I want to make one, and I were I to, I would hack AI and stats... all that shit. Especially since i am learning about assembly right now, it wouldnt be too big of a stretch. I might consider doing one after i finish Dark Prophecy, but as of right now, sry i dont know of any other good mario kart hacks.

*Ahem* SoM hasnt been announced. Oh well... if you get around to editing your post in time we can keep it that way, if not then its all good.

Btw, when you said redoing, i took it as a complete redo isntead of a rework. Lookin great though.

An update on DP. Last dungeon has been completed. Its in the testing phase as we speak.

Youll have to send me an updated version sometime. I also want your opinion on the new gfx, so well talk sometime. As for copying the overworlds over, that was the origional plan, but with some of the wierd corruption that has happened as a result of all the changes made to the dungeon rom, it would be a little complicated. There is still a lot to do, so we dont have to combine them together immediatly. I am really hoping to use the dungeon porter, and it looks like its going to work given some time.

Were a decent editor to come out, i would definitly make a several level hack if not an entire game hack. I think it would be awesome to have an editor for it, however unlikely.

Yeah, it may not make sense from a physical point of view, but Nintendo designed the walls with gameplay in mind. Just think how hard it would be to find the doors and such with that wall shown the way it should be.

BTW, i have some great news. ALL THE DUNGEONS ARE 100% complete... The last one has been completely debugged as of today.

Me and Jigglysaint are making the SoulBlazer editor. I am writing it while JS is finding the data. Anyone who wants to help out is welcome, but i dont expect to have much progress anytime soon simply cause i am soooo busy with stuff, and just recently i lost 3 really close friends in a car crash which also put my best friend in the hospital with brain damage. I need to deal with all this stuff before i can do any major hacking.

SoulBlazer is an awesome game, and i have wanted an editor for a long time, so i decided that given the data, i would write the one. The same goes for these other games. Given data, i will gladly write an editor.

Super Mario RPG
E.V.O. Search for Eden
Super Mario Kart (I want to write a good editor that is easily usable)

Thx for your thoughts. And yeah, i would love to write an EVO editor. Im just too damn lazy to find all the data. You should think about finding it so that we can make a cool hack out of it.

Indeed, the music will make it in if all goes well. Its sounding really great and origional.

We are on the home stretch, and i hope to have it out before the summer is up. There is still a lot left to do because of the music, gfx, and asm, but its looking great.

I am looking for a couple beta testers to test out some work this weekend. Shouldnt take more than 4-5 hours to do it. The testing has to be done this weekend, so dont sign up if your not free. Its gonna be cool, but im searching for errors so dont expect it to be perfectly smooth. Youll be required to play through certain sections of the game and record errors you find with a screenshot of the area of each error if possible and a text document detailing them. Only serious testers please. Sign up here, or PM me.

Note: This is not for Dark Prophecy. You will also need to take an oath to not reveal the project until release.

THX.

Well, as nice as gfx hacks are, i find them to be without substance which leads to quick bordom. What we need is a level editor for this game so that we can come up with some cool stuff.

I think the first step to creating an editor is documenting the level data compression routine. Once that is done, we can all start finding data, and eventually compile enough of it to create a viable editor. I am going to give it a try as soon as i finish my current project, but im not very optimistic about my abilities to figure it out.

Whos gonna step up?

Haha, i am indeed hoping for an end of summer release. Especially with dudeman getting off of school soon, we will have much more time to work on it. In the final stage, communication is critical. We will need to put together both the overworld and dungeons in the correct fashion, and while that may not seem to complicated, just think how many entrances/exits there are, and they all must fit together perfectly.

Allow me to clarify. ANYTHING is fair game. You can do whatever you wish... but if you start throwing major items around in it, im pretty sure it wont be used. The entrances can be wherever you like, you can assume that the player has all the items, you can fall from a hole in the overworld, you can have dialogue... ect. Perhaps even give away a heart piece for completing the puzzle.

Also, the size of the cave is also up to you. You can use the entire room as layout 7 (one big room), or as a smaller room... Be creative, but keep in mind that some limitations may require it to be slightly modified for it to work well in the game.

It doesnt even have to look like a cave, you could use the house blockset, or maybe make it an ice or fire cavern... I say again, it is COMPLETELY up to you. Be creative, and enjoy making it. We may use more than one if we like them, so if you see a great cave made my someone else, dont give up, try anyways.

People are welcome to submit pictures of partially complete caves to showcase it. Feel free to ask for help if you run into a problem. Most glitches can be solved by using a different object. And, look at the origional for reference as how to make things work.

Also, I request that you test your cave to make sure that it works properly before submitting.

Thx.

Posted on 07-11-05 02:14 PM, in Learning how to edit hex... Link
Umm, well, just today, i have gained an immense ammount of knowlege concerning programming, debugging, and assembly. Now, its all computer based knowlege, but its applicable to SNES in a more basic meathod. I think i have a much better grasp of the techniques used in rom hacking. I would strongly suggest reading some documents on HEX, getting that down pat, then learn about pointers and arrays (you probably should read some tutorials on the PC language "C" for this knowlege). It will be very confusing at first, but the satisfaction you will get out of it is huge. Ill consider writing you up a nice tutorial, faq, or getting you some good links sometime tomorrow.

You need to realize that it wont come easy. Its gonna take a lot of concentration, but if you have dedication, you will start to catch on really quickly.

If you have questions, feel free to PM me, or make a post. There are users such as Euclid, or MathonNapkins especially who are extremely talented who can explain stuff to you.

Good luck.

Edit: If your goal is not to learn, but to accomplish one task, then you could try the to use the trial and error meathods people have described. They arent the most time efficient, but they are the simplest, and require almost no previous knowledge or experience.

Also, i intend to write a corrupter of my own to replace the utter crap that is available right now. Ill probably write it in the next few days, and release it when im done.

Posted on 07-11-05 02:35 PM, in Which Hex Editor works best for me? Link
Some older programs just wont work with XP... you might be able to get it working using compatiblity (make a shortcut on the desktop, open its properties dialogue and go to the compatibility tab). Ive gotten some programs to work like that. Its not perfect though.

As for a good Hex editor, Hex Workshop is by far my favourite. I was really pissed when my trial ran out and i had to go back to using a much older version. Even the old version is good though. I really need to get around to cracking/buying my new version (depending on my lazyness).
