Not to mention, changing a mapper for expanding a ROM generally "breaks" any editors that are used for it, since some offsets will be changed. I had to manually hack SMB3 Workshop in a hex editor to have it load graphics corectly for my hack, but lucky, it has no error checking for loading levels outside of the original ROM size, but other editors might not be so lucky.

As for MMC3's CHR-ROM/PRG-ROM size, I've found (atleast from the emulators I've tried) that PRG-ROM size must be 128, 256 or 512Kb and CHR-ROM must be 64, 128 or 256KB. I'm sure other mappers have similiar limitations (MMC5 can have up to a MB of each I think, but I'm sure Disch will come by ahd thwart me on this.)

Mario Adventure was a very big task to accomplish, and the bulk of the work of that hack was the levels.

SMB3DX is the same story, however, with SMB3 Workshop, making levels is faster and easier, but my ideas are running dry!

How would you like to make levels for my SMB3 hack? Just enter my level creation contest, and you could be a lucky hacker who gets to be a level designer/beta tester for my hack!

Here's the low-down:

1. The Premise

Using the original, unhacked SMB3, create your own level (either from scratch or from editing, doesn't matter to me) preferably using M3I or SMB3 Workshop. After you have it just the way you like it, save the level in a seperate .m3l file (M3I and SMB3 Workshop only allow this) and send it to me via email (found below).

2. Deadlines

You have until May 22nd to send me the .m3l file of your level. Any late entries simply will be refused. Limit only ONE entry per person. If you create a better level and would like to replace your current entry, that is fine, just send me the level under the same alias/email address, but only one will be used for the contest.

3. Nominations

I will play every level I receive and choose up to 10 (or less) levels I believe are the best of the bunch. If there are less than 10 levels I believe are on par with what I like, then that number will be used. Afterwards, I will place these levels in a single 1 world ROM Hack which will be released to the public for voting. Nominated level creators will notified if they are nominated.

4. Voting

After the nominations hack has been released, I will wait a few days and start accepting votes for their favorite levels. Levels will be numbered on the map screen and will be anonymous to everyone playing them but the original creators. Anyone who points out what level they did publically will be disqualified immediately.

Players of the hack will submit a ranking of their 3 most favorite levels. No ties for a rank are allowed. First place gets 3 points, second gets 2 and third will get 1. I will tally up the votes manually.

5. Winners

The winners will possibly get their level used in my hack. Also, they will be requested to create ATLEAST ONE level for my hacking, using my level engine for SMB3DX (which includes special things and new enemies not found in SMB3). Creating more than on level for the hack is at the discretion of the winner and will not be requested to create any more, but they can if they like.

In addition of getting credit for their used level, the winners will get a demo or two of SMB3DX so they can get a feel of what's going on with the hack and get ideas of their own.

They will also get a final version before public release for final testing/reviewing.

6. Judging

Level design is the key factor in the contest (no duh!). I will look for key features in the levels:

Terrain: The terrain must be interesting. Use bricks, pipes, note blocks, conveyor belts, spikes, falling platforms, etc to create interesting situations that require more than normal jump from A to B skill.

Enemies: The use of enemies is very important to level design. Putting enemies in odd positions that requires a bit of thinking is a good thing, but a shear high number of enemies is NOT a good thing. If you use an enemy generator, don't throw in tons of enemies on the screen at the same time! A Koopa or Goomba here and there with generated Flying Cheep Cheeps is a decent idea: remember, with enemy generators, the generation of the enemies is the main obsticle, with the terrain providing the extra challenge.

Scenery: The level needs to also look good. Be slightly generous with bushes, clouds, etc with the level (don't go over board though!).

Size: Size is a big factor with the leve, since when you create a level with my a hack, it must be confined with preset level sizes (for the most part with a few rare exceptions). Creating a good level withing a size limit takes quite a bit of skill. A general size of the level (not including enemies) is 250-350 bytes (which is displayed in SMB3 Workshop in the status bar when saving or clicking any part of the level that's not occupied by an object).

Powerups: A level without power-ups is a BAD THING. You must always give the player a chance to recover from a mistake! Also, try to create situations suited best for certain power-ups (note, in SMB3DX, each power-up has a special skill that allows access to other parts of a level not accessible by any other power-ups, such as Fireballs melting Ice Blocks, or Raccoon's flying).

Bonus points: Creating autoscroll, vertical scroll, or rising tide levels will result in brownie points with me. Good alternate scrolling levels are hard to come by!

7. Submissions

To submit a level, save a level as a .m3l file and send it to DahrkDaiz@hotmail.com listing the following information:

Your main internet alias.
The object/graphic type of the level. (plains, underground, airship, etc).
Whether the level ends with a boss or not. (Boom-Boom and Koopa Kids are bosses)
Any special notes about the level. (such as if there's some puzzle aspect to it, give the solution to it)

If your level has bonus areas or other parts, then you must submit all the m3i files that the level depends on. I will modify the bonus level pointers myself, but the actual "pointer" objects (that decide where the pointer works and where it leads to in the next level) must match up. If it doesn't, the level is void.

8. Restrictions

1. ABSOLUTE MAX LEVEL SIZE: 500 Bytes FOR A SINGLE LEVEL, 800 bytes TOTAL FOR MULTIPLE AREA LEVELS (SUCH AS BONUS LEVELS OR TWO PART LEVELS).
2. ABSOLUTE ENEMY SIZE: 20 Enemies.
3. MUST USE EXISTING NON-HACKED SMB3 ROM. (PRG 0, PRG 1, or PC10 is fine).
4. ONLY ONE SUBMISSION PER PERSON. SUBMITTING A SECOND, THIRD, ETC LEVEL WILL TAKE THE PLACE OF THE PREVIOUS LEVEL AS YOUR PICK.
5. LEVEL MUST NOT END WITH BOWSER.
6. LEVEL MUST EITHER HAVE A GOAL CARD OR BOOM-BOOM/KOOPA KID FIGHT.
7. ENEMIES MUST NOT CONFLICT (A BOO AND A BLOOPER ON THE SAME SCREEN WILL CAUSE SPRITE GRAPHICS CONFLICTS, NONE OF THIS IS ALLOWED).
8. LEVEL TERRAIN MUST MATCH UP! (NO COINS INSIDE OF BLOCKS OR CLOUDS CUTTING INTO HILL SLOPES).

9. Disclaimer

I hold no responsibility for any damage done to contestants personally from downloading a ROM in the purposes of this contest. I hold the right to modify a level used to be in the nomation hack or to be placed in my hack at my discretion. Deadlines may change at my discretion, but will not be done without notification. I hold the right to refuse to accept any entries. I will not help you in the creation of your level. If you have SMB3 Workshop questions, don't come to me for help directly (such as via email or instant message as I will probably be busy doing other stuff, IRC chat @ irc.esper.net #rom-hacking is a good place to find me if you need help and I'll try to help if at all possible).

10. Have fun!

Bemanistyle has them all. http://www.bemanistyle.com/sims/author.php?id=5943 ...

You guys are forgetting: this is a 10 foot rating for the pad. Ever do the original Witch Doctor on pad? Doing that chorus run 5 times is extremely tiring, and it's a 2 minute song as it is. I'd say this is harder than Sakura, hence what I based my rating on.

*sigh* this has been discussed amongst the moderators, don't bring this up here and don't act like a mod. We're handling it ourselves...

As for the ACTUAL TOPIC...

I think that changing English from the defacto language to the de-jure language is a bit iffy. Think about this: Christianity is the de-facto religion in America. It's expected of most "Americans" though we don't have an official religion, that's against the law by the Constitution. I believe that assigning an official language to America has a loose (keyword, loose) similarity here.

One of the things about America that made it a "great" country is that it's a melting pot of cultures. This includes languages, so assigning an official language could open the door for some radical new laws, of which I don't really want to try to think of examples of right now, but my point is probably clear enough. An official religion could be used to force others to be of that religion, forcing a language may force you to learn that language (even though it's hard to function well in America without knowing English, that should be the right of the citizen, not the government).

I found the code for Sonic 2 to change "Tails" name to Miles in the lives status (and end level text) by pressing Up Down Down Down Up at the title screen.

Well I decided to extend the contest to the end of May. Why? I'm not getting in very many entries, plus, there's somethings in real life I'm tending to and things will be settled in mid-May and I'll probably get back to rom-hacking then.

So the Deadline for level submissions is now May 22nd!

Well, I bet a lot of you are wondering about my activity. As is the way of most of us nerds, I've come into a bit of social life and things are really exciting for me right now and things won't die down for me until probably mid-May, and until then, I won't be doing any hacking and hardly responding to the forums, but fear not! I am not leaving and I will be back full force this summer and promise to have SMB3DX released by fall this year at the latest (when school starts, I'll have to give up big projects like that).

So until then, if you PM or email me, it'll probably remain unanswered for a few more weeks, just sit tight and I will return!

I highly doubt that it is and if it were, I'm sure the format of it would have been changed some to fit the codec they would have written for the GBA, but MP3 isn't an ideal format to be using for cart based system.

Yes, I put this in the ROM Hacking forum because I'm receiving a dozen emails/PMs from rom hackers who, like me, probably don't visit general chat very often and the rest of the board hardly knows who I am as it is.

My away time mostly affects my rom hacking projects so I figured ROM Hacking forum was the best place to post this. If the admin's have a problem with it, they'll tell me themselves.

How do you know this, iamhiro? I never said the hack was going to be done soon, and I haven't even chosen anybody from the contest to design levels, in fact, I haven't even played a single submission!

SMB3DX's main thing is levels, yes, but I still have a few ASM hacks I want to add, plus the maps need to be redone.

Just hang tight folks, it'll come
