I agree with cpu, hackers tend to think there hack is easy since they know every little trick to whiz right through it, but fail to see things from the audience's perspective, thus they make it ridiculously difficult. When I made SMW+3, I had so many ideas for cool, challenging puzzles, that I went ahead full force to put all of these in that hack. I didn't really stop to realize that not everyone will understand the puzzles as I had, so ultimately a lot of people had very much trouble and to this day I can only think of one person besides me who has beaten it (shout out to Sonicandtails ). Anyway, my point being, it's not you in particular who's at fault, it's very often the author for making the hack too hard. Peace.

Man, that is one damn good-lookin' hack you got there.

1st screen: That looks really awesome and well-done, nothing to complan about here.
2nd screen: Very good too, not really that crazy about the BG because it isn't as detailed as the others, but that's the only reason, it still looks great.
3rd screen: A magnificently beautiful BG, especially the trees, they're very detailed and vivid and catch your eyes. Great job! Those lil' dudes at the bottom look cool too, what are they?
4th screen: I agree with Sky Troopa, the BG is a bit odd. What I think the problem is that all parts of the BG are too light, so there isn't really any kind of contrast, which makes it a bit dull. You want to add more of a contrast to the colors in the hills and trees probably.
5th screen: Everything looks fine here.
6th screen: Another beautiful BG, one that catches your eye.

From what I see here I am looking forward to playing a demo. You seem to have graphics down-packed, but I hope your level design is of equal or greater quality to your graphics. I have faith that it will though .

Here are my two cents:

Screen 1: I don't think the overworld looks too bad. From what I se here it appears to be shaped abstractly as opposed to a simple shape like a square. Good. The palette doesn't look bad either, especially if you're going for a gloomy appearance. I just don't think it will go good with the rest of your levels if they're not so gloomy.

Screen 2: Nothing too impressive over here since the Star Road is very similar to that of SMW, other than that, I like that idea you had for opening up the paths on the road.

Screen 3: Not really impressed here. The status bar isn't the best though. The item box looks decent, but the 0 for the bonus star counter is really thin, the "TIME" looks really squashed together, moreso the "T", and the "1" in the time counter seems far away from the other two numbers, probably because your "1" graphics are too small.

Screen 4: I'm in agreement with everyone else that the BG is horrendous, so they've pretty much said everything that had to be said.

Which switch are you referring to, the blue/grey P-switch or the ! switch that fills in the dotted line blocks? If you're referring to the ! switch, the only thing I can think of is that you accidently changed the "Tile Acts Like" setting for the switch via DM16.

That second screen he has looks really good. He used the YI gfx almost as well as I can in the actual game. Then again it's easier since he can see what he's doing in LM, but nonetheless it looks great.

Since you can't delete overworld sprites automatically, go into the overworld menu, click "Overworld" then "Edit Sprite List". Change the unwanted sprites to "Nothing" and they will go away. You can then use them at a later time if you need them. Also, you can just move the sprites to an unused part of the map just incase you don't have to worry about adding and deleting them, you just use them when the time is right. To do so, click the Lakitu symbol on the overworld editor toolbar and move the sprites to an unused area so that you can save them for another time, if this is what you want to do. Otherwise if you don't want them at all, do what I said before.

Hmm...maybe to make the sand look more beachlike you can add little nooks and crannies into it such as seashells or pebbles. Also, I think it'd be better not to have a lot of grass, if any, on the sand for a beach level, but if it's more of a jungle level you can keep it. And I don't really know what's up with that BG, I know you can do better, but I'm sure that's just a temporary BG, right?

Man, I've never been inspired to play a hack from simply seeing the overworld alone, but it looks really great and makes me look forward to playing this hack. It's good to finally see a hack in progress from you. The suggestions I have are:

1. Try changing the shades of orange in the sky in the overworld to a more gradual change rather than a really dark orange, nearly brown, to significantly lighter shades of orange.
2. Fix that weird little ledge thing is the middle of the bottom left screen, it looks pretty strange, and not so good, what's it supposed to be?
3. In these screens you have some waterfalls that meet the ends of the curved ledges at the bottom of them. These curved ledges have their shadows in the water, and this is good, but in the brown cave shot the top waterfall does not meet a curved ledge yet the shadows are still present. Maybe there are supposed to be curves there that you can't see, but at a first glance it doesn't look right so you might want to fix that up a bit.

Otherwise it looks great. My favorite things are the main overworld clouds, the sun, and the moon graphics. Plus, I can't tell what those little things are on the rocks and pipes in the main OW, is it supposed to be some kind of grass? They kind of look like aliens.

Anyway, judging from the superb job you've done with the overworld design and graphics, you're level graphics should look pretty spiffy too. Hopefully your level designing skills will be great too, so don't let us down.

Awesome status bar. The only problem is with Mario's head, the outline is red and it looks strange so you should fix it. Great job!

By the way, the overworld now looks even better. I'm glad you took my advice and changed some stuff. Plus, those little extra things such as the fishes in the water, the hole in the waterfall, and the little star figures on the moon look great. I can't wait to see some level screens too!

Posted on 06-23-05 07:26 PM, in Split hack, good idea? Link
I'm working on a hack (Yoshi's Island) and I used up a lot of room in the ROM from later worlds to make my earlier levels bigger. Now that I'm approaching the final two worlds, I don't have enough room to make levels really big, if anything the size and quality of the levels will go down due to the lack of space. So I was thinking of making this hack a "split" hack. I doubt anyone has ever done this before, because to me it sounds pretty stupid, but I feel I have no other choice if I want to make my later levels just as good, or even better, than my earlier levels. What I'd do is have the first four worlds on one ROM and the last two on a second ROM. The zip file would include two ips patches, plus a savegame so you can skip to World 5 in the second ROM once you've finished World 4. Obviously, you can just skip to World 5 if you want, but if you really want the proper gaming experience you could play it in order. So, is this a good idea?

Yeah, like I said I would include a savegame, so after completing World 4 you can go to World 5. I just don't want the quality of levels to go down because of the lack of space, so this is the only solution I could think of.

Hmm...four votes for "yes" so far, I'm starting to feel this is probably my best choice regarding the hack, unless someone says otherwise.

Well, the levels in SMW run from 0 to 1FF in Lunar Magic, so you should find all the levels you need. A couple exceptions include some parts of Chocolate Island 2, and the boss levels (shown as the red levels which read "Boss level: cannot render" in LM). Other than that you should be able to find all the levels you need plus extra levels you can use (the levels that read "TEST"). To find out how a room is linked to another, go to the level and choose "View Screen Exits". Go to the exit object, such as a door or pipes, and read the level number it leads to at the top of the screen. To add an exit, click "Level" then "Add/Modify/Delete Screen Exits" enter the destination level, the screen number of the exit, and hit OK. You can only have one screen exit per screen though.

Well obviously this has come across my mind, and if I knew how to do it I most definitely would. Unless someone here knows how I would go about doing this, any help would be appreciated.
