Posted on 07-11-05 04:08 PM, in Any convenient way to rip Playstation "sprites" ? Link
Thanks for your anwers. The cropping tool from ASP truly is a god-like feature, yes
I use that only when ripping SNES sprites, because, as already stated, you can reduce the image size to the actual sprie(s) you want to have ripped, but when it comes to PS emulation, I rather crop the screens in PSP already than in ASP - due to the more work required, although I know the magic wand (that thingy is located within the selection tools, at the bottom), even if it might be basically only a little more work. It takes a lot more time than in ZSNES' screenshots, sure, but that way I can work more accurate.

I only define an actualy origin for the selection tool, like x = 100 and y = 90 for example, and then I note down the actual selection, like a height * width of e. g. 90 x 90 px. This will be applied to all screens then. ePSXe has a slight glitch of the 3-4 bottom or top lines disappearing and replacing with another part of the image, when taking several screenshots in a row in a window. You might already have run several times into that when playing in full-screen, pressing ESC or ALT + ENTER, then turning back into full-screen mode. The window status bar might appear then until the next frame is drawn (depends also on video plugin and refresh settings, I noticed that with Pete's Soft Driver 1.16 for example), like when you enter a game new in a new screen, enter battle mode or when you leave a map in the game.

It rarely requires replacing the images, or moving them one or two pixels in some frames. But other than else, I'm going like that way too.

Software what empties RAM is pretty useless. If you plan to use something like Adobe Photoshop CS 2, you can't have enough RAM and even with 1 GB of RAM it won't stop filling Windows' page file.
To empty your RAM, usually it is enough to clean the clipboard, like open up a text document, select a single character, copy it,done.
And about RAM usage it heavily depends on your computer and the operating system.
Windows usually requires at least twice as much RAM as stated in the system requirements to run smoothly. If you use Windows XP, MS states it needs at least 64 MB or RAM ... and also with 128 MB it won't run smoothly at all - unless you turn off all additional effects like menu animation and such.

If you have tons of start-up items in your bar, like iPodService.exe if you own that music player, the OpenOffice wizard which loads parts into RAM at system-start, third-party tools, StyleXP and such - don't wonder if your precious RAM is already used up then, even before you start some applications after logging into Windows.

You might also want to test your RAM. Bootable images for a disk can be downloaded from http://www.memtest86.com.
It is no failsafe since software can't detect physical RAM problems, but running it a few hours can greatly help if it still works in a good way or if it needs to be replaced.

Since an AcmlmBoard's PM system doesn't act like that in a phpBB-one, I doubt the sender will notice any difference.

In phpBBs PMs are stored in your outgoing messages folder until the recipient comes online to "receive" it, so there can be tracked if a message was deliviered or not. So, send a message to someone who comes not online for a long time - it will be still in your phpBB outgoing messages folder.

I think what might be good in this case: A "blocked users" sub-folder. This folder must not be deletable and the board checks then, when a message is sent, if the user is on the blacklist of the recipient. If it matches, the message is directly sent into that folder - also the flag "You have x new messages" should be set to off. Unless there arrive multiple messages at the same time from friends AND an ignored user, then this might cause problems, if the flag is removed but along with the normal PMs you won't notice you got any PMs.

If it's an older and/or a cheaper one, it mostly is worn out. If you can calibrate it and it works fine in Windows' game controller entry inside the Control Panel but a few moments later not more, it is the mechanics.

I have a Logitech Dual Action USB. It might be the best analogue pad for N64 emulation ... IF there were not that very low product life of it
I used it maybe three months, gone through Super Mario 64, F-Zero X, Paper Mario and far in Zelda - Ocarina of Time, then it doesn't work. Plug it out, connect it again - stick works for maybe five minutes, then only the left direction works again.

I popped it open and saw the petitiometers (warranty is gone, so know what you do), I used a screwdriver and pushed these two ones and applied some WD-40 on it - it worked several days without any problems before the next usage

Something what might help you in finding it, might be HiJack This. It shows all running processes and auto-start items. I recommend downloading this, putting it into a folder (the desktop is not recommended for it, since it wants to do backups when you want to fix something using HJT later).
http://216.180.233.162/~merijn/files/HijackThis.exe

Run it, press "Do a system scan and save a logfile", then copy all the contents from the opening Notepad window (hijackthis.log) and paste it into this thread. It may help us finding the problem.

Very often, malware writes itself into the registry or auto-start, so removing just helps until you reboot your machine

Platform: Windows XP SP1 (WinNT 5.01.2600)

You should install ServicePack 2 for XP. If you are afraid of your computer going mad: Mostly the machines already had problems before installing it. But it is really recommended to install it, since especially you are using Internet Explorer, at least some nasty security holes were closed

Some entries seem suspicious. Anya, do you have another toolbar than Google toolbar installed ?

These entries seem to be weird:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\kvfys.dll/sp.html#37049
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\kvfys.dll/sp.html#37049
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\kvfys.dll/sp.html#37049
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\kvfys.dll/sp.html#37049
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\kvfys.dll/sp.html#37049
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\kvfys.dll/sp.html#37049
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\kvfys.dll/sp.html#37049

Also that thing is not in place:

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O16 - DPF: {F5192746-22D6-41BD-9D2D-1E75D14FBD3C} - http://download.rfwnad.com/cab/crack.CAB

I doubt something using "crack" might be a positive entry, the missing URL SearchHook also might point to spy- or other malware installed

Windows' files is on another partition ?
You are stuck with a recovery version which just restores the original state; I think it overwrites simply all the contents on the hard disk.
Of course, You could ask the dealer/manufacturer if they could send you a normal installation disk, but often the vendors sell computers very cheap with these recovery OEM versions of Windows only.

It is more like a gift, recovery CDs and/or partitions are usually worthless (if you deleted your D:\ partition accidently, you couldn't install it anymore and whenever the system is messed up, you're stuck).
If you have a i386 folder on D:\. you can turn it into a normal XP installaton disk, but don't ask me about a tutorial, I only found German ones, but I am lacking the right keywords to bring up an English one.

Posted on 07-15-05 06:05 PM, in Jets'n'Guns - Kickass 2D shooter with an awesome soundtrack from Machinae Supremacy Link
A nice person I know from another board gave me a link to the homepage of Machinae Supremacy where to download the game's soundtrack legally - and it's definitively worth doing this.

Then I got interested in that game and found it here:
http://jng.rakeingrass.com/

It is basically something like Gradius, with better graphics, no smartbombs or satellites but really a huge selection of weapons (all except one or two can be upgraded in several levels), a lot of other gimmicks like different bombs, missles, a boss betector, a hunter's licence (you get more money for special marked enemies when you once got that licence), a cooling system to reduce the weapon's heat and more. And there finally is hacking tool which allows you to crack collected ammo - it's a little mastermind game, but usually you should be able to crack the code before you run out of tries.

As for the game - it simply provides a lot of fun.
Despite some boring backgrounds (unterwater level) the explosions, the detailled ships, some bigger bosses there is a lot of change, when it comes to levels.
About the gameplay ... well, it's basically "target-anything-moving-and-destroy-it!", so there may not be big change, but since nearly every weapon is somehow unique you might want to combine three different weapons in the front (you get later three weapon slots in the front and one in the back, along with one bomb and missile slot), there you can plan strategically what to put into these.
It's only 21 levels what might be not that much, since the levels are not that uber-long (but separated with check points; some enemies can be really nasty when playing on Veteran or even higher [finish the game and it starts over with an even higher difficulty]) - but on the other hand the 20 US dollars are spent good, due to the impressive soundtrack.
I never had so much fun in destroying everything, the "Hero" track in the special Machinae Supremacy level simply rocks, the level music from the first stage "Canvoolt" - no, they all simply rock like you never experienced in a shooter.
Requirement: If you don't like metal, you won't like that; everyone elese - get the soundtrack immediately!
As stated, it's for free to download from that URL - scroll to the bottom and click the last link:
Direct link to the soundtrack
It's about 75 MB, containing all tracks except "Hero" and the shop-track (two of the best tracks, sadly not in the OST but in the game only. You can download "Hero" and a lot of other tracks from Machinae from the band's homepage download section).
The game itself also contains all the sounds, but in a little lower quality than that soundtrack.
Screens can be found here.

As for me, that game really is a masterpiece of its work - can not even touch actual games by graphics, yes, but that 2D style, the huge explosions, tons of different levels and especially the great music make that the most entertaining 2D shooter I've ever played - and I only can recommend that game.

Posted on 07-15-05 06:28 PM, in What are you looking forward to this fall? Link
I'm looking to study about Japan this year. If I paraphrased it directly from the German name of that subject, it might be called "Japan studies" or "Japanology" in English. I'm 24 years old now, really time to get something done to advance in life ... as before I only had and have very nasty problems with(in) family and environment.

I'm really adored about that - languages anyway are very interesting; and I know Japanese has a very complex grammatical structure (if it comes to the different courtesy forms or the huge amount of Kanji, along with "only" about seventy symbols for Katakan and Hiragana each), but I'm very willing to do this and had this though since at least four years.

As for games:

I would like to have sequels from Valkyrie Profile, rumors say tri-Ace _might_ work on that, but there is no true proof - also if it becomes entirely 3D, it would lose a lot of its originality (side-scrolling dungeons in a RPG with jumping, beautiful drawn chars and enemies), also considering the battle system might be nice in 3D too if it got controlled like VP 1 already.

When Rake in Grass will release Jets'n'Guns 2, I also will get it, as long the system requirements might not be uber-high then
That is a low budget PC for about 400 Euros with a low-class video card (I usually need nothing special since I only emulate NES up to PSOne games) - that would be really nice.

Admins can read PMs (this is known), so they can check the amount of spam and might even delete that account, although it's their thing and I'm no staff member. I think this might also be an idea, like in another thread, to make PMs a right and not a feature; since it seems to be worse in your case with his PMs.

It could work similar like a custom title, except that it is enabled by default. If someone misuses that feature for spam, he/she might get that right removed - so the messages simply won't leave the sender - or the way to private.php is blocked.

Posted on 07-16-05 09:01 PM, in Do your parents take video game ratings seriously? Link
I'm 24 and think I should know myself what I play. My mother never cared too much about games, on the other hand I was already older.
About Doom64 ... that game made me sick, but not from the violence but from the camera swinging, which went up and down with every step. Couldn't go more further than level two (you may laugh, but really it was that way). I also wouldn't play a game if there was no option to turn the camera swings, no way.

About violent games, I never was really interested in these. Since I mostly play RPGs I didn't encounter them. I always preferred Street Fighter over Mortal Kombat, since the fatalaties even were boring for me.
On the other hand these scenes are more funny than serious; the most violent games I have are Jets N Guns (small pixel blood when you finish off floating humans), Diablo II and maybe Starcraft Broodwar - so really nothing compared to games like GTA and other ones.

If I had children I rather would talk to them about violent games, when they got interested in these. Forbidding these without any explanation might just make them even more curious to get the game - something forbidden; I could use the term "Pandora's Box" for that, except a violent game alone can't bring violence to person's minds as I think.

In no extreme causes, such as an eight year-old boy who got GTA, why should not the father maybe take time to play with his son a little more; maybe a two player duel via LAN ?

Now you have to install a plugin for MNGs manually, like that one. I tested it, despite its old distribution it even works in the current version of Firefox

I shredded a lot of (fortunately) cheap alarm clocks. Usually when I'm still tired, I smash my hand on the alarm clock and think "Shut up! I want to sleep!", after a few treatments like that I usually can trash it. That's also a reason I keep my alarm clocks (yes, with an "s", now I'm down to one only) far away on the desktop ... I actually _have_ to get up (and since the current radio alarm clock really makes an annoying noise when waking up - it gets me up ).

But I need usually two alarm clocks, one is my cell phone, it rings thirty minutes before I need to get up, what is implied by that alarm clock above.
