Anyone here use Guzzlefish? It's a great place for showing the World your different DVD/CD/Games collections, and also for trading/buying stuff off of other Guzzlefishers. Signup is free, and it's easy to use. If you want, you can check out my collection. I know it ain't too big, but who cares?

Did you know we can't be exactly sure of how the Romans pronounced Latin, and thus the opening statement in this thread is only based on assumptions, not fact?

I would down this bottle of white rum I have standing on the shelf in record time. Then I would probably end my own life. Go drown myself in the river, most likely, they say drowning is a nice way to go, and after having drunk the rum, I would feel no pain.

So, what does everyone's schedules look like this year?

I'm studying three different subjects my first semester at Uni. Ex. Phil (basic philosophy) and Ex. Fac (basic knowledge inside one's selected faculty (in my case social sciences)) are required for every Norwegian student at an institution of higher learning, while Political Analysis is an introductory subject to Political Science, which I'm hoping to get a Batchelor in, in 3 years time.

Actually, Vinland would be the name of Canada, not the US. Leif Eriksson never went to the US. The southernmost Viking settlement found is in Newfoundland (though it's argued they must have been further south, since grapes do not grow in Newfoundland).

And how the fuck often are you going to want to divide by 5? seriously. Only real advantage 10 has is that we have 10 fingers and 10 toes, so that's an easy counting system... For TODDLERS. I think we should all switch to a base 12 counting system. Sure, some people would complain, but screw them.

Base 12 counting system is better than Base 10, yes, but since Base 10 is used in all of the world, the Metric System is better than the Imperial. The ideal situation would be to to have a Base 12-based Metric System, but that ain't going to happen, so out of the two used systems, Base 10-Metric and Base 10-Imperial, Metric > Imperial.

As a person who has been promoting proportional representation at this board for ages now, it's great to see that I've finally got some who agree with me!

They could easily compile 50 unrleased songs. There are tons of bootlegs out there of Nirvana-songs that have never been released on any CDs. This seems great, though it is kind of inconvenient to me. Now I have to make a choice, this or the Definitely Maybe 10-year aniversary DVD?

I'm actually quite sure I'm the only one here who has been a substantial amount of time in both countries in question (11 months in the US and an unknown time in Sweden (vacations, shopping trips, weekend trips, drive-through-Sweden-to-get-to-Denmark-or-Germany, etc.)).

And my vote goes to Sweden. It may not be perfect, but it's definitely a great country.

I like the system the way it is here (in Norway), with Proportional Representation and Parliamentarism (meaning that the Executive Branch (Prime Minister) depends on the Legislative Branch (Parliament). Basically, the party or coallition of parties in Parliament that has the majority (or is the biggest of the minorities), gets the Prime Minister. Should the balance somehow be skewed (because of a representative changing parties, or a party leaving a coallition), then someone else will become Prime Minister). Though the system of Parliamentarism goes away from Montesquieu's traditional seperation of power into three branches, it still works quite well.

hhallahh: That was what I was trying to say, but I formulated myself quite badly. Economic stability, including poverty, will keep suicide rates down, and, well, I don't think I need to explain, you probably knew what I was trying to say...

And you obviously don't know the system in Scandinavia. Welfare Capitalism is a mix of Free-Market and Government Control, so we do not remove economic freedom, it still exists. You should look up on the term Social Democracy (see the section about what contemporary social democrats support).

Also, as a believer in Socialism/Social Democracy (Neither of which is the same as communism), I do not agree with your beliefs that equal opportunity is unjust. A system where smart people will get no chance of doing good, only because their parents are poor, that is an unjust system. Remember, you cannot have true liberty without equality.

In the end, I think it's the belief that this is a more important consideration than raw "efficiency" and picky notions of absolute freedom, or at least that these two things aren't the only considerations, that make a society a society rather than a group of unconnected individuals.

If I understand this the way I think it's meant that I should understand it, I agree wholeheartedly.

As for the rest of the debate, I've had so many debates with Classic Liberals lately, that I am currently not in the mood for another one (besides, my relatively limited connection to the internet would make this debate rather hard to have). Some other time, mayhaps, but I'll just leave the debate to hhallahh and Arwon now.
