Secret of Mana has a hack that fixes the text to be more understandable. You could try downloading that. It's at Zophars domain.

So far the only level with background graphics I found needed changing so far was the city. I've been trying to change the setting to more of a construction type layout ala Donkey Kong. I'm not sure if I'm satisfied with this level tho. Tell me what you think.

Ok, I think I found what works. I put some buildings in the background instead of the fence. I also recolored the bricks.

Asatanyx is a sidescrolling game with some of the coolest cutscenes you will see in a NES game. It was kinda hard tho and I could never beat it without the cheat codes. Good looking hack tho.

I'm not sure where he got the sprite for yoshi, but it looks fine. It looks a little to good to be original, but it could be. I know he drew the shyguys when you step on them. He did a good job with that.

All the bosses sprites has been changed. Enemies as well. Here's an example. I wasn't able to fit bowsers sprite in the game. So instead I edited the final boss to appear Dennis Hopperish. After all, he did play bowser in the SMB Movie. Like it or love it I plan to leave it that way.

They were gonna release more cards in usa but for some reason decided not to.

There are a couple codes that make the levels a bit more fun. One is a code that will make plants that you can pick up and throw in most the levels. Another one is a powerup where your fireballs will turn enemies into coins.

Ya, definately a nice hack. Are you gonnna include a shell that reflects off walls? I heard someone else made a hack where the shells would do that. I never seen the hack tho and think it would be pretty cool.

You will aslo need a table maker, to use with the Hex editor. I use Tag. Read this thru to learn how to make the tables. It isn't too hard really.

Well, I do like the spritework for the zombie but the coloring doesn't seem very SOTNlike. U know zombies are supposed to have green skin right? The grass pattern underneath the Zombie is pretty sweet tho.

Here's how I see it. This is one of the more advanced SMB hacks I've ever seen, but it's definately nowhere near one of the best. As far as I'm concerned, this kind of shows that a lot of ASM changes and stuff don't make a hack great. I just get the feeling that not an amazing amount of time was put into level design, but it's still a pretty good hack none the less.

Another testimony to why level editors are neccesary. Knowing ASM doesn't mean you are a great level designer. But there can be great level designers out there that don't konw asm.

Exactly how long did it take for them to accept your submission? I sent them a link to mySuper Mario Land hack a couple weeks ago but so far the only hack they have put up in that time was a translation hack for Star wars. I made the hack with intentions of getting it up on Zophars domain so am kinda getting mad they aint put it up yet. If they don't wanna put it up they could at least let me know.

It would be strange if the game were never fixed as the Zelda fanbase is pretty large. I think it would be pretty cool to see it finished.

I don't think that anyone would have a problem with a green medusa right? Well, its your choice anyway, the spritework is looking pretty good.

Editing text in a hex editor is easier than you would think. You just got to make the right table. It's easy to find what digits you got to use for the letters with Nesticle. Then when you have the table made you just got to use the search feature to find the text you want to change.

I wish Nesticle wasn't the only emulator powerful enough to get you the right digits for a table. Mainly because it is full screen. It would be better if it was windowed.

Posted on 03-24-05 02:53 AM, in Best Emulators for use in hacking Link
How about we make a sticky thread describing which emulators are best for hacking the various systems. Um, I'll start.

Best Emulators

NES:
Nesticle (Supports real time graphics editing, full screen only)
Loopy NES

Gameboy Advance:
NO$GBA (More Powerful Debug Tools)
Visual Boy Advance (Less Powerful Debug Tools)

Gameboy (Original):
NO$GMB (Buggy, but has a familiar interface)
BGB (Good emulator with similar debug options to No$GMB)

Genesis:
DebugGens
Dgen
Kega Fusion (Awesome but less featured)

-----------------------------------------

Other Emultors
NES:
FCEUXD (Good Emulation with many debugging options and offers a windowed mode)

Genesis:
Genecyst (a great emulator in its time, and the first with debugging. DOES NOT work with Windows XP)

Well, The only idea I could come up with for replacing furball was to do a sprite edit. So I give you Hyabasu Mario.

Well, I was hoping for reflecting Turtle Shells. Also, why not have a multi use Pow Block. Probably like the one in SMAdvance. There is a gamegenie code that lets you use the Pow Infinitely so I imagine it would be possible.

Anyone else having problems with the patch? My game stopped working after putting the patch on it. I was using version 1.1 I believe.
