I started with the Intellivision and Burgertime. I remember saving up $100 to get the NES when it came out. Not a simple task when you're six.

So, I placed a rather large order with Lik-Sang (about $700), and a few days later I received this email from them:

Dear Blaine Higdon

We apologize in advance for bothering you. We have received your payment via PayPal, but unfortunately your account is classified as [unverified] by PayPal. For security reasons and to protect against Internet fraud, Lik Sang cannot process your order right away.

In order to proceed with your purchase, it is required that you contact PayPal to get your account verified.

If you are unable to get your PayPal account verified for any reason, please supply the following materials to Lik Sang:

(1) A photocopy of your ID Card, Drivers License or Passport (if possible showing your address).

(2) Any recent utility bill showing your shipping address (phone, gas or electricity bill etc).

(3) Write your Lik Sang order number (473381) and your PayPal email on the same page.

For your convenience, you may send these materials to us by E-Mail if you have a scanner or digital camera, or by fax or postal mail:

- E-Mail: manual@lik-sang.com
- Fax: +852 3015 8461

Since my account is [verified], and has been for quite a long time (I use it for everything), I replied saying "Actually, my account is verified. Please check this again. Here's a link you can use to see for yourself: https://www.paypal.com/us/verified/pal=tzepish%40gmail%2ecom"

They responded with this:

Dear Blaine,

Thank you for your email. Even though your account is verified with PayPal, we still need to authorize your order with our payment processor.

Please understand that because of current billing policies for online payments, the manual authorization process cannot be avoided. Please kindly send us the requested documents as outlined in the initial email sent to you.

I absolutely understand that you might feel uncomfortable sending this type of document to a company overseas, or if there are technical reasons for not being able to send the requested materials.

If you do not want to send us the requested materials, please consider paying by bank deposit to one of our bank accounts, as this will not require any additional documents.

Please rest assured that Lik-Sang.com protects your data using top-notch security mechanisms, and that no unnecessary data is stored on our network. Lik-Sang.com participates in the Verified By Visa and Master Secure programs, and went through extensive reviews to ensure all systems and policies are above required security standards. Our company has been in the online business since 1997, and has served thousands and thousands of customers worldwide over the years.

Your order will be automatically cancelled after a while if you shouldn't follow up. We apologize for the inconvenience and regret being unable to avoid this manual authorization process.

Best regards,

Zal

So... in the first email, I was told I need to take these steps only if my account cannot be verified through paypal, and now I'm being told I have to do this crap anyway? So I asked about the bank deal, since I don't have a bill to photo copy and send (I don't keep those laying around, although maybe I should). And then this was sent to me:

***

Dear Blaine,

You can change the payment information in your account details and select the option to pay via bank payment. Unfortunately, unless you can provide us with the requested details to authorize your order, we cannot place a charge on your PayPal account.

Best regards,

Zal

Wait, "unless you can provide us with the requested details to authorize your order, we cannot place a charge on your PayPal account." ? Not only did they admit to already placing the charge in their first email, but I have verified with paypal, my bank, and Lik-Sang's order status that the charge has been placed. Not only that, but no, I cannot change my payment type on this order on that screen... and they charged me anyway. So I emailed them saying "How about this: since you have already charged my paypal account, send me the merchandise that I paid for. Thank you." I was told to send the documents.

I can wait for two weeks or so for my next bill and send that with a photocopy of my driver's license, or I can tell Lik-Sang to stick it. Unfortunately, there was no cancel option when checking my order status, but according to the second email, they do have the capacity to cancel orders, so I'm thinking of emailing "Zal" and telling him to cancel my order. However, I am honestly unsure as to whether I'll be getting the funds back from these pricks. It'd probably be less hassle just to wait two weeks and send them the stuff, receive my order, and make my first order with Lik-Sang my last.

Thanks for listening to my rant. <3

I lived paycheck to paycheck for about a year and a half out of sheer necessity - my bills (and food) really were equal to what I made. I learned how to survive off one or zero meals a day if I ever needed money for any reason. Now my financial situation is more secure, but I'm still pretty good at saving money.
