Ok, it looks as if people arent too interested in building caves. Not a problem. Caves make up very little of the game, and im sure we can handle it, but the more people who make caves, the more diverse the style which is always prefered.

If anyone wants to submit one without posting a pic(cant think of a reason why, but), you can send me a PM, or an e-mail at Omega45889@gmail.com with either a pic, a IPS patch, or the rom.

Thx.

The caves are relativly simple, cause you can really build em without any planning. There really arent any complex puzzles that can go in caves, which takes most of the thinking out of it. The designes can develop on their own as you shape the cave.

A word of advice, i have found it best to do tedious work with somethin in the backround. Music is ok, but somethin you can concentrate on is better like a movie, or a game that doesnt require much attention to be a part of like online poker for example.

Oh, i completely agree... corruption is more or less trial and error, and i have never relied upon corruption to find data, but back when i was a noob, i tried to use the different corrupters out there, and they were all shit that never worked, and crashed randomly. I can spend like 3-4 hours and code a simple and reliable corrupter for the noob hackers out there. Ive spent like an hour on it, and its starting to shape up. Besides, i just came up with the idea this morning.

I am going to have to go through that SMRPG data in detail before i begin, but i have a relativly good idea about what im gonna do. I dont believe there is quite enough data to make an editor, but there is enough to get the GUI going, editing levels and such. After ive got that, its a simple matter of expanding arrays, ect and adding new features as more stuff gets documented.

I just have one question. I have never dealt with compression in detail before, I have an idea of how it works, but nowhere near enough knowlege to decompress the gfx and read them directly from the ROM. I plan to do this, but i need someone to help me out with the compression. I know that Lunar Compress supports the SMRPG format, which I intend to just rip and use in my editor. Can someone supply me withe the areas of compressed gfx? Im not a data guy, and im too busy to bother finding it right now.

It is very useful for small chunks of code. Much easier to use than a tracer in certain circumstances.

Looks very cool, origional (at least to my SMW hacking experience), and seems to have well thought out level ideas. If released at a decent rom size, ill make a cartridge out of it to play on my snes. I dont think ill be playing it on a computer as that has lost its novelty for me.

Looks boring, uninspired, and irritating to play. I know im being brutally honest, but please, there are so many hacks already. You have to do something special to have something cool and origional... not just add a few hard jumps in.

Your telling me that no new good hacks have been released since that thread was last edited? Like 2/3 of the links there are broken, and I started by checking there.

That might not be a bad option for me with Dark Prophecy. I may get back to you on that.

On a side note, i have another hack that is unrelated to Dark Prophecy that is extremely close for release. It is currently being beta tested. I might contact you about hosting that if no hacking sites express interest.

I would really like to see what you have made. If you get it uploaded, either post a link, or PM me it. If you need help hosting it, my aim is: d3tl4

As for your problem, Dudeman is right, its the headers. Room headers are handled very poorly in HM, which makes it frustrating sometimes.

You would probably have to use a tracer and look at how it loads menu's.

WOW, its gotten to the point where we praise someone for using png's? For the love of god people, get broadband. Now, i dont like BMP's more than anyone else, but really, i have had BB for 10 years now.

As for the hack, the dungeons have only been remixed? As nice as that is, origional dungeons are much better. Although they take FOREVER to make. Good work nonetheless.

Well, the info is defnintly building up for this game. I never planned to put an event editor into my editor, but if it were well documented, i dont see why not.

Posted on 08-13-05 03:18 PM, in I'm starting to learn how to use a hex editor the right way, but I have 2 questions. Link
1) Of course there is a way to change pallets with a hex editor. You just need to find the right offset(s) and how to change them. Judging by your current skill, its probably easier to just do it how you are currently doing it. Keep learning though.

2) Yeah, there are probably some good resources for stuff like this. Check the SMW hacking boards. As for cool effects, those are usually done through assembly which is probably far beyond your current ability. There are some good basic tutorials out there that walk you through it which you would probably find very informative. I dont have a link, but again, check the SMW boards.

Good luck.
