#137 Puzzles are good. The more complex the better. Though I'll admit, it's hard to make good puzzles in SMW (especially if all you use is the original blocks), but it's doable.

Java is your friend. Graphics don't make a game, though I'll admit, Rs is tedious at times, but you can have fun doing it too; talk to people, make friends, enjoy your time.

NOTE: This topic is old. I have done many diffrent things to it since I made this topic, and all the pictures in my Album have been deleted. I will remake this when I have more to present. DO NOT BUMP THIS.




SMA, or Super Mario's Adventure, is my first hack. Well, technically it's not done yet, but I have a demo and lots of screen shots already. The pics are on this post, but I haven't uploaded the demo yet (Can anyone suggest a site for hosting files? Like storage, not a full fledged web page, please)

They're not in any particular order.
Please give me suggestions, comments, constructive criticism, etc., I want to know more about hacking. And yes, later on I'll put in custom blocks and GFX. But for now, I'm using the ordinary things that were in the game.

P.S, is Super Mario's Adventure a unique name? I looked in all the stickies, nothing had this name already.

In response to your posts-

1. The level with a peach background is up a little bit, so you can't see the mountains in the background. I'll mess around with it so the mountains are taller.
And the whole level isn't just cement blocks, it's a part of the same level as the pipes and the boo.

2. I'll fix the piranha plant thing then, thanks. I actually have that a lot, will be fixed in my demo (once I find a proper host)

3. Gimme a minute to learn how to change the map 16 tiles, then I'll do your suggestion Bio.

4. The reappearing ghosts are a problem? If it's a matter of difficulty, I could get through that spot pretty easily, but I usually take only one hit. I'll put some fire flowers before that room or something so you can take some hits in that room.

5. Thank you for the big boo boss arena compliment, I'm rather partial to that level myself

P.S I still need a file host!!! I searched Google, all the sites I found wanted money

EDIT: The map 16 editor isn't listening to me I took the black piranha plant, copied it to another blank tile, then changed the tiles it uses to a different block which I found suitable, and left the properties as 12F, but when I click OK, the editor totally ignores what I did, like I clicked cancel instead of OK. And I know I'm clicking OK

EDIT 2: Figured it out for the most part, still ironing out a few kinks

I've already got the screenshots covered, thanks. Also, I figured out how to work the map 16 editor (on accident actually), and now I've made a new block that hurts you when you touch it, turns into a coin when you push a silver POW, but still looks the same (the only problem).

Yes, before the battle there's 2 blocks with flowers in them so you can take some hits. I'll add a midway point or something so you don't have to restart the level if you die. And yes, there's two rows of throw blocks, an eerie generator, a reflecting boo and the boss. If the ledge hole is that bad, I'll take it out. It's not like I put only 3 throw blocks in the room Want me to replace the bottom row of spikes with a row of throw blocks?

And I deleted the pic with stacked piranhas and replaced it with this:



That's why it's a red X.

And also, the contrasts are all messed up in the pics. It's darker in the game, must be ZSNES taking funny screenshots.

And I'm also totally confused about what host to use now I'll just look around at all the sites you guys posted.

That's almost excatly what I was thinking when I designed that layout. Besides, if you only use the top layer of throw blocks (Which you should) You can't fall down the hole. Want me to give you a star while I'm at it?

In mountain valley 6, at the very end... if you miss the goal star the auto scroll pushes you past it and traps you. Since there's no time limit in that level (or any for that matter) it's impossible to escape or die to escape and you are forced to reset.

In volcano plateau 4, the secret exit doesn't seem to exist, and I looked really hard (Or I thought so). Is there a hint anywhere or something?

And, I wasn't sure if you were trying to make your hack cape-free or what, but there's a feather in 1-1 winter edition that you can get, and once you get it, you can take blue shells through goal posts and they transform into further feathers.

In the cutscene after you beat castle 4, Mario becomes glitched up if you have a fire flower (haven't tried small, cape or big)

Finally, there are various layer-priority bugs in scattered places.

Otherwise, it is a great hack, the graphics are wonderful, I totally enjoyed it to the end.

You left a time limit on this level; if someone takes an exceptionally long time to do it, they might just randomly die since there's no time counter O.o

EDIT TWO: Grah, forgot to say what level it was. It's Hot Desert 2.

Koneko, I had this exact same problem because I never knew you had to convert hex to decimal in blocktool. No wonder all my blocks didnt work But now I know, thanks times ten

MAJOR GLITCH ALERT

In the OW, Isle Secret's path activates down instead of right. The star road it makes is totally inaccessable.

Other Minor glitches --

In the last part of ghost cave, the black area is blocked by an invisible force. I tried fireballs, spin attack, grabbing like a throw block, nothing worked. Flying over it doesn't work either. Can be bypassed using the secret exit in previous level.

When you have 9 or less goal stars, the tens place in the coins counter doesn't appear.

The tens place of the lives count turns bluish in most levels when you get more then 10 lives.

The bonus game has horizontal scroll enabled, allowing you to see an empty pit and a duplicate bonus game The lives float in midair when you finish the game too.

Layer priority is on on the item box, so whatever you have inside it is hard to see.

The hopping fires are messed up in the Secret Oasis level.

...

That's all I found for now. Note that I haven't gone past level Green Isle 1 in the demo yet, so I may find more.
