And that might take a while... Maybe at least 1 or 2 months.

I believe the Demo World Desert World thing was drawn by hand, I'm not sure. The Map16 stuff wasn't, obviously.

LK: Go ahead, enter all you want!
JJ: Try to make it SMW-sprite-Map16-friendly. It gets bonus points, a LOT of them. But really, try to make them at least fit one of the giant or big sprites (Mega Mole, Big Boo, Gas Bubble, Banzai Bill). You can alter their Map16 (Ctrl+Shift+PgDown in 16x16 editor).
Atma: The face does look kind of weird. Is it just a rounded explosion of the SMB1 one? That's what I did for a giant star...
Orynider: I love that interpretation! Does it replace Yoshi?

To prevent group depression, I told Kario I would continue Acmlm World after finishing SMS2, or I could work on both simultaneously. Now say "yay", I order you.

I think you should continue from this, but improvise what you can since it's that old, your skills are probably much better now...

If you're talking about decompressing the data, that's different. You'll have to find how the graphics are stored and transform them using the pattern into raw tile editor-openable files. Chickenlump was nice enough to release all the YI GFX he found decompressed, and it is really nifty. Chickenlump, if you are reading this, please post the link again.

Very nice screenshots, though the spectral room's shot doesn't show too much detail and variance. That's probably because it's taken in a repetitive place, then.

I'll give my two cents on ripping:
I completely agree. Some people will rip from various games, mainly SMAS, just for it to look good and "be an original retro thingy". If they do a worse job making original graphics, I don't care. I'd still prefer that. Atma is different. He rips from various games, configures it a lot for detail, and sometimes puts fitting rips together. The fact that he's not relying on ripping makes his hack original. Well, he draws better than most game companies anyway... DWTLC squished some awesome (I must admit to that) SMAS rips together by SMB3 tilesets, and that made it SMAS-ish, but at least correctly SMAS-ish. If someone ripped a SMB2 mushroom, a SMB1 pipe, and a SMB3 ice block, it would be called mixing, which is even better than ripping as long as the stuff fits. If it doesn't, it's called mismatching. The completely original hacks, Sunny Side World, Super Mario Odyssey, and Just Another Mario Hack, display a truly awesome creativity level, and SS had some odd rips that are becoming to be popular. Sure, the GFX might be more simplistic, but it doesn't add to the way we get tired of the same rip over and over. So don't think about your hack, think about your hack's players.

Wow, that's amazing! The Green Island palette looks a lot better, the cave BG fits now, and the tropical fish palettes are very original. Try to decorate the title screen more though, it looks kind of plain.

This was mentioned before, and Fu was going to put SMA2 support into LM 1.51, I believe. He didn't have time to finish the massive program coding and ASM, so he removed it altogether from his released version, but I think his copy of LM may have partial SMA2 support that he did figure out. Prehaps he forgot to remove some of this remaining data, or he just kept it for expert-puzzling purposes.

The feature that's not supported might even be the title screen recording, which is probably impossible in SMAS right now!
The other finds get to the point.
I wish I could help here, I feel useless commenting on this data... v_v

Gandalf, FPI realized that and changed it. He put up a new patch where the end pipe leads to the second part of the level.

I'm assuming you mean the Golden Yoshi Palace. I can't beat that either...

If you think this way, you should try to improve the parts you did before. Then you may have an enjoyable hack. I just made a hack to test out LM and round up my skills, and I unloaded them in a separate hack. I even had to make another hack in the middle to improve!
