I lost mine when I was 14, but I'm one willing to look back and say "hm, that wasn't a good idea." Especially considering it was unprotected, I got lucky... REALLY lucky (in more than one way, she was just some random girl, but she was hawt ) that she didn't get pregnant, or that I didn't catch anything.

Sure underage sex laws aren't strongly enforced, but there are a lot of laws that are here for the sole reason to try to stop us from doing dumb shit to ourselves (or partner, in this case). Enforced or not. If an unenforced law stops even a measly 10% of teenage pregnancies, then I think it's getting something good done.

But really now, this isn't about you**, or your girlfriend, or responsibility from either or both of you, or your rights. No, not at all. It's about the parents. Offspring are basically a couple steps up from pets. You're property with a lot of responsibility until you're outta the house and on your own (or 18+... living at home...). The law is protecting their property, which is you.

**Generically speaking, specific addressing not intended

It is free. You're just participating in a program that is not free, that's a choice. Otherwise, there is a free education available to you. Other options include the ability to obtain a GED which at least lets you not be in school and work full time, but at least certifies you do have the knowledge as though you passed high school.

Avoid those state tests though .. Although usually harder, if you ever want to do anything with the government, or in a different state, they're likely to reject it.

You should probably specify that you mean a god as opposed to the capital G God, which to my knowledge refers specifically to the christian God. Because the things you're saying don't exactly agree with the christian faith's "God", but rather an entirely new god who has theoretically done things in a very different way.

As an Atheist I can only have faith that a god does not exist and of course, never has. Although I do find it perfectly as possible that a sentient being/force could have been behind the workings to create the properties of matter, and the matter itself, quite possibly in a controlled manner.

Does it matter if any form of god exists? Yes...ish, but only to mankind. To us it matters as much as knowing who our father or mother is, who created us and what purpose they or another who is in command may have in store for us. Someone to praise, someone to hate, someone to go to for answers, someone of whom to ask for aid. Much like the parallel I've drawn, it matters more to some than others (not at all to some as well).

But I'll continue to say until the day that I die that the concept of intelligent design and a greater being is to fufill a few primal needs.

Dammit.. I had a full response earlier, and my computer froze.. damned 125 watt power source.. oh well, replaced it with a 300 watt and things are now ~smoooth~. Anyway...

It is my belief that living things are in fact programmed (no quotations for emphasis), via DNA. Computers use binary from various mediums and manipulate machines, gadgets, and visual mediums. The body, on the other hand, is programmed via a (greek word for 12)inary base of chemical pairs of adenine, guanine, thymine, and cytosine that manipulate a more chemical medium, and is "upgraded" overtime by way of trial and error (survival of the fittest/evolution/whatever).

Now sticking with this reasoning, I'd call the brain an operating system. Limbs, organs, skin, etc. are more like programs. But instead of the way of the harddrive, where there is a space limit, and the code is written onto it, the cells react to their base code, and create the "program" accordingly by multiplying, arranging, and changing their balance of chemicals according to the code provided.

Now, like a very advanced, machine-based computer; the body/mind reacts to various chemical presenses (internal and external), system statuses, sensory input, and keeps a stored database of cause and effect. Some machines (living things) are hard-coded differently (different DNA), and will react differently based on all of these inputs.

Where I'm getting at is, how can "creativity" not be programmed? It already has been! Now I don't think a computer can be creative like us, per se, because our form of programming is heavily reliant on chemical levels which translate into thoughts and emotions. But I think a computer can be made to be "mused" and "inspired" by outside forces that it can detect, what it does detect, what relevance and priority the detected things have, how they will be used, and what creative display it will be transposed upon is up to the programmers.

I think if some form of self-growth (in the live and learn sense) were implemented, like interperetation of feedback, (like say it "learns" what patterns and methods score higher in its creations).

***********Read this if you want to just get the short end of it***********

So in review, I believe that computers can have some form of independant thought, although it's subject to interperetation, but, I don't believe it's likely to make one creative in a human manner.

An seemingly typical American's "American Dream" is to be better than most of their peers or "make it to the top". A more reasonable American's dream is to have the "essentials" required for a faily normal life, house, 1 vehicle per adult, 2.8 kids, no debts, and a possible nest egg to look forward to.

Unless you're lucky, or white, or both it's very hard.

From posts I've read so far, I kinda like you. Seriously though, if you were serious, you can bite me. The only difference being white would make nowadays is having family connections, other than that, affirmitive action does its job of leveling the playing field, if not tipping it the other way.

For the inner city poor, there's vocational schools and community college. I came from a shitty city, being white meant nothing in your favor, being poor only meant you probably weren't going to a university, at least without a loan or scholarship. Any capable person from any previous fiscal standing willing to act appropriately, save up, and spend wisely (e.i. education for employable/promotable skills) can make it to middle class. The only reason I've ever seen minorities or lower class getting turned down in a seemingly biased manner was actually because of how they carried themselves and the impression that they made.

And of course it's hard to move up from lower class to upper/upper-middle... it's kinda supposed to be that way, doesn't usually happen in one generation.

For those that rely on a god for results, the concept of god is a nuisance, for those that "draw strength" or do good deeds in that name, I'd say just the opposite. So far, however, I'd say that most gods and concepts of are nuisances when net result is considered.

Right or wrong , some people need to believe (most, actually ), some don't, so I think it's impossible to address what you're stating in a generic sense, because it relies too heavily on an individual.

My girlfriend and I got caught fooling last week around by her rich jewish 75 year old dad after 11 months of never even being suspected.

No one can top that in hilarity and awkwardness. Well, if you can that'd be awesomely funny.

How about dogs? Or moths? Maybe not the end-all proof, but certainly in the favor of those who find "macroevolution" to be a very likely answer.
We really only have like 10000 or so (I'm throwing a number out here, so don't take that too seriously, I'm talking about recorded history, I just don't find it entirely necessary to find out very specifically how far back this goes for the sake of this arguement) years of give or take "reliable" evidence to tool around with. So instead of looking for the millions of year process of large-scale from single cell organism to fully formed human as proof of "macroevolution", we have to find smaller scale examples, like the survival of the fittest with the white moths during the industrial revolution, which from what I recall, died out in certain areas because they no longer blended in with the trees they hid on, and thusly a darker version of this moth came out on top, because they did blend in with the trees that were consequently darker from the smoke in the air

Now I think dogs are the closest thing to proof we have. Through selective breeding, we've specialized these creatures for hunting various animals, for being obedient, and/or being fairly docile for more house-pet purposes. I find it extremely unlikely that nearly all of each of these were wild breeds that were captured and domesticated in each of their entireties, and just happened to be well suited in catching what people wanted them to in a way they wanted them to.

A counter arguement to that I would expect is saying that there is a huge difference between selective, controlled breeding, and the debated natural selection. To that I would like to say that the only difference I see is in who is making the decision on what traits are considered favorable.

Posted on 09-18-05 04:32 AM, in Can software truly be copyrighed? Link
And books shouldn't be copyrighted because they're a long string of ascii characters...

I agree that software should maintain the right to be copyrighted, just as much as a specific design of car should have its ability to be copyrighted, but copyrighting a type of software (like say if adobe gained the rights to image creation and editing) seems kinda.... immoral, and is just a bad idea on the consumer end.

People on a salary put many hours into the software on the premise that they'll get paid for it. The employers of the employees put up the money to pay the employees, have the software packaged, etc. on the idea that people would buy the product and give them a profit, just like with any other product. If their rights aren't protected, they'll just stop making it, because there's no money in it.

Personally, I wouldn't take the time to invest in software development if i knew the result would be some hacker convincing themself "L0L u cant steel software its not reel." and my profit margin coming out negative.

I mean really though, if you can't copyright software, no one would put a lot of money into it to make it something worth buying, and we'd have to use nothing but open source, which isn't always that great, and leaves you vulnerable to all kinds of exploits the home developers may have in store for you.

Oh man, and video games, say goodbye to those if the contained "number" can't be copyrighted.

Actually, it seems like you've mis-read my post. I addressed all of those things, except maybe the difference between logic and creativity. Not to mention there was no "wrong way" for me to look at this, as the topic is extremely open ended to begin with.

The difference between logic and creativity: Spontaneousness. But even then, I don't think that humans are at all spontaneous in their creativity anyway, as explained in my above post, it's about chemical levels, external influences, and how the brain is both hard-wired and taught (self taught or otherwise) to react. So the real line between creativity and logic is in whether or not an onlooker chooses to call it either a complex logical output based on external events, how these events were interepereted, and emotions (the chemical levels I was talking about) thusly invoked as a result of the interperetation, or creativity.

A computer would have to have an extremely complex system of emulators to even begin to think and learn like a human to a convincing degree, But, for pretend sake, it's kind of self defeating to ask that if a computer could learn like us (and therefore think like us, can't really have one without the other), could it have "creativity". Of course! it's one of the definers of human thought in the first place!

The human brain is nothing special, eh? It's one of the most complex things in the known (bolded for emphasis) universe, and its complete abilities have yet to be understood, and we USE the damned thing, I fail to see the lack of specialness in that.
