I wouldn't be surprised if someone has thought of this before...

Has everyone here played Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door? Well in case you haven't, you can talk to Luigi at various points in the game and he will describe in full detail an adventure that he's taking part in. He talks about going to the "Waffle Kingdom" and fighting enemies in places like "Pudding Continent."

So I was thinking, it be awesome if myself, or someone else could work on a SMW hack that is a SNES game version of Luigi's adventure.

I must admit, I have very little experience hacking SMW (I can get around in LunarMagic, but that's about it).

So I guess what I'm posting here for is to ask:

a) Is this a good idea?
b) Is it possible to make this game using only LunarMagic?
c) Would anyone here like to work on such a project with me?

Glad you like my idea!

I currently have no GFX (I'm assuming this means graphics, like sprites and what not?) aside from the GFX that are in the original SMW. I really don't have a clue about how to make my own GFX either, so if you could link me to the site you mentioned, I'd be very grateful.

I know there are some really exerienced hackers here, and I've played some of the great work that gets posted which is mainly why I asked for help. If you'd like to help me work on this, I'd be honored, but if you don't wish to, that's no big deal too.

By the way, here's a TXT file with everything Luigi says to you in Paper Mario:TTYD

Credit for these GFX (Graphic, Sprites, etc etc) goes to peter_ac he's the one who let people download it. I'm not very experienced in overworld maps, pretty much all I'm good at is designing the levels. This link is actually my demo which glitches in Yellow switch palace, but you can play it to see some of my work, and when you're done just erase my levels and make your own. I do think there is one kicker in doing this, and that is Luigi's goofy partners now how would we go about that?

Thanks for the link...

You're right though... I might be in over my head for this project... it'd be really hard to get Luigi's sidekicks to not only be in the game, but follow him around the levels. I'll probably need to sacrifice those sidekick characters.

Elements sound neat to me... even if they have been used in the past, you can still make your game original in other ways.

I say go for it.

I think if it was just called "Super Mario Element," that'd be pretty cool. A title is something you can think of when you're finished the project though. I'd just focus on making it now.

Luigi's partners might not make it in the game bud. I'm just taking things one step at a time... it's just a concept right now.

SoNotNormal: If you want to collaborate on this, I'd love the help. I'm really hoping to get a team together for this project. Don't feel obligated if you don't wantto though.

WOW... those screens are absolutely incredible! I especially like the background in the 3rd to last screenshot. Can you really pull that off on SNES?

Anywho, keep up the good work... I look forward to seeing this!

Woo!! Good to hear you guys want to work on it!

I really like the idea of having Luigi's partners being the ones trapped in the castles... it's a unique idea, and it saves us the trouble of having the characters in the gameplay.

timdevril: Custom graphics are essential at the moment considering that there are places like Strudel Continent and Curcuit Break Island. If you would like to be the one in charge of custom graphics, I would be honored.

SoNotNormal and Skyon: Can I count you guys in for working the project?

I was thinking we could stay in touch via email if you all do want to work on it. My e-mail address is tdodge@gmail.com

Anyone else who is interested in being a part of this game, please post in this thread. It looks like it could turn out great!

Bio: We'd love to have you onboard, although to be perfectly honest, I have no clue what ASM or HDMA is. As I had mentioned earlier, I have very limited hacking knowledge and can only do the basic kind of stuff in LunarMagic. Since ASM and HDMA sound nessacary though, welcome to the team.

Timdevril: Mario and Luigi graphics are fantastic, and they'd work really well in this game. If it helps, this site has a ton of sprites from the game:

Umm... ok. That's great. I think we should be a little more orginized though from now on. I know Skyon wants to do some levels, and I'd like to do a coupld as well, so lets say we divide them up somehow, eh? I'll need to count the total number of worlds in the game and figure out who gets what.

BTW, I'm going to be away starting tomorrow, and all the way through Sunday... my cousin is getting married. Lets try to get ourselves orginized by tonight so you can work without me tomorrow...

[Edit:] I'm coming up with a list of all the worlds and what they have in them. Once it's done, we can claim which levels we all want to do. Sound good? Or not?

Haha... I'm a guy. What made you think I'm female anyway?

... and SoNotNormal has dropped out? That's too bad.

Well... it looks like there are 6 Worlds that Luigi's quest takes place in.

Here they are:

1. Pudding Continent
2. Strudel Continent
3. Circuit Break Island
4. Jazzafrazz Town
5. Grimble Forest
6. Hatesong Tower

The TXT file that I posted earlier has descriptions of what all these levels look like. I'm starting to wonder though Skyon, what's your experience like in terms of level design? I don't want to offend you or anything, but I really want this to be top notch, so I'd like to see some of your earlier work.

Also, I'd hate to put the weight of all the custom graphics on timdevril alone - we're going to need a lot of them. Is there anyone else out there who'd want to work on custom graphics?

WOW!! That's what I think of your game so far. I've only played the first 2 levels, but I've seen some brilliant level design... it could even rival Nintendo's original YI level design.

Excellent work!! I know I'll be playing this for a while.

Wow... that's really nice level design man... sorry if I underestimated you. I just wanted to make sure you're competent.

I guess seeing as there are only 2 of us working on level design, we should each do 3 of the Worlds listed above. I'll let you pick your three and you can make them however you please, all I ask is that the levels match Luigi's description.

So this is going to be my last post for a little bit. As I said, I've got a wedding to go to this weekend, so I won't be around to work on the project. If you guys want to go ahead and get a head start on working, I'd be honored, but I'm flexible... you can all work at your own pace.

See you guys on Monday, and have good weekends!

OK guys... got some bad news.

I can no longer involve myself with this project. I attended classes for the first time since last Wednesday today, and I suddenly realised how far behind I was in my studies. This is my freshman year in college, and I've discovered that every test/project is worth a thousand times more than the work you do in high school, so I really need to devote all my attention to school. If I were to screw up on 1 test because I didn't study, I'd be done for.

You guys are free to turn my idea into a real game on your own if you wish, but I can't help. Sorry if I got everyone's hopes up... I hope you can all understand.

Posted on 09-21-05 10:05 AM, in Level Design on paper anyone? Link
This is a really interesting topic...

I haven't been able to devote the time to a complete hack yet, but I've made a few levels that I'm quite proud of.

I never start a level on paper. I make the level in LunarMagic, start to finish, and then review what I did. I usually find a ton of stuff I don't like about the design, so I delete that stuff and put new ideas in their places. Then I repeat that process again and again until I've created a level that I'm entirely satisfied with.

It's a pretty time consuming method, but my levels turn out great in the end (or at least, I think so).

Family Guy would not exist if it wasn't for the Simpsons. Family Guy is by no means original. Half the jokes are borrowed from old Simpsons episodes that the kids who watch Family Guy are too young to know.

Simpsons is superior, no doubt.

I hate these threads cause Family Guy always ends up with more votes, even though it's crap. Kids need to know their roots, thats what I say! *shakes cane*
