My friend woke me up the other day. He called me on my cellphone, I answer in a muffled voice, he says, "sorry to wake you up, but you've got to see this, NRK [the BBC of Norway] are broadcasting cricket!", I reply that I don't see the necessity in telling me this at such an early time and hang up. Anyway, I get up and go out and turn on the TV, and they are indeed broadcasting cricket. At first I am amused, it would be interesting to get a look at this, the most holy of strange commonwealth rituals. I don't think cricket has ever before been broadcast on Norwegian TV, so my friend probably had a point when he telephoned me, it was kind of shocking. So I watch, and this is what I see:

There's a guy from the West Indies there, he throws the little ball-thing, the New Zealander bats it, and New Zealand gets a point. This carries on, with no kind of change at all. After a while, the score is 100-0, and I change channels, kind of confused as of to what the big attraction to this game is.

Later on in the day, I am over at my friend's place. He turns on the TV, and what do you know, they're still playing cricket (how long are these games anyway?)! Only change is that New Zealand has racked up tons more points, while the West Indies have hardly got any points at all (they do have some points now, though, so I'm guessing the West Indies must have had a shot at batting the ball, too). Anyway, we sit down and watch it for a while, and they're still doing the exact same thing as they did when I was watching it in the morning. The West Inderner throws the ball, the New Zealander bats it, and gets a point. So we sit down watching it, and just as we're about to change channels, something actually happens! The New Zealander bats it in a poor way, making it fly high, so that one of the players from the West Indies can catch the ball without it having touched the ground. This, apparantly, causes the guy from New Zealand to be out! "Wow," I think. Do we get to see some kind of change? Will the guys from the West Indies get a chance at bat? "What's going on?" I think. What happens is that New Zealand brings in a new player, and he keeps on batting, while the guy from the West Indies keeps on throwing. I don't think my face has ever been closer to making an actual "" than then. I don't get the point! What's the point in playing this game if all they do is throw the ball, bat it, and give New Zealand a point? My friend was equally baffled. Our exploration of this strange, exotic commonwealth-game left us feeling cheated.

That being said, I can feel your pain, Wrong 'Un. The sport I follow with a passion, football, gets hardly any recognition in this forum (granted, we had the Euro 2004 thread, but except for that and a few low-post threads where only Colleen and I are involved, there's hardly any football in here).

I was born way north of the Arctic circle (around 70 degrees north, actually. About as far north as the northern coast of Alaska), and lived there for 4 years. Those 4 years, I saw a lot of Aurora Borealis, naturally (not that I remember much, I was, after all, only 4-years-old ). And that was the "good stuff", not the poor kind of Aurora Borealis you can hardly make out when you look at it, which you find further to the south.

When I was 4, though, I moved down to southern Norway, and south of the Arctic circle. I now live at around 60 degrees north, which is still pretty far to the north. About as far north as Juneau, Alaska. Anyway, we can still see Aurora Borealis here, but it's not anywhere as good as the kind of Aurora Borealis you can see up where I used to live. You really won't find good Aurora Borealis until you go north of the arctic circle.

By the way, the place I was born actually has its own Aurora Borealis observatory.

But, but, but, but... You are from Britain! The place where 90% of all good music is produced! The place that makes me feel proud to be European when discussing music! Why, oh, why, must you listen to American music?

Hm, as a moderator, I must say I don't feel at home with your description of the staff. Of course, I missed Glenn's ban, since I've been in Oslo for an IELTS-test in the past days. Still, I don't see the staffers as mad with power, or however you want to put it. Sure, some may sometimes be overdoing their closes a little, but this doesn't happen too often.

The Manics, obviously! Great music, and I (surprise, surprise) like their message (though they may be a bit too red for me sometimes). As for favorite MSP songs, I'm kinda boring, and pick their greatest hit, "If You Tolerate This Your Children Will Be Next". I normally don't go with the obvious choice, but in the Manics' case, I'll have to do it, that song is great.

Did they ever find Richey, by the way?

IfWhiteAmericaToldTheTruthForOneDayItsWorldWouldFallApart is great. "There's not enough black in the Union Jack! There's too much white in the Stars and Stripes!"

I sat on a bus in Denmark, singing that song (I was listening to it on my discman). I think I may have sung it too loud though, because this one man looked at me kinda strangely.

My favorite is still If You Tolerate..., though. You know, I had a Great Uncle who went to Spain to fight against the fascists in the Spanish Civil War (which the song is about).

And I think you'd find that my musical tastes are extremely biased towards Britain. With the exception of my Nirvana, Beastie Boys, and U2 CDs, I own only British CDs (nope, no Norwegian CDs, either. This country hasn't produced anything worthwhile since "Take On Me" in 1985 ). There's just something about the British sound which makes it so much greater than the rest.

The Manics are 4 Welsh boys who play politically laden britpop. They grew up in working-class families, and they experienced miner's strikes during their childhood, which influenced them into becoming socialists (or even almost communists). Thus, their music is very red. They are among the few western bands to have played on Cuba in recent years (Fidel Castro even showed up for their concert).

The band has had many big hits, their most popular is probably "If you tolerate this your children will be next" (here where I live in Norway, anyway, I don't know about Britain). They've also won many awards, such as "Best Band In The World Today" (Q Magazine, 1998).

Neat little game for anyone who's a fan of the series, I guess. I couldn't get further than to the first boss, but it really gave me a retro-feeling.

I spent a year in Texas, thus my accent is kind of southern. Of course, I don't have an extreme southern drawl, since that probably takes a lifetime to acquire. It is hard to tell from my accent that I'm actually a non-native speaker (I've fooled quite a few people), but there are still some giveaways.

As for my native language, Norwegian. People in my county,

Slash Dafter is correct. What I said was: "No, that is a common misconception. Schizophrenia and Multiple Personality Disorder (or Dissociative Identity Disorder) are not the same. Schizophrenics can hear voices in their head, but they do not have multiple personalities."

We all learn the hard way.

I'm going for a South African win. Of course, I don't know much about rugby (it's not very big in this country), but I have a rugby-mad friend (he's currently trying to start up a team in this town. I've attended some practices, it's quite fun), and he's been telling me all about rugby (he found an interest in rugby when he lived in Argentina). I think Springboks is such a neat name, so I'm going for South Africa.
