Ever use a gameshark? If not, go buy one and attempt to make your own codes with one, this will lead you into having to learn hexadecimal

someone asked a similiar thing earlier and this was my response: This is something that many new rom hackers don't realize about games: you can't add things to the rom just like that. Why? It works like this. Lets say you have a long row of cup holders. Lets say, 100. Now pretend 75 of those cup holders have cups in them and there's a list showing who's cup is in which holder, but the thing is, there can't be anyspaces between cups, i.e, all empty holders must be at the end of the row. Now, if you want to insert a new cup in the middle of the row, then you have to move all the cups past the point you want to add a new cup at down 1 holder and update the list of names who have cups in this row. Now, if all the cup holders are full and you want to add a cup, what can you do? You can take the cup thats in the holder you want to put the new cup in and trash it and replace it with your new cup. Now whoever's cup that was will be pissed when they go to find that they're cup isn't there. This works the same in nearly NES game editors. You're restricted to the number of bytes you can fill up. You can't tack on more bytes like with SNES. Some game editors will allow you to add something and move the rest of the bytes down and update pointers (analogous to the list of names of people with cups in the row). However, SMB3 doesn't work like this. Using free form mode, you basically take a copy of the row (the level your editing) and do what you want to it. However, when you go to save, if your new level is larger than before, it will overwrite another level's data and the bytes will NOT be shifted down. You must make sure the size of the level is the same or less to prevent this problem. Another solution is to just make all your levels from scratch, but that requires tedious pointer calculations and keeping track of them yourself, but the benefits out weigh the tediousness. |

lol Vanguard, I'm good, but not THAT good. But I still appreciate the comments. This is looking to turn out to be an MA killer for sure |

I guess I should say it here: There is no seasons aspect in the game anymore. I took that idea out because I felt like I couldn't execute it very well, so I'm just gonna keep doing stuff to keep the game flowing. It's already an excellent hack and things are definitely different from SMB3 and MA. Once the first demo comes out, you won't be disappointed ;D And as for the Luigi Sprites: if you look in earlier screenshots, you'll see that some sprites are Luigi-ish from SMAS, not mario, so I'm still working on putting those in. why would bbitmaster use that for a hex editor? He's obviously using Visual Studio to work on FCEUxd and showing us a screen of what FCEUxd looks like when doing some serious hacking, which looks lot like my screen. I need to take another screen cuz my last one was really a mock up, when I was hacking real good last night, I had windows all over the place.

Once you earn a skill, you keep it, even if your score falls below the normal required score to obtain it (yes, you can lose score by dying). You'll change abilities on the map screen by using select. The skill you see with the weird sparkles is a temporary tile I used to show where it would display. The current skills are: 2x invincibility, shell sleeper (some here may have heard it called monster tamer), 4x recoil invincibility, and jump higher. I should have about 8, maybe more in all. |

Extra eye candy is definitely something that's gonna be in this one, but as far as the seasonal aspect: I COULD make it a theme for an entire world, sort of how Click Clock (or is that Tick Tock?) Woods in Banjo and Kazooie. For more eye candy... I used a very cheap method to produce a transparency effect, sure, but it works. Plus, I had to add a handful of code to make it so that the water was foreground, since every tile in SMB3 is background by default. Plus, you can't see it here, that water Luigi is in has current to it, like in SMW, ;D |

I've taken precautions against people being able to earn the abilities quickly. I like doing the score idea because it forces people to go for the high score, which is something I see a lot of people don't even bother doing nowadays, plus, it gives another purpose to the score beyond getting the n-spade card game.

Amen to that Gavin. Screw how many times a game has been hacked. I've hacked SMB3 twice now and I'm still enjoying doing it.

Quite honestly, this thread is pointless. I don't want to have to check this thread everyday to find out who needs help with what editor. I honestly think individual threads for help is the best way, that way, those who have the help know where to apply it, rather than search through countless posts to find who needed what help with which editor.

This is easy, use the other pipe that you can go down, the first one. The second pipe that allows this will always send you to the starry background, ignore pointer settings. And as for your phantom goal card problem, I would have helped but I was at work all day. So if you ever need help on SMB3 and don't get it for a while, just hang on a little longer and I'll eventually come around to the rescue. (edited by DahrkDaiz on 04-25-04 03:34 PM) |
