.SAV files are made by the emulators to save what would normally be stored in a cartridge's battery-backed RAM, AKA Save-RAM. Imagine you have a file "PokeBlue.GB". You play the game and save it. Notice you'll soon see a file "PokeBlue.SAV". That's the one the editor wants.
