Detatch emotions from the situation, mentally reorganize/reprioritize/re-whatever-elseitize, and then reattatch. And if it's bad enough, just stay detatched and treat the situation in the third person, panic and fear serve me nothing else but to dampen my ability to solve or deal with it. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

Since I don't know anyone/no one knows me, I'll just say: LOL, internet *walks away*. And yes, I'd say "el oh el". Actually, if there's any martial artists here, I'd challenge them to a sparring match ... |

Originally posted by SamuraiX This is the root of the current disagreements on the usage of the word "faith" in this statement. We're referring to however he just used it in this particular sentence. I assumed a purely religious definition, namely definition #2:" Belief that does not rest on logical proof or material evidence.", since he was on the topic of debate, which is logic based. But on second look that could have very well been in reference to the more generic, not-neccesarily-religious faith, in definition #1. Upon further review I conclude that I now hate the word "faith", and will never use it again, unless in reference to the word itself. (edited by Zer0wned on 09-09-05 09:56 PM) (restricted) |

**disclaimer, all just theorizing, I have no definitive proof and little backup ** |
When people (namely those close to you) die, powerful emotions are brought out for several reasons: A sudden significant life change. This has a tendency to affect people that aren't used to change, or a certain type of change (someone could be used to moving, but a person that's with them is still a constant, if they were to be removed, it'd be more likely to induce some form of trauma). Mere self-preservation. It's like a fear/disgust of corpses. Something's dead. Something like me is dead. Oh, shit, is what killed him/her going to kill me too? (this is probably one of the more insignificant reasons, if one at all) Realization of one's own pending demise. If you know someone, it makes them seem more real, not so much like a random person you don't tend to consider. When they die, it brings that topic up a little more up front and clearly. Societal pressure. Seeing someone unnerved about the death of someone that was close to you, but not so much to them can seem fairly disrespectful to many people. I think overtime a sort of sympathy pain has become almost required in order to maintain respect among peers. Also, just seeing everybody else so sad tends to get to you (that's the main reason I get sad at funerals, seeing people I know cry makes me sad) Species... procreation? I'm looking for a word that's like anti-death... Anyway, this is the more hard-wired instinct to preserve one's own species (I think I found my anti-death word ). Someone earlier mentioned a scenario with an unkept kid over a man. I have no doubt that many (not all, of course) people will at least have some inner twitch to help the kid out. (i'll also like to add that most people would be more concerned with the living kid than the dead man, which I think aids my point in some way). @Slay- If you were to feel for every random, timely death, and care for the demise of your enemies genuinely, I would find you to be a very disturbing person. I find your "negative" view to be the most reasonable. (restricted) | (restricted) |

Originally posted by Trapster I'd guess a good 60% of getting elected is how much money you have to work with, and how charismatic you are. Sounds like a celebrity's domain to me. Well, at least Larry Flynt wasn't elected (though come to think of it, I would have voted for him.. ) But seriously, in general I'm tired of celebrity BS becoming anything more than BS because they're famous *cough*TomCruise*cough*. Oh well, can't blame them for running, blame the people for voting for em . (restricted) | (restricted) |

Originally posted by Havoks No secondary education. Bit of a difference. It may sound like I'm kidding, but I'm not; go to Canada. It's like America, just with different bullshit (and less? I dunno, but no country is without bullshit), and it's cold. But you'll probably have to get a job or something, or see if Canada has some government disability plan. But even more seriously, you piss me off. I'm no patriot myself, but man: #1- Turn off the fucking news, politics are depressing #2- Why do you want indoor smoking? So you can piss off the squares? You know that has serious effects on the health of the employees, don't you? #3- People are stupid enough, you have any idea how much worse it'll be when they never go to school? The crime that'll come of it? #4- Why are you bitching about churches and religious television? I've been an atheist since I was 9, doesn't bother me any, I just learn how to avoid them. And I agree with Snika, good luck on dodging it with a change of location. Originally posted by Snika At first I thought you were full of crap, but then I looked at some inflation-adjusted charts, and it's basically the 1980 energy crisis (Am I the only one who really hates the word "crisis" now? I blame California) all over again. http://www.chartoftheday.com/20030827.gif , That's one hell of a jump since the chart left off, though.

Women can be paranoid, hateful and illogical little things sometimes, can't they? Oh, and you just gave evidence to calling Yiffy Kitten an idiot, Unknown Sion, not to mention saying you want acmlm hacked. And if I'm not mistaken, the bay area refers to the San Francisco area, which is Northern California... |
