I am new to the world of rom hacking, and my first project will be editing sprites on a pokemon game (advance generation). I hope to one day get to the point where I can edit enough where it will be a completely different game in most respects. My question is, what kind of skills will I need to develop in order to accomplish this (besides making and editing sprites), and how feasible of a goal is it? Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I've already made a few sprites (using RSball by the way) and inserting them into sapphire...

1st problem: I'm using MS paint and it will only take 16 color bmps... so when I make a sprite and then save it as 16 colors it screws up all the colors (computer problem.. not w/ rsball)

2nd problem: to make it even worse, when I import the bmp into rsball it screws things up further and makes all of the white pixels black... making a cruddy black box around my horribly pathetic looking pokemon...

any help would be greatly appreciated....

hmm.... I would use unLZ.GBA or PokePic, but I can't get them to load. It says that a required .DLL file, GDIPLUS.DLL was not found. Any suggestions? Thanks for the responses so far..

I am hacking sapphire and I think the only complicated things I want to do with my hack is:

1) Create a new type

2) Create new moves

my question is... how feasible are these goals, and what are the best way to accomplish them? I know that for the new moves, I could simply edit an existing one I wouldn't be using (say for instance... I want to make a new dragon type move called 'dragonsfire'... I should be able to put the animation for flamethrower over an old move 'blaze kick' and then say.. make the color blue to look nice... is that how it should be done?). As for the new type, I'm clueless... if anyone has any thoughts, feel free to share.

hmm.. I was looking at baseedit and under types it has one that is called '???' Does anyone know what it is for, and if it can be used to make a new type?

I'm fiddling around with Sappy (doing a pokemon sapphire hack) and it just seems like it's only able to play the songs... I was hoping to be able to write my own songs (I have finale and can get it to a MIDI format). Is this possible with this program, or would I have to go about it another way? Thanks.

good point Krusty... or I could just get rid of the move curse (I could use that move to change it to a new move for instance) and just let the eggs be the new type until it hatched (it can't battle or learn any attacks anyway)... it would be a little ghetto, but wouldn't altering a contest type mess up the contest system? (i dunno)

what do you mean by repoint the list? Please explain in as much detail as possible. Oh... and I figured out how to edit moves and what not... only thing I still really need to learn how to do is make a new type and learn how to edit the palletes.

is there a program out there that lets you edit the TMs and egg moves a pokemon can learn? If not, I figure it will probably be a pain in the butt to change them... and I'm not even sure how I should go about doing it. Thanks.

I have PokeAmplifier and it doesn't let you edit the TMs and egg moves a pokemon can learn... what it does let you do is edit its base stats, type(s), evolution type and how or at what level it evolves (only has one slot for this though... don't know how I could make multiple evolution paths like eevee), what it evolves into, and the moves that it LEARNS. Great program BTW, but doesn't do this.... so if there is no program, how could I hex edit it? Don't even know where to look in the code or what to look for....

To make it a bit easier on those who would want to play my rom hack(s), and also to make my life a million times easier... I came up with a little idea that might just work. We all know the pokemon games come in pairs (ie. R/S). Pretty much the pairs of pokemon games are (in the info they contain) the SAME game with minor differences (this is why I'm baffled that I get suckered into spending $30 dollars to get pretty much the game I already have just to catch a handful of pokemon that didn't appear in the wild in the other XD... good way to make money without much effort though... anyway.. off topic...).

Soooo... using ONLY the sapphire rom couldn't I just completely change the pokedex to my new pokemon (and just not have all of them availible in the wild), edit the maps and text and what not... at this point I have the first game.

From this point I should just be able to copy the rom, rename it, change some of the pokemon you can find in certain locations (so between the two games you could catch them all), change the text (inserting the new name in place of the other new game), edit the legendary found (possibly making minor changes in the map), edit the title screen, edit the evil 'insert name here' to another evil team.... and have the other corresponding game? You should still be able to trade in between them.. right? All of the pokemon exist in the other game... just not availible in the wild. If it worked though... I would only have to really make one rom hack to have both of the games.. just a thought.
