Heres another picture from River City Ransom, the text istelf is a parody of a whole ordeal I went through back in april, when someone stole a copy from one of my beta testers and actually threatened to leak it.

edit: and yes folks, I say again, it does support table files.

Posted on 09-08-04 08:10 AM, in Important: giving rom-hackers self-confidence Link
Lack of motivation has really effected me more than I'd like to admit as well.

A good example was way back in October 2000. I had just got pretty good at programming stuff in C with allegro. And I got really interested in finding and figuring out the megaman 3 level data, because at the time no-one had ever done that before and it was one of my favorite games. After using a curruptor and figuring it all out (there were no good debuggers at the time, a curruptor was the only way) I set out to make the first megaman 3 editor completely from scratch.

After 1 day I had it displaying the pattern tables, then on the 2nd day you should have seen the look on my face when I got the top man stage to display and I got it to reading other levels. And on day 3 I got it to editing almost everything. The last two days were focused on sprite support as I remember. But the whole process took 5 days, starting completely from scratch, where I typed int main() to the point of release. I still think this was indeed one of my most amazing projects, Simply because I did it so quick.

I was sure this thing was going to be the best thing to hit the rom hacking community in a while. I mean, here I had a nice editor where you could click and place things, it even sort of had an undo where you could press F4 to reload the rom. It was even the first editor of its kind to have sprite support. (many others have followed in its steps and display sprites as numbers that you move around) I had a nice little document that explained how it all worked. I even gave out my complete source code. Where could I have possibly gone wrong? I couldn't wait to see what all cool new levels I would get to play that were going to be made with my editor!

Upon releasing it though, All I got was people telling me how hard it was to use. And lots of stupid questions that were covered quite clearly in the readme. What a LETDOWN! To this very day, I hold that my mega-edit 3 is NOT hard to use at all, and I believe it is the best mega man 3 level editor out there. But no-one else seems to think so.

I can't help but wonder what all else I may have been inspired to do over the past 4 years, had a few people taken some interest in my stuff.

Atleast I do have plenty of motivation to work on FCEUXD.

At last after editors have been available for almost 4 years, I'll finally be able to play a really nice complete megaman 3 level hack. All I can say is really great work.

I'm pretty good at finding offsets that tell how enemies behave among other thing, if you'd like any help with something, then feel free to drop me a line on MSN messenger at bbitmaster@hotmail.com

In any case, I'm really looking foward to this.

Thanks Drag, finding bugs like that is what beta testers are for. That is why this can not be rushed.

Anyway, progress has been slow as I'm in school now and I have to devote my time to a higher education.

And yes, I did spend a few hours the other day and thew together a name table viewer. Of course its slow right now, I haven't even began to optimize it, but other than that, I've done a few little fixes/enhanchments in the past few weeks.

I really do appreciate all the support though, this does really help motivate me to keep going.

All I can say is it will be ready when its ready :-)

Assuming you don't have any backups or aren't able to fix this. I'd love to help out. My contact info is in my profile, so feel free to contact me over IM.

I may not be able to do anything untill the end of this week though. I have several time consuming things going on in school right now.

Bah, this really reminds me about Neptune.

I have a very nice working version that I made last year with a perfectly effecient recompressor that recompresses the data back better than the original game even had it compressed, but I sorta stopped working on it about a year ago.

The main reason Neptune isn't in a finished state with a public release that happened long ago is because of lack of interest. Nobody seemed interested enough to care. I figured it would end up like mega-edit 3 where no-one would ever use it, so I've kind of just lost interest myself.

I don't suppose you used FX3's editor to do this. His editor was extremely messy in recompressing and moving the levels (I've seen the source). And it had some very serious bugs. It probably already has currupted your rom. It will only be a matter of time before you notice if you haven't already. I find the very thought of anyone using that editor very disturbing.

While music or television are cool to have running while doing other things, I find it it extremely distracting while trying to concentrate on programming or hacking. I don't know how you guys stand it. It seems wierd to me, to have to be listening to something while hacking.

I tend to be a deep thinker though, and sometimes the slightest noise can make me lose track of everything.

While I'm doing other things that I do on my computer, such as organizing my huge collection of movies or something like that, I find it very relaxing to have music in the background.

I could understand someone saying "compression isn't very easy to work with," or "I have a hard time understanding this compression," or even "I'm a newbie and don't know any of this stuff," but whoever says compression isn't very hacker friendly has no concept of who a hacker truly is. If you can only do "hacker friendly" tasks, then you are not really a hacker.

I've dealt with several types of compression myself, and I will admit, it's not easy, but the whole point of hacking is overcoming these challenges. I'm glad they did use compression in these games, because without it most games could only hold a fraction of what they hold. But also, I actually enjoy the challenge of trying to defeat it, which is what hacking is truly about.

Actually, I had an even weirder idea about how a sort of rom hack evolution could occur.

I know this could never happen in the real world, but assume you have an infinite number of people to play a game who each have an infinite number of faulty copying devices which they will use to pass the game on to several friends. Each person passes the game on to his friend by making a copy, but the copying device isn't perfect and currupts 3 random bytes each time. To combat this, each person makes 5 copies of the game and the person that recieves them plays through each copy and takes the two games that work the best, and makes 5 more faulty copies of each, and passes it on to more friends.

Because they are constantly picking the best ones, it should weed out all of the ones that crash, or don't work.

After this goes on millions and millions of times, would we end up with a whole bunch of variations of this game? After billions, or even trillions of generations what would we end up with? There aren't a million bytes in most nes games to currupt. Would the game start getting better? Or would it gradually get worse and worse until we end up with an extremely glitched up game?

Will we ever know?

gee, I do have the strangest ideas.

I suggest you change "editors" to "hacking utilities" so I can nominate FCEUXD as a hacking utility.

If not, then I nominate it as an editor, because technically it will be able to edit roms with the built in hex editor.

It will be released on Dec 25th, and I honestly don't think voting should start untill after that, because how can anyone vote on somethign that isn't out yet?

I agree as well that voting shouldn't start untill january 1st, 2005.

CF, I understand that you might be reluctant to break from tradition if this is how its been for the last several years, but I ask that you seriously consider it. Something really nice could get released on Dec 31st.

FCEUXD isn't something that can be defined in a few words, certainly not in a screenshot.
FCEUXD is a whole experience in itself.
Be ready to experience it soon.

Wow, thanks Para, and DD, and everyone else. All I can say is that I'm speechless at all of the support I've recieved for working on this.

I'm in the process of finishing up a few things, which is seeming to be the hardest part - I really hope I can deliver a complete version by christmas.

And to answer your questions:

Alexa: Yes, It might be a bit slow to use more than one feature at a time on a PC that is slower than... I'd estimate 900MHZ. I have really worked hard writing really neat code to optimize everything. The name table viewer (yes! you heard that right, it'll have a name table viewer!) takes up a fraction of the CPU usage it once took, as does the hex editor. I could have optimized para's ppu viewer a lot more, but it doesn't look like that will get done before the release.

Heian-794: If the original FCEU supports the bases loaded mapper (and I'm sure it does - it works with almost everything), then FCEUXD should work great with it. And you'll be able to view a lot more than palettes.

Kitten Yiffer: Sorry, there are no plans for a tile editor. I thought about it, but decided it'd take too much work at this time. The source code will be released, so if anyone else wants to add anything like that, they are welcome to do so.

BMF: This is based on the 97.5 release of FCEU. I still am thinking about trying to port it to the latest release later on.

All I can say is good luck, I've been planning on doing this with the nes for the past 2+ years, although I've got sidetracked

I still want to accomplish this with FCEUXD, but it will still take quite a bit of work.

I have considered doing a snes debugger like this, and after looking over the source, I know it's certainly possible. I just haven't decided if I want to put forth the effort. There are just too many other things I'd like to do after I finish with this.

Posted on 12-18-04 07:32 AM, in Who wants NES Game Genie Codes? Link
First of all, I apologize if someone doesn't think this belongs in the rom hacking forum. I believe it does though, because it is hacking, and it does require the rom.

Recently, me and dahrkdaiz have been making all kinds of awesome game genie codes using a recently added feature in FCEUXD. It is fairly easy to make almost any codes.

I am making this thread because we absolutely love making these codes, and want to fulfill code requests. So, I ask anyone who wants a specific code for a specific nes game to respond.

We have a few rules about the requests:
1. We won't make codes for any RPG games such as FF1 or DW, or sports games. Don't ask for those.

2. Er, hmm... how can I say this? Don't ask for something really obscure. For example, I had someone ask me to make a code to fix some bug at the last boss in the legacy of the wizard. First, I'd have a very hard time getting to the end of the game, let alone triggering the bug, even if it was described in detail.

3. Taking your request is completely up to us. Don't expect us to do it if we don't want to. This means we may be making new rules in the future.

I'm going to be working 8 hours a day for the next 4 days, add to that working on finishing FCEUXD. So I may be slow at getting back to this. Don't worry, I haven't abandoned it, just keep posting more requests. Dahrkdaiz is also going to be helping out, so that should help offset my absence. He mostly does SMB3 codes, and I'm sure he'd love requests for that game.

Also, if you aren't sure if something can be done in 3 codes, post the request anyway. Unless it is something really crazy like "add darth vader to the end of SMB3" we might surprise you.

Moving on, Here are a few random codes I made out of fun, and by request in #rom-hacking

Note that some of these codes such as Infinite lives may have already existed, I didn't even check to see. and I am still lazy to check, so here they are anyway.
