Which Sonic looks better? Oh, and I also changed the Icon for Sonic on the HP bar.
Looks nice.

Its hard to say. They both look good. Well, for the Sonic avatar, I would keep the one in the first pic. Its consistant with the rest of them, as they are all looking straight ahead also. As for Sonic himself, I don't know. Wait to get more opinions, or flip a coin.

Looks cool. I don't know how different Super Mario Bros. 3 and Tiny Toons game engines are, but if Tiny Toons is similar, with a little bit of ASM hacking, you could definately warp this game into a Mario game. Maybe you could be the first to do something like that! Anyway, I'll give it a try soon. Good job.

Who here likes betas of videogames? I do!

Betas are awesome. After playing that original game for so long, becoming a fan, conquering everything, and knowing how the game engine works inside out, looking at a beta can be very interesting. However, I'm mostly into betas of the past gaming consoles, because thats when games were games. Besides being obsessed with the never-released Resident Evil game, Resident Evil 1.5, its nice to see beta pictures of Mario and Zelda games too. Betas are cool because they show things that could of been, but weren't, and sometimes you wish that you could play the game with those beta elements, and even wish they were in the final release. Its because you like what you have played, and you want more of the same. ClassicGaming.com is a cool site. Yesterday, I was looking at the Super Mario Bros. 3 beta pictures. I'm going to continue looking for pictures and info of videogame betas, because its really cool stuff!

The past couple days, I lost all motivation for my SMB3 hack: Race Against Time. Sometimes it happens like that, then I eventually get it back. But, I need help if I'm going to get this hack out by the end of the year. Its a lot of work to do a big project. I want a complete hack, levels, graphics, palettes, ASM hacks, etc. Is there anyone, who is good at Super Mario Bros. 3 hacking, want to help me? I am going to be moving at the end of this week, so I won't be online for a couple weeks. Also, I have a lot of plans. I just feel hopeless right now. I could use some help, or any advice you can give me.

I'm looking for high quality, yet something thats fun and people will want to play. Any help I can get would be greatly appreciated. You get credit for all your work, and remember, this hack is for the people to enjoy. Thats why I'm working on it. Thanks.

I don't know what you mean... I was thinking about just letting somebody else take over the project, but I figure I would ask for help first. Some people are interested in the hack. I don't want to see my work go to waste.

I still didn't get a chance to play the demo yet! I just got back online from the whole moving ordeal, so soon I'll have the time to play it. Congratulations on the hard work.

When I tried patching it before, I thought it was the ROM I was using that messed things up. But you fixed it, so its all good.

I just got done playing it. Its pretty good. I like the levels, and the graphics. Its got originality in it. Nice idea to use that football-enemy as Boom Boom. You also motivated me a little bit to continue working on my projects. So thank you, and good work.

Posted on 04-07-05 03:52 AM, in ASM Hacking Question - Controller Presses Link
In the past, there have been some ASM hacks I wanted to do, which I could've done if I knew how to work with the controller presses.

I know it has something to do with $4016, or something like that. For example, the select button in Super Mario Bros. 3 doesn't really have a purpose. As practice, I want to try to see if I can make the select button make Mario Tanooki Mario for example.

How do I go about doing this? Writing a breakpoint to the controller address I have done, just halts the game.

I also wanted to do an ASM hack to Zelda, in which if you hold down the select button, Link can run faster. Any help would be great. Thanks.

I figured out how it works! You guys are the best!

Thanks plenty.

I'm still in practicing mode. As practice, I made it so when Mario jumps, he turns into Raccoon Mario. I'm working on making that happen with the select button.

I found this information while practicing ASM hacks with the button presses.

Mario Jumping Routine (applies to every form... big, small, raccoon, etc.)

$AC78:AD 47 A6 LDA $A647 = #$C8
$AC7B:38 SEC
$AC7C:FD 48 A6 SBC $A648,X @ $A648 = #$00
$AC7F:85 CF STA $CF = #$00

0x010658 Jump Height. The higher the value, the higher Mario jumps. This does not apply for when Mario moves and jumps. Just standing jumps.

I felt a little stupid yesterday too, after I found out that it wasn't really that hard to begin with, and I can't believe that I didn't pick it up before.

Ah nice. If only I had looked a little bit more at the RAM. I noticed similar things when I was finding data for SMB2; that data can be right next to each other.

Now I never got too far into the original Metroid, or Super Metroid, so I don't really know how the story goes, or what enemies there are, etc. So, I'm not really a Metroid fan, but this game looks really good. A COMPLETE HACK! That's what I'm talking about. Levels, graphics, story, features. Very nice! Good job man. I will definately be playing this.

Okay, now I'm having a little bit of trouble. I'm trying to write my own code for SMB3, so when you press the select button, it increases your lives by one. This, I'm doing for practice.

What I'm doing, setting a breakpoint of read, to $18. Then, I press run to get to the section that has the NOP'd out code. That is where I'm putting my code.

A5 18
29 20
F0 00
EE 36 07

Those are the bytes above.

The actual code:

LDA $18
AND #$20
BEQ [next line]
INC $736

I looked at the RAM in the memory viewer. When you press select, the number 20 comes up. Meaning, that the number 20 means select.

So, I looked at code I saw for the jump button, and I tried to write my own. But its not working correctly.

Instead of select, it increase the lives by about 20 when you press the Start button. Its weird.

You were right Disch. Thanks. My Branch wasn't correct, and the code section with the NOPs was the pause screen. I noticed that in the RAM viewer, pressing the start button shows up as 10, and the code shown there was AND #$10, meaning that pressing start executed the code for the pause. So, I now know what I was doing wrong, however, even with the proper code I have, I couldn't find free space within the limits to put the code, so I had to go over the Pause routine.

I'll have to figure out where to find some free space to my new code tomorrow. There is lots of free space in the ROM, but it has to be within that area, or it won't work. I have tried many times.

So, I managed to do what I wanted to do, initially as practice.

Press select...

And Tanooki Mario you become!

http://www.geocities.com/heavencloud7777/smb3.zip

I even made a patch if anyone wants to try it out. Remember, until I figure out how to do it a better way, you can't pause in the game. But the ASM hack works perfectly fine.

You need to right click and select save target as if you want to download it.
