It's never to late to get into Norwegian Communist Rap, you know. (all those red links are links to their mp3s, which may be downloaded legally, since that is their own website).

Karl Marx predicted that the capitalist system he saw rise in his time would crumble because of the inequalities it made. The working-class would be abused by the owning-class untill the day that the inequalities were so big that the working-class couldn't take it no more, and started a revolution. Marx's revolution never happened (not on a large scale, anyway), because of the implementation of social democracy and labour laws in western countries. In stead of being abused, the working-class were given minimum wage laws, work environment laws, etc. thus making them all middle-class citizens with a decent enough life, and no reason at all to ever start a revolution.

On the global scale, however, inequalities have grown large. And now, the third world, tired of being the abused, are revolting. Not an organized revolution, for the people of the third world are too many and too diverse to be joint under one common banner, but rather small acts of revolution here and there. Not only international terrorism, but also small scale things such as theft, vandalism, violence, etc. Nothing that will better the situation of all the abused permanently, as Marx predicted, but rather something that might better the situation of the one person for some time.

In countries where you have a large, broad middle-class, you have stability and security. In countries with large social differences, you have instability, high crime rates, and a breeding ground for terrorism.

I'm not saying you can stamp out terrorism completely, but if everyone lived a regular middle-class life where happiness was only a new sweater at the mall away, you'd see a lot less of it.

You're quite correct. I think I managed to mix the words differences and inequalities, and get indifferences, which I am quite aware what means, though it must have somehow slipped my mind while writing that previous post. Thank you for correcting it, though, as I'm sure it would have confused some readers.

It's interesting, though. While I would call myself a fluent English speaker, there are always going to be a possibility for mistakes made, as well as a chance that some colloquialisms and idioms might confuse me (as it would other non-native English speakers). Besides, the ability to write a post with a certain eloquence is something that would come easier to a native English speaker.
All in all, I guess what I'm trying to say is that it's sometimes harder to participate in these debate forums when the language you use is your second language.

Oh, and for the sake of having done so... *thwap* Capital Z, damnit!

Haven't gotten to go anywhere this year.
I guess there are three different annual festivals that would be really fun to go to; T in the Park, Glasto, and Roskilde. Of those three, I think I'd prefer T in the Park. And who knows, maybe I'll get around to going there next year?

Well, I'm a big supporter of this pullout, and I've been following what's been going on with the settlers quite closely in the media over the last months. I'm afraid things might go bad, though. Already, people have started setting fires to their homes, apparantly because they don't want the Palestinians to use the houses once they've moved. I'm afraid things might go really bad, as I saw an interview with two nationalist Israeli women a few weeks ago that said they'd do anything to fight the pullout, and that they were certain they were going to "win". Well, I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Posted on 08-17-05 01:57 PM, in Isreal pulling out of Gaza Link
Jan-Erik Smilden wrote a commentary in Dagbladet (Norway's third largest newspaper), titled The lie about Gaza (Bløffen om Gaza). I found it interesting, so I thought I'd translate it...

Pictures of Jewish settlers being thrown out of their homes in Gaza are now being sent around the world. Those throwing them out are Israeli soldiers. The most extreme settlers claim they've been betrayed, and that prime minister Ariel Sharon has agreed to make Gaza "clean from Jews".

The fact is, though, that Gaza has been occupied by Israel since the six-days-war in 1967. Prime minister Ariel Sharon hasn't done anything that the UN security council hasn't demanded since then. And, unfortunately, there's little reason to believe the peace process will make any progress. The oposite might happen.

USA has been pressuring Sharon to make him abandon the 21 settlements in Gaza. For Israel, it has also been an economic and military-wise burden to protect the 9000 Israeli settlers living among the 1.4 million Palestinians. Unlike the West Bank, Gaza doesn't hold any religious meaning to the Jews. Most Israelis have seen the 380 sq.km. area on the border to Egypt as a pain and a burden.

We should believe Ariel Sharon when he says it's "painful" to leave Gaza. Israel's prime minister has principally not been interested in losing a single sq.m. of occupied territory, neither in the West Bank, in Gaza, or at the Golan Heights. He has a decisive point when he says that Israel cannot keep Gaza because the Palestinian growth in the area is too big. Inside Israel's recognized borders, 5.2 million Jews and 1 million Palestinians live. A total of 3.5 million Palestinians live on the West Bank and Gaza. If the Israelis hadn't pulled out now, the Palestinians would have been a majority inside Israel and the occupied territories soon.

Now, Sharon might have bought himself a few extra years. There is unfortunately little reason to believe that there will be any large-scale pull out of the West Bank after what has happened in Gaza. Sharon has been so kind that he these days also pulls out of 4 small settlements in the northern part of the West Bank. Together with the 21 settlements in Gaza, this means Israel is pulling out 4% of the total number of Jewish settlers. In other words, 96% stay where they are, illegally, according to international law.

Even though the Palestinians in Israel are celebrating the removal of their occupants, is the mood in the West Bank dampened. Sharon has already promised that the large settlements there shall stay Israeli forever and ever. While the peace optimists celebrate the Gaza pull out, the Israelis are expanding their settlements on the West Bank. They keep up the work on the wall and the so-called security fence that keeps the Palestinians of the West Bank out of Israel. Israel is taking more and more land from the Palestinians, claiming to do so for "security" reasons, without the World bothering to care.

And it is security that Sharon uses as an argument for his pull out of Gaza. He has done his part for now, and now it's up to Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas to deal with militant groups such as Hamas and Islamic Holy War to stop all violence against Israelis. If this doesn't happen, Sharon promises to use even more violence against Palestinians than ever before.

"The New Gaza" is an area where 1.4 million Palestinians will practically be locked in. The Israelis control the sea outside of and the air above the small Palestinian enclave, which is also one of the world's most miserable and poverty-stricken areas. For now, Isreali soldiers are also standing lined up along the Egyptian border. Did anyone say anything about peace?

UEFA Champions League Groups:

A: Bayern München, Brugge, Juventus, Rapid Wien
Well, Rapid will be slaughtered, Brugge is good enough to qualify from this group, but most likely it'll be Bayern and Juventus.

B: Ajax, Arsenal, Sparta Praha, Thun
Arsenal generally doesn't do too well in Europe, but they should be able to qualify from this group. Ajax and Sparta will battle it out for number 2, with Ajax being the most likely winner of those.

C: Barcelona, Panathinaikos, Udinese, Werder Bremen
Barcelona got a pretty easy group here. I have Panathinaikos winning second, but both Werder and Udinese are good enough to qualify from this group.

D: Benfica, Lille, Manchester United, Villareal
United and Villareal, I guess. Seems like sort of a boring group.

E: AC Milan, Fenerbache, PSV, Schalke 04
AC Milan end Eindhoven will have this one. Schalke could pull an upset,

F: Lyon, Olympiakos, Real Madrid, Rosenborg
Real Madrid will win, closely followed by Lyon. This group is too much for Olympiakos and Rosenborg.

G: Anderlecht, Chelsea, Liverpool, Real Betis
Chelsea and Liverpool in the same group, could be fun. They'll probably be battling it out for first place in this group, as well.

H: Artmedia Bratislava, Inter, Porto, Rangers
Well, Bratislava will be slaughtered. None of these teams seem to me as likely contenders for the title, but I guess Inter and Porto will qualify from this group.

Brugge has ex-Tromsø player Rune Lange, so I'm with you one hundred percent.

Speaking of Tromsø, the draw for the UEFA Cup is in. Tromsø vs. Galatasaray... Well, it was fun while it lasted, I guess.

Arwon's kinda describing the situation in Norway. We have many people from the Baltic states, Poland, and other former east-bloc countries coming here for the summer, taking menial jobs, living on sustenance, and then going home with enough money to live really well for a really long time. I read about these Latvians in the newspaper who were working for 45kr/hour (7USD/hour) during the summertime here, and acording to them, they made as much as the President of Latvia.

Of course, there are downsides. There have been incidences of doctors going from Poland to Norway to work as cleaning helps, and such. It's not positive for Poland to lose citizens with high education, and it's not positive for Norway to accept well-educated citizens only to offer them poor jobs.

AEK, Lens or Shakhtar. Not that any of them were easy, but Galatassaray was most certainly the toughest.

Yeah, if we can get a cold front within the next two weeks, and snow starts coming down, it could work out.

Of course, because thousands of people dying certainly doesn't hurt the infrastructure of a country at all!

By the way, Jan Egeland, head of the UN's humanitarian work, claims that Katrina is worse than the tsunami, but that less damages and deahs has happened because of preperations etc. He also says that the UN is ready to send help, but that the US has so far not expressed a wish to receive any help.

Late 80s is all about Madchester! The Stone Roses, Happy Mondays, and Inspiral Carpets are three must-haves (especially The Stone Roses. Did you guys know that they're allegedly doing a comeback?). Then you get the 90s, and the wee beginnings of the what would become Britpop. Paul Weller, Suede, Pulp, Blur, culminating in the release of Definitely Maybe by Oasis in 1994.

As for cross the pond, you've got some great noise bands, such as Dinosaur Jr. and Pixies, but this period will be remembered mostly for grunge. Pearl Jam, NIrvana, Soundgarden, Stone Temple Pilots, etc. etc.

We currently pay around 13.60kr/liter ($2.15/liter, $8.14/gallon) for our gas, I think. It's the most expensive gas in all of the country, because of an extra tax imposed by the local city hall. I wouldn't be surprised if it was the most expensive gas in the world, actually, since it's the most expensive gas in one of the most expensive countries in the world, but, heck, you never know.
