The formula is quite simple, since a user with more posts has more influence to someone than with a lower number of posts.
User level x 10 = maximum rating, so I can give up to 370 points just now to users, if I find her/him very good; but let's take someone with level 120 with her/his 1200 max. points

Nothing changed too much, I replaced that wallpaper once in four months and still are satisfied with that. I hate overcrowded desktops anyway, so I keep Desktop and Quick Launch containing not too many icons
Also time to get a new monitor so that I can use 1280 x 1024 pixels without blurring fonts here

Post your full HiJackThis! logfile in here. Maybe someone knows something about that or certain entries.
And as for removal instructions, did you try to run Spybot, Ad-Aware and your antivirus in safe mode instead of normal one ?
That might give you better chances, since some malicous programs might not be loaded along like some system drivers disabled in safe mode.

If you got an Ago- or Phatbot, it's even harder, since they are a combination of worm, trojan and virus parts. Removing these is hard, so if you got several trojans, I recommend to back up all your important files, killing all partitions by formatting tham, then installing Windows XP from scratch on, following the most common security advices (such as updating the OS, never going without a firewall into the Internet, avoiding IE etc.). As for Service Pack 2, if not installed, install it - or if you have a fast connection, download it and make your own slipstreamed Win XP SP2 CD. It is easy enough, I made my own one in a few minutes plus a little time for the burning process. As for that, I recommend to extract the Windows-CD's boot image file (Microsoft Corporation.img), since I lost 2 empty CDs with downloaded .bins - not bootable, thus useless ... until today when I "discovered" I needed my own CD's image file.

Posted on 01-04-05 05:41 PM, in There's something I just don't like about SP2. Link
It might be a driver conflict or incompatibility with SP2. Did you already try to reinstall your video card or chipset drivers ?
Be sure to take the right one, since a wrong driver can mess up the system fatally.

Also you could test your RAM. Sometimes BSoD can be caused by damaged RAM, try Memtest86 and run it for a few hours, if you still can access the Safe Mode without freezing the computer. Why SP2 should make a difference here, I dunno know. But since you already had some problems with your machine, it won't be that bad to try to find all possible 'sources of doom'

Although that's no true solution, it is hard to locate the problem. You said, you installed a bunch of programs. It also might be another hardware conflict with parts of your machine and updated system files or something similar.

I would recommend you to format _everything_, somehow to back up your anime etc., keeping all your neccessary drivers for chipset, video card and others ready, along with a fresh setup.exe of an up-to-date firewall plus antivirus which you install later on.
I even would recommend to create a slipstreamed CD with SP2 already included, since I applied my SP2 on a fresh copy of XP (immediately after installation of the system and missing drivers I put on that Service Pack offline from a CD and never had any problems with it then) and might have better ways to work for you, if you install all programs _after_ SP2.

Uninstalling SP is shown in the "Software" entry in the Control Panel, but won't help that much.

If you're using Win2k/XP, try a repair installation from the installation disk. Since you cannot make the drives appear, one or more system files might be damaged (Don't start the Recovery Console, go to Install XP, select Windows and press R for repair).
Make a backup beforehand, although it only deletes the system files and restores them in the installation process. You also will need your CD-key to verify the installation again, although Windows XP will remain activated.

(That helped me today, after a conversion of all four partitions from FAT32 to NTFS after that tutorial, since some things didn't went wright, such a very noisy and long boot-up time - now everything except System Restore is fine )

As for board staff, I'm not that active, but someone won't need to post often to moderate in a good way. For example you could have had your last post seven days ago, but you have closed ten threads without posting the comment, or simply editing the reason into the last post (I know, closed threads without an explanation are bad), so post counter alone =/= indicator of staff quality.

If someone is inactive for a month, the computer might be broken or holiday, but who was not there for more months, but is online in an instant messenger daily, should think about reatreating. Exceptions might be the admins. Do you would ban Acmlm if he wouldn't be active, let's say for about five months without a post?
It is at least his board, an example how a board can be run without a proper site (Acmlm's site wasn't updated in ages, due to lack of time).
Whatever, I won't vote for a full staff reorganization, but it should be discussed openly or in the restricted forum about each staff member - I rarely visit any other forum than Hardware, General Chat and Super Mario World Hacking, so can't tell

Posted on 01-20-05 05:51 PM, in How often do you backup your personal files? Link
Computers and large hard drives often store personal and valuable data. May it be your MP3s, image files from your last holiday on the beach or the large document you are working for your final test in school or university, whatever, it is not always safe to rely on a hard drive and operating systems where already small changes can cause huge damage (damaging important .dlls in Windows or viruses, bad hard drives etc.) alone.

So it is important to back up everything.
So the preaching hour is finally finished.

How often do you do this?
If you want, tell me also in which way to you do that?
So, like if you save your files onto another partition using imaging programs like Norton Ghost or TrueImage using the entire partition(s). Or do you only copy your MP3s, images and save states onto a CD/DVD since you later anyway reinstall Windows after a full format of all yoir hard drives?

As for me, I save every download in two folders locally (one for archives like ZIP, RAR and one folder for installer, like setup.exe for programs), these are located within the local My Files folder. Every two weeks I copy all contents plus all my RPG Maker games onto a DVD. so whenever I need to format my drive, I simply reinstall Windows XP (using a home-brewn slipstreamed CD inclusing SP2 - legally with my original disk) and then install all my programs and have my stuff on that DVD.

I do this every two weeks and this costs maybe half an hour in Nero plus checking all files.

How about you?

The idea is good, but I think an entire forum is oversized for that. You could also extend the rules for General Chat to post that. Why not?

Since there is a debate forum, anything more lightweighted coming to topics could simply go into General Chat imo - or a sticky thread might fit

As long as you are not using 640 x 480 pixels as your resolution, that small link/button might not be that huge target to hit accidently- if I would contribute a suggestion, that might be to increase the button's size (and that would be a joke then - it is fine how it is just now)..
But my Logitech Cordless Optical works great, so I never hit a button not supposed to hit

You could try out DeepBurner, freeware. It is one of the best freeware CD/DVD burning software available - or you just get Nero as Trapster mentioned about it.

As more or less stated, there is no democracy in a message board and virtually impossible (as least as it comes to usual communities, also this applies to that *unique* board).
On the other side, doing a local or higher mod job is just a waste of time mostly. You don't earn any money or respect (mostly; depends on the community too).
You might apply for the next job with "I was a local moderator on board xyz, plz take me, I'm skilled in leadership and make good decisions!!!11oneon")

Not everyone might be that active. As also said, you might not post in thirty days, but you might close twenty threads without any comment. As for me, I'm staffed somewhere else and I rarely close a thread without a finishing post (or at least inserting a "Edit by Surlent:<reason> in the final post), but that's not the topic here.

For FuSoYa, there apply similar roles like for Acmlm (although Ace simply works more, and this is just normal to value job over that board - and I'm NOT smooth-talking since I'm here since '02 )
He did create Lunar Magic and lurks more than he posts. Also BMF is more active. If he closes a thread, FuSoYa doesn't need to close same thread again. Of cousre there are more level editor creators, but there simply IS a SMW Hacking forum.

Concerning the post counter, I'll show an example. This won't be any advertisement, so I'll show a small image only (and that I won't to show off something, also made a link): My partner has something about 4xx posts, is well educated and running the forum good while I have something about 5xxx (don't really care about that post counter, but I'm there since '01).

So someone always should calculate the way someone handles his/her forum over the sole post counter anyway.

Well, although that board is usually neat in some of its features, I think this little enhancement might be good considering larger threads
A small sample how it might look with the standard phpbB icon:

If you clicked on that arrow, the thread would direct you to the last post on the proper page. Pretty convenient, if you are on /index.php and can access the most recently replied thread conveniently. Of course it could be also implemented in viewforum.php and I think that feature could be quite handy.

Alexa, I AM on dial-up and use these arrows quite often, at least in VBBs and phpBBs.
It is a matter of question. Of course we should not add _all_ features what common boards have, but that "link to la(te)st post" is just a small thought for a little more convience.
That's also a reason why I still like the manual idea of marking threads read by hand - what fully beats automatic markers (like when you leave a phpBB to another website, all forums are read later on; I want to decide for myself what I mark read and what not).

Of course not required, but AcmlmBoards anyway suck up huge amounts of bandwidths (as said, I'm on dial-up, at least an affordable ISDN-flatrate, in about one month upgraded to DSL, and I have enabled layouts and everything)

Posted on 01-30-05 09:22 PM, in Question about RSS newsfeeds (using Firefox) Link
I never messed with RSS, but decided to use the implemented feature of Acmlm's offering RSS, like you see when you are using that small icon in Firefox down right corner (default theme).

Then I want to test that by going into the previously created new bookmarkfolder and I receive that image, the German text means "Dynamic bookmark could not be loaded"

Am I simply too dumb to use a RSS reader, is it simply Firefox, since it is only has rudimentary aspects of a RSS reader or is there an error in coding ?
I'm using a naked Firefox 1.0 PR, without any extension or something else installed, so an erraneous extensions is no source.
It might not be that important, but I'd like to know if that is supposed to be that (by using not an external RSS reader) or not

I shut down my computer every evening/night fully - if I'm not lazy via Windows key, arrow up, arrow key right and enter.
If I'm lazy, I simply push the mechanical power button.

My computer is not that loud, but you hear the fan running, although it is a regulated one like in most newer computers. And I don't NEED the computer when I'm sleeping, especially because it stands in the same room my bed is in - and also I won't risk to lose it while it is stormy outside, a cable defect etc. (if fire eats up the computer its data are anyway lost - but then there's backups I make every two weeks)

Hmmm, I don't use PS but GIMP 2/PSP 8, but if I can trust the comparison pages between both programs, for most users Elements is just sufficient and the advanced layer management can be used by a work-around also in PE (although it might be a bit tedious as described).
