Hello, I am trying to hack the old Playstation Tomb Raider games, specifically the first 2. I plan on changing textures in the game, but I have run into a problem. I assumed that all PSX games use the TIM format for 2D textures and I tried to use TIMViewer103c to extract the textures. However, it didn't work and then I remembered someone telling me that TR doesn't use the TIM format, but something similar. I did some research on google as to what format the PSX TR games used, and I got nothing.

So my question is, what does the PSX TR games use for texture formats? Are there programs that would allow me to rip and reinsert these textures just like there are rippers/reinserters for TIM texture games?

Also, is there anyone else out there that has/are working on PSX TR projects? Can someone link me to their project webpages?

Thank you.

Yeah, but the PC versions are incompatible with XP, which is why I wanted to make a PSX patch for people to use.

How advance is the PSX hacking scene? I'm fairly new to it.

No, I don't mean hacking as in mods and cheat codes, I mean actual ROM hacking.

To me it doesn't seem too advance since only the TIM texture format seems to be cracked, meaning I can only edit the textures on games using the TIM format and nothing else. I'd try ripping and reinserting the images manually, but the most l33t thing I've done is pass first semester C++ at a university with a B-, so I don't even know where to begin.

So does it look like the PSX hacking scene will advance sometime in the future?

Well, it would be hard to hack the ISO. I mean, looking for something specific in one huge file. I'd just leave the game in it's original format and copy the files I need to hack (or attempt to) to my HD then make a CDRW of the game I'm hacking and transfer the modified files to the CDRW.

So, I guess it's still ROM hacking.

I would stop being a script kiddie and do it manually, but I can't seem to find any beginner's text guides on how to rip and reinsert textures in a PSX game.

I really hope the PSX hacking scene advances.

Yeah, but not just translating. Graphics and texture editting in 3D games, too.

Hmmm. This is a wild guess but I think it may be possible to use a hex editor to rip and reinsert textures. Problem is, the only l33t thing I know is basic C++. I don't know what sort of complicated math formulas I should use to find these textures.

I also have a question, are there any debuggers for use with PSX emulators? This way I can get a clue as to where in the hex code a certain mesh or texture is.

I know a GameShark for a regular PSX is a debugger, too, but my PSX console is old and freezes A LOT.

Also, what would be a sign that tells me where a texture begins and ends in the hex code?

It had a few good resources, but...eh...

Maybe they are in the middle of a redesign too?

romhacking.com died on July 22, 2005. The admin, Inverse, was arrested (no one knows why) and since he never updated his webpage or the MB on account of being in jail, the site died.

Heck, why do you think I am posting here, bugging you guys with my questions.

Can someone link me to some text or explain to me how to rip/reinsert 2D graphics into a game using a hex editor? Believe me, I have searched all day and cannot find any comprehensive beginner's manuals.
