Well, good news and slightly bad news.

1) I found somewhere to live. It's a share house, with two medical students. They seem like really fun people, I got along with them very well at the interview/inspection and I'm looking forward to moving in.

2) The bad news is, that's 10 days away, so I'm stuck.... I spoke to my mother, and I'll go there for 10 days, but I'm guessing she'll drive me insane in that time. Ugh.

So, all good.. if I'm crazy in 10 days time though, blame the mother.

Posted on 09-06-04 02:30 PM, in Your Hardware Wishlist :) Link
Thought I'd post something fun in here.... we frequently troubleshoot Wintel boxes around these here parts, so I thought I'd try something different.

What hardware are you itching for at the moment? What is it that you really *want* to have... need to have.. just HAVE to have? You can be as specific or generic as you like in your descriptions.

My hardware wishlist goes a little like this:

* USB thumb disk. Preferably around the 256Mb range. Not too fussy about this, just want something reliable.
* A Digital Camera. Again, not too fussy about this, just something to take my happy snaps with.
* An iSight
* An iMac G5
* The Mouse from MacMice.
* A faster processor for my P4.... and a video card... and most likely a motherboard and RAM while I'm at it, I'm guessing...
* A bigger Hard Drive. Too much storage is never enough.
* One day, a Toshiba Libretto would be kinda cool And with that, a decent PCMCIA Wireless Card.... Senao one maybe
* A big directional wifi antenna fashioned by my adorable Ben-Ben mounted to the roof of my new home, beaming high speed wireless internet... mmm.... wireless.... *drool*

What kinda stuff do you guys want? What is on your wish list?

Oooh, I likes the looks of the buildings and stuffs, it looks purty And it's nice living near the beach, even when it's cold. I like watching the surf coming in when it's stormy; watching all the waves come in all choppy and wild!

This is my home town, according the local council. They make it sound better than it really is

It's a coastal city too, but I don't currently live near the beach. My Mum does though....

I can sit on a skateboard and wheel myself about with my hands, that doesn't count though, does it?

Eh, I am not a skater. I am a "surfie" (note: surfIE not surfER, my surfing is poor, I do surf lifesaving not boardriding).

I also like electric scooters. They are fun to whiz about the city on.

I don't like Clowns, and I don't like those porcelain harlequin dolls either. The harlequin dolls freak me out more than the clowns do.

Clowns on TV don't scare me or anything, it's clowns in real life that I don't like. It's not fear... it's that they make me feel awkward... so do people dressed up as mascots for that matter, in animal suits and such. I just feel... silly standing even near them.

Ditto for people dressed as Santa.

But I actually *am* crazy. Well, clinically depressed and suffering an anxiety disorder anyways. I hope that when you say "crazy" you mean people that are psychotically ill, not people like me that are more neurotic than anything.

But with the clowns, it's not so much fear, but kinda like a heightened social phobia. I have enough of a general fear of people, let alone those that are dressed strangely, act strangely and attract attention. Having attention drawn to me makes me nervous, and having an unpredictable looney in my face makes me nervous too.

The harlequin dolls still freak me out though. Normal dolls are okay, but the harlequin ones are weird.

I'm planning on losing weight, I just have to stop eating unhealthy stuff first.

I've gained so much weight since I've been on certain medications, it's not fun. Apparently it's partly a side effect of the medication itself, and partly a behavioural change... grr...

I dyed my hair bright colors back in high school. It was fun having blue hair and then pink hair. I didn't do it for shock value or any thing like that, like some of the kids I know did.... I did it because I was amused by my hair being a different color.

Now if I think about dying my hair, I go for natural colors. I still get the same kick out of it, to tell the truth. I wanna be a redhead Just a kinda strawberry blonde...

Well, for those of you using IE, and considering a move, here are (what I percieve to be) the biggest benefits:

* LESS SPYWARE: Firefox/Mozilla don't use the ActiveX technology, which is the technology in Internet Explorer that most spyware/adware uses to get onto your computer. Simply not having ActiveX means you don't get as much spyware!

* SECURITY FEATURES: As well as having no ActiveX features, Firefox has additional security features, including Cookie blocking, to further protect you against spyware and other nasties.

* POP UP BLOCKING: All Mozilla programs have Pop Up Blocking on by default

* TABBED BROWSING: Instead of opening new windows for links, you can open things in Tabs. One advantage of Tabs is that they load in the background while you continue reading the page you are on -- so when you are ready to read the page you have opened in a Tab, it is already loaded

* CUSTOMISABLE: With extensions, Firefox is as customisable as you like. There are additional security extensions that can block out banner advertising, for example, or others that customise the way your menus look.

There are tons of other features, but these are the ones that I find the most useful. Particularly the spyware killing ones. I don't like having ads and other nasties shoved in my face every time I go to a website.

Security's the biggest advantage of Firefox IMHO. Security alone makes the download of Firefox well worth it. Then you get other spiffy features as well, like Find-As-You-Type! WEEE

I love my Firefox.

Posted on 09-15-04 07:40 AM, in Talk about one of the worst days of your life. Link
You guys are so going to regret posting this thread.

I have TWO days I could call "worst" days of my life.

The first is the day my father died. My father was sick my whole life, and I had heard him whisper to Mum only days before that he thought he was going to die. I know that I wasn't meant to hear him say it either, and I know my brother never heard it, so I didn't tell him.

Days later, I was told at school that my mother had gone home from work sick. I distinctly remember where I was -- I was waiting for Drama class, and I was waiting outside the drama space. I also remember who told me, it was Ms Linke. I thought it was unusual, because my mother was never, ever sick, but I pretty much shrugged it off.

I walked home from school that day, alone. My brother had left before me, so I hadn't caught up with him. It was a pretty sunny day, the weather was mild and pleasant.

For some reason, I went to the front door that day, and I knocked.

Mum opened the front door, and I could tell immediately that something was not right. For starters, she did not look remotely ill.

She told me, pretty bluntly, that my father had passed away. I don't remember what my reaction was, I think I may have called her a liar, but my first reaction was most definitely one of denial. I didnt' cry, I didn't do anything.

I found myself at Dad's desk moments after, and I saw his watch -- which he always wore -- on the desk, along with some other things of his. I think that's when it kinda sunk in, and that's when I began to cry.

After that, we went to the hospital, because Mum wanted us to say goodbye to Dad. We went to the room in the hospital where he'd been, and I saw him, lying there. I didn't want to look. I stared out of the window, and watched the birds flying over the university oval. When provoked by Mum, I pulled myself away from the window, but only stared at the ceiling and the mirror in the room.

Then we went to my Nanna's, where I was greeted by my Nanna and Grandpa, who hugged me and we cried. We all cried together for pretty much the rest of the day.

We returned home late, and I decided to call my best friend, Kathryn, to let her know I wouldn't be at school the next day. I didn't know what to say to her or how though, so I told her really badly, simply saying that my dad was dead. Mum told me off for saying it so harshly, but I was only 14, I didn't know how else to say it.

I think I cried myself to sleep.

That was one of the worst days of my life. There are others, but you don't want to hear it. Trust me.

Version 1.0 is expected to be released in a month and will be the first non Preview release of Firefox, AFAIK.

All versions up till now have been Technology Previews (note: not beta) but have been for the most part very stable. I wouldn't say that they were "beta" versions of software... that's more the nightly builds that fit that category... each release of Firefox has been a fairly polished technology preview.

Now they must be getting close to giving it the 1.0 number and releasing it as a full fledged product. I look forward to it.

The worst day of me life was when I found out my dad was cheating on my mom.
It happened when he went away for three months.("on military duty")
Not suprizing? It would be to you if your dad acted perfect all the time. And 'pretened' everything was okay.
At the time I thought he was telling the truth. But I guess, no one's perfect. Even if they seem to do a pretty good job at it.

I have evidence that has made me think that my mother cheated on my father while he was in hospital, before he died. I have never confronted her about it, but when I look back on things, it now seems so obvious.... the way I was never allowed to talk about her "friend" that came over and took us out to dinner and places and stuff. And then the fact that they officially dated after my father died too.

I don't see the point in confronting her about it either, I guess.... it's in the past, and me going over it is just going to drag up a shitload of bad feelings and unnecessary anger. I see no benefit to bringing it up with her, so I won't.

I used to be a huge fan of Opera, but I haven't liked their recent versions, wheras I've really enjoyed using Firefox. That's why I switched

But Opera isn't quite the same thing as Firefox. Opera has *tons* of features, wheras Firefox is meant to be a relatively slimline browser -- so you only install the features you need. Both are incredibly customisable though

As for cracking Opera -- don't do it. I may not use Opera anymore, but I want them to be supported....

I have Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels on DVD. It was one of the first DVD's I bought, because I remember enjoying the film when I first saw it (when it came out).

I've seen Snatch too, but I enjoyed Lock Stock a whole lot more. Although admittedly, the dialect is a little hard to pick up on the first time you see it

And yeah, the ending is great

I heard about the changes on Slashdot back a few weeks ago, and that's why I've stayed away from the DVDs. I like the original, the way it was ORIGINALLY done. I too was peeved with the change at the end with Anakin's ghost.

Thankfully, Ben picked up the Star Wars trilogy a few years back, on DVD. He picked it up in Malaysia, so of course, it's not "official" -- but it's very good and the best part is, it's the ORIGINAL trilogy, unaltered.
