There's nothing wrong with the character's feet... His boots are black, the background is black. You need a way to identify those different elements...

The outline is odd, but we are talking about the NES, a console well-known by it's few few colors - and odd solutions are sometimes necessary.

Konami itself used the outline in the first Castlevania in the bats.. Nintendo used it on Super Mario 3's ghosts. And probably other NES artists used that in the past.

"GFX-only" hacks are always destroyed by the critics and that's not fair. Dr. Mario did a wonderful job and the outline is just a demonstration of his ability to avoid problems with the always challenging NES palette.

After watching those 500 screenshots, I finally played the hack today.

The original Castlevania is a hell of a good game, but it's GFX are strange... Strange combination of colors, strange positions for the background tiles, "strange" this, "strange" that... Sooner or later, someone had to do the job of making CV1 look good - and Dr.Mario did it.

The main character really looks like the one from the second Playstation CV game. I know how hard is to make a job like this, so here I am sayin' "congratulations" to Doc Mario again.

The backgrounds are the most attractive change of the hack. Everything looks elegant and correctly placed. It's a big relief to play Castlevania with beautiful, discrete and organized tiles everywhere.

ROM hacks are good because you can make absolutely anything without concern about sales, censorship, good reception of the public, etc.etc. Dr. Mario chose to make a very very dark visual modification - if it was an "official" game released in the 80's maybe it could be way too scary for the kids. But, as I said, this is his vision and I liked it a lot.

My only suggestion is: Please, make a version for the japanese cartridge game. It has an "easy mode" and only playing it on easy I can see the game till the end. Castlevania is very hard to me even today and I - and a lot of bad players - would love to see your entire modification project.

Once again, congratulations!
Macbee
P.S.: To the people with lots of Castlevania versions, patch the game in the PRG1 ROM.

Hi! A Brazilian page made a recent (12/19/2004) interview with Vagla about his MegaMan game. It's not dead and he still want to release a demo as soon as possible.

If you can read Portuguese, I recommend a visit to "Nightshade Hideout". And if you can't I still recommend because there are a lot of new screens of the game

OK Disch, I'm sorry. In fact I didn't knew the entire staff of the game and wrote that wrong information.

By the way, I can't acess the translated link by Someguy. And if you can't , just like me, here is a translation (always remembering that my English sucks):

"Megaman Vengeance isn't dead

The world was amazed recently with Brian Provinciano's port of GTA3 for the NES, but that isn't the first time that a new game is created. You can frequently see new games coming from the Asian pirates or even by fans, usually American students.

Sometime ago we saw the release of 'Sack of Flour' - a very regular game except by the fact of it's year of production, 2002, and by the number of the people involved, just five.

But in 2003 we saw the announcement of a 100% new fan-game called MegaMan Vengeance. An action game based on the latest adventures of "Capcom's BlueBomber'.

At the boards of Dragon Eye Studios (R.I.P.) some screenshots appeared, with a very special one..... The graphics were beautilful, but the shock comes with the presence of a never-seen-before effect on the NES: The distortion of objects and movement made by the water.

The NES community became nuts, and couldn't wait to play MMV. But the programming take a hell of a time and the 'coming soon' term wasn't very precise.

In March / 2004 the source code was stolen, but as Vagla himself said: 'It didn't went too far away'. However, this fact was enough to let the team without motivation and cease the production of the game. Vagla, one of the men behind MegaMan Vengeance, left the Romhacking scene and the project was apparently dead.

We located Vagla to talk a little about the project. He says that the project isn't dead and a demo will be released in a 'few' months. But he also says that the he and the rest of the team ins't working that much on it lately.

When we asked about the GTA3 port for the NES, Vagla said that it is a wonderful initiative but he wonders if the precision of the controls will be as good as the one present in MMV. And about the GTA graphics, he liked a lot.

We tried to get acess to a MMV demo and he just said 'no way!'. But he got some new screens and here they are!"

Hello! I'm glad to announce my first group hack. I am helping Someguy and Keitaro to change the game "Panic in Nakayosi World (J)" for the Super Famicom / Super NES..

The plan is to convert the look of the original game into a "Marioish" one.. The project is just starting and maybe the rest of the team would like to talk about it too.

I'm still making my other hack (the Super Mario World turning Super Mario 1) and here is the preview of how Mario will look in "Panic..."

EDIT: D'oh! I wanted to make this tread to be named "Makin' Mario the star of 'Panic in Nakayosi World". Can some moderator fix it, please?
Thanks

Well, Keitaro isn't working directly but his name should me mentioned. New picture with the same Mario in his original size and in an interpolated giant shot.

And thanks DahrkDaiz for fix the title!

Hello everybody! I am very unlucky... Some of you may remember that I was working in an SMW to SMB1 conversion, but another guy from the board made it first (and better).

Well, I was thinking... I could make a new hack, with no new levels.. Just new graphics, exactly like I (and hundreds of ROM hackers) did years ago with SMB1 for the NES.

I don't like the look of SMW. I could "update" it to make it use all the potential of the Super Nintendo and let the ROM unlocked to give to you all sort of a library of new GFX.

I would like to hear your opinion about it

Bye and sorry about my English errors

OK.. We have reactions of love and hate... This is good, I guess..

Well, first I would like to ask about those cool features (CGADSUB and HDMA). Any help about where I can find info or tutorials would be really nice.

And a little more information about the project: I will not use rips. My plan is to make a game with 100% original graphics everywhere.

I truly respect the opinion of Kyouji Craw and understand his point of view. But mine should be respected too. I know that Lunar Magic is very friendly and intuitive - about four years ago I made a hack using LM.

My intention is simple... SMW is a wonderful game, but even in 1991 I was shocked with the simplicity of the GFX. I just want to change this... If someone says: "I want to change the songs of the game, nothing more", that's OK... This is just a Mario hack, don't take a good hobby that serious.

Trust me, Kario... In my first contact with SMW, I was only impressed by the music. The graphics weren't revolutionary. In fact was a "NES with good colors" look... Disappointing. Nintendo promised to destroy Sega Genesis and I believe that only Donkey Kong Country or Kirby 3 style of graphics would impress me. But I am very critic, so don't be bothered by my comments.

Hello! I'm trying to leave Nesticle as my main hacking helpin' hand and today I downloaded FCEUXD. But I am already full of questions. The first is about pallete hacking.

Using the PPU Viewer, I located the number of colors of several NES games. Then I opened the Hex Editor, changed the values and the modifications were even visible in real time on the emulator. I tought that clicking on "FILE -> SAVE ROM" would enough, but the changes weren't saved... And I tried various ROMs... Can someone help me please?

Thanks

Hi Friends! After a long time with nothing online, my hacks page is back and with new versions of old projects:

As Tartarugas Ninja 1.0 - I tought version 0.9 would be the last due a terrible bug (The points weren't registered correctly), but it was fixed and now the game can be played perfectly. The turtles are ripped from TMNT3 for the GameBoy, so expect the Turtles finally looking like the Turtles. =) Other visual changes and a Portuguese translation are features of this hack.

Batman MCB 1.2 - Just a few adjustments on this project. My goal is to make Batman looking like the movie's Dark Knight and removing the fat, purple Batman created by Sunsoft.

Super Mario MCB 4.0 - My first hack, made in 1998, is still being updated. Better colors, Hammer Bros ripped from SMB3 and a huge improvement on compatibility with some of the newer and better emulators around.

Mickey MCB 1.2 - Again, just a few adjustments. The japanese version from Hudson Soft is very different from the American one by Capcom. I tried to mix the best elements of both versions and improve the look of the backgrounds, Mickey and Minnie;

Some veterans may remember that I don't distribute patches, just ROMs. There are so many dumps of the same games and the chances to make mistakes patching wrong ROMs are very high. So, my friends, send me a private message and I will reply it with the link.

I honestly hope so. There's no reason to forbid this. I understand that officialy it's sort of a taboo, but would be hypocrisy if even using PMs we can't talk about ROMs.

Hello!
I'm making a new GFX-only hack. This time I'm trying to make Shinobi for the NES look like the visually superior Master System version. The game will be in Black and White and all I have now is a "before and after" screenshot of the Title Screen, take a look:

Thanks for the comments. Bit Blade, I never said that the hacked game will look better than the original - it will just be closer than the Master System version of Shinobi. I have no idea of how to integrate palettes, so I will continue to make my 3-shades of gray alterations. =)

By the way, another screenshot:

Hmm. I could create a custom palette, but the characters wouldn't be more detailed - NES sprites can have a maximum of 3 colors. The custom palette would be nice just to make the backgrounds and characters with different shades. I will think about it. Thanks for the idea. I will post new screens soon.

Yes sir, I will do it right...

Hmm.. It sounds so cool, but I have no ASM knowledge. I am not a real ROM hacker, I just like to change graphics. I'm a ROM modifier, or a hacking fraud if you prefer

And, with seven colors, I would probably send the grayscale plan away...
