You obviously didn't read the rules: the max size for 1 level alone is 500 bytes, the max size for a level with a 2nd part/bonus level is 800 combined (meaning the single level can be 500, the bonus being 300 or a mix of 400 and 400).

Edit: And it's not that I _need_ a break, I just came into other things I'd rather do at the moment. Afterwards, I'll finish my current project and probably quite NES rom hacking for good, who knows though.

This thread was utterly pointless. You gave absolutely no details about your contest. This is close worthy. Next time, be sure to plan this stuff a bit better.

Posted on 05-02-05 04:56 AM, in Re-writing a Game's TSA Engine? Link
for SMB, I changed the TSA data, how the tiles are actually arranged on the pattern table has absolutely no bearing on the TSA data. I just modified the TSA data to fit the pattern table I created, rather than creating a pattern table to fit the TSA.

For SMB2, the game drew the tiles based on level tile id numbers, meaning one 16x16 block had a unique id (256 in all) and that id was used as an index into the TSA data table, however, the method it used limited how many ids you could have unique TSA data for. SMB3's method used a 1028 byte table which the first 256 bytes was the upper left hand corner, the next 256 was the upper right hand corner, and so on..., tile number and used 4 indexed tables to draw each unique tile id number (tile id nubmers are stored in RAM for SMB2 and SMB3 both in the 6000-about 75FF range). Anyways, there was enough free space in SMB2 so I could include one giant 1KB (1028 byte) table and used the same SMB3 method for indexing TSA data so each tile id could have a unique set of TSA data.

So for SMB2, I just lucky that the drawing engines were very similiar (with SMB3), I just changed how it referenced the data so I could make full use of every tile id number.

And to make sure your bank swapping isn't interrupted by an... er.. interrupt! And yes, it CAN happen (and has happpened to me several times with my SMB3DX hack) so you'll want to make sure to modify the interrupt handling code to check for or back up any bank swapping that may be in the progress when an interrupt happens.

Hiryuu, remember, what you're doing is on Home/SM so your timing is WAY WAY off, so you may have "almost AAAd" it at home, but at the arcade you know you'd get your ass chewed up and spat out by that song

There is a byte in RAM that determines what item you will receive when a treasure chest appears. There's a sprite that will change this byte in RAM, but it can also be changed on the map screen, depending on the Hammer Bros. or ship sprite a level is triggered on.

I've found the data for this a few times but have never actually document it. The Coin Ship cannot have a unique item for it, it's item is determined by the sprite that it was changed from. I'll find all the data sometime soon (can't do it right now, kinda busy with other stuff) and get back to you on that.

I haven't heard of an Extreme 2 outside of GamePro's "leak" and GamePro is the last place I'd just game information from.

Isn't Paranoia Survivor Max and Max Period on Extreme 1? If not then they're dumb.

And I think Konami can blow my nuts as far as their American versions of DDR. They could care less about us.

Give us Extreme 2 at the arcade, then we can talk about DDR sequels

I assume those are on keyboard, right Xk? Well... here's what I just did on pad...

Spin the Disc AAA
Freckles AAA
Twinbee AAA
Kind Lady AAA

All of these are on Stepmania, using my Cobalt Flux pad, and the arcade timing settings, so it's slightly easier since I'm using the Cobalt Flux, but I bet I could pull these off at the arcade with a small bit of extra practice.

I sure did, and talk about FUCKING WHOA.

For those that missed it, here's the run down of what you missed that I namely care about:

Gameboy micro, a fucking super tiny version of Gameboy Advance with the brightest screen today. Not a successor, but it looks way fucking cooler than the other hand helds thus far.

New Super Mario Bros., an official DS title that's on it's way.

Mario Soccer and Mario Baseball (along with Mario Party 7).

Fucking wicked new video of The Legend of Zelda: Twighlight Princess.

Revalation of Nintendo Revolution. They had a prototype on stage with them. And the most interesting part about the Revolution: backwards compatible. Not with just GCN, no no, with the wifi internet, you can get Nintendo content from the past TWENTY YEARS. That's right, NES, SNES, even N64 games downloadable to play on the DS. Whooa....

This is just the best stuff I liked. Others will come and talk about other stuff later.
