There are some players out there who really know how to play ball, but who act like bastards off the pitch. I think Ibrahimovic, who scored the 4th goal yesterday, is one of them. He seems like he's really full of himself, and I feel that he needs to get down from whereever he thinks he is. Did you know that the guy actually stole a penalty kick once. As in, he wasn't supposed to take it, but he went up and did anyway.

Well, Latvia vs. Czech Rep. is about to begin. The home of Brainstorm versus the home of Staropramen... Tough one. I'd rather have a Staropramen while listening to Brainstorm.
Anyway, Latvia is the underdog in this tournament, so I'm going for Latvia.

EDIT: My GOD what a 1st half! The Czechs were killing the Latvians, but couldn't get a goal, and Latvia went up 1-0 right at the end of the half. Greatest fun I've ever had!
Edit: What the Hell is wrong with that Ref? Marians Pahars was all alone, ready to put 2-1 into a WIDE OPEN goal, and what does he do? Awards the Czechs with a free kick, for something that can't possibly be a foul. The situation? Pahars, a Czech defender, and the Czech goalkeeper all crash in the middle of Czech Rep.'s half. The goalkeeper knocks down the defender, and Pahars gets free with the ball. The ref. blows for a free kick. Now, last time I checked, you don't get a free kick if you're knocked down by your own freaking team-mate! The stupid call ruined everything for Latvia, who I'm sure would have been able to hold off a 2-1 lead (what with the crushed Czech spirits and all), but in stead the Czechs got around to score, and won 2-1. Bah!

I listen to the radio if I'm in the car and some important sports event is on. Other than that, I don't listen to it a lot. I prefer CDs

The horse, 24 out of 25 times, apparantly. However, the other day, Huw Lobb made history, as he became the first two-legged creature to win the prestigeous Welsh Man vs. Horse race. I still really can't believe it, I thought it'd be impossible for a man to outrun a horse.

Humans are getting faster because we evolve, but animals evolve, too. They also evolve quicker, because specific breeding of strong animals are allowed (while you can't do that to human beings). The quarter horse, a horse breed bred to go at a really fast pace over a quarter mile, can go at 47.5 mph. A guy running at 32 mph wouldn't exactly be able to keep it up for a long time, it'd be over a short distance. This race was a very long race, and no man would be able to keep up anything near 32 mph over this distance. Horses also have higher stamina than men, so I really don't see how the man can have done it. And you can't say the horse was in poor shape, or had a bad day. 20 horses were in that race.

I just don't understand how it was possible that the man won.

The match is coming up. As with every time Norway is not in a Championship (which is, sadly, quite often), I root for Germany! The great German team-engine will hopefully show the disbelievers why it's always a foolish idea to count out the Germans. The Dutch may be good, but I'm hopeful that this will work out to the better for the nice guys.

I can handle the draw. Yes, it wasn't deserved, Germany had a perfectly organized defence and undermined the tactics of the so-called superfavorites The Netherlands. Germany proved that they are a team to look out for, and that they, as usual, shape up for the big tournaments. One mistake in 90 minutes lead to one crucial goal, it's not deserved, but that's football.

What pisses me off, though, is that an overrated fool like van Nistelrooij was the one to get to score the crucial goal.

Well, my use of the word "evolve" referred to the breakthroughs in better running equipment and running techniques. It may not have been the correct to use this word, but I used it to compare us with the evolution in the animal kingdom. See, sometimes I feel that what sounds better is better to use, rather than what is technically correct.

*eyeballs Colleen* You will pay for that comment... Somehow, you will pay.

Now, for today's big match. Any thoughts? The Greek defence seems great, and they did edge out the Spaniards in the quals. Spain, however, is a neat little team, and probably won't make the same mistakes as the Portugese. I'm thinking a Spanish win, but I won't be surprised if it goes the other way.

Bah, it's a bad day for Norwegians. Terje Hauge handed out the most undeserved red card ever. The Russian goalkeeper did not touch the ball with his hands. Tsk, tsk.

I'm tired, I'll do stats tomorrow.

Well, yeah, I never thought it looked like a handball, but I was slightly cheering for Russia. Then, when I saw it in slow-mo, I became certain it wasn't a handball. I can see why he thought it would be, but that still doesn't mean it wasn't a wrong call.

So yeah, Russia is out (personally, I'm quite pleased with my title this time, but then again, maybe the fad is getting slightly old), that leaves 15 teams fighting for the gold. Greece is practically ready for the quarter finals. I think they'll make it even if they lose to Russia (i.e. Spain beats Portugal), but all they need is one point to be certain, and from the way they've played Spain and Portugal, they should have no problems getting one point against Russia (or three, for that matter). France will also be ready for the Quarter Finals with a win tomorrow, England will be out, should they lose (strongly doubt that, though).

Biggest surprise to me would have to be Greece, as well. I know they did good in the Qualification matches, but I never thought they'd do this good in the Group stage. Very impressive, indeed.

Euro 2004, Day 5 (June 16th, 2004)
17:00 UT Greece 1-1 Spain
Goals: Gre: Charisteas (66) Esp: Morientes (28)
Yellow Cards: Katsouranis (7), Karagounis (27), Zagorakis (61), Vryzas (90+1) Esp: Marchena (16), Helguera (37)
19:45 UT Russia 0-2 Portugal
Goals: Por: Maniche (7), Rui Costa (89)
Yellow Cards: Rus: Smertin (16), Evseev (21), Alenichev (87) Por: Ricardo Carvalho (24), Deco (85)
Red Cards: Ovchinnikov (45 handball)

Greece gets one point against Spain, and is set for the Quarter Finals with only a draw against Russia. The Greeks, with their great defence, could be this year's surprise team, and question is, of course, how far will they go? Spain will have to go for a very difficult match against the Portugese to see who will follow the Greeks. Karagounis for Greece and Marchena for Spain miss the next match because of yellow cards.
Portugal wins in a controversial match, with a much disputed red card. Russia becomes the first team to be knocked out, while Portugal still has hopes of Quarter Finals. They must beat Spain in their last game, however, and this might prove to be too much for the Portugese? Smertin's Euro 2004 championship is over, as he will not play the last game because of yellow cards.

Group A:
TeamPWDLPts.G+G-
Greece2110432
Spain2110421
Portugal2101332
Russia2002003

Top Scorers:
2 Goals: Zidane (Fra), Larsson (Swe)
1 Goal: Karagounis (Gre), Basinas (Gre), Charisteas (Gre), Ronaldo (Por), Maniche (Por), Rui Costa (Por), Valer

Anyone in Europe should get this month's issue of Q, along with the magazine (which among other things, has a great article on my favorite band ever, Oasis, and also a list of the Top 50 British albums ever), you get a CD called "Essential Glastonbury", a collection of the greatest Glastonbury gigs ever.

Speaking of Glastonbury, anyone going this year? Or Roskilde? There are loads of music festivals out there!

Me, I've never been to a Music Festival, but I'd love to go sometime. I think I'd prefer Glastonbury, although Roskilde seems cool, too.

Well, I guess the reason I think Glastonbury seems like a great festival is because I'm in love with anything that seems remotely Britpop. Britpop may not be in anymore, but it's never died, as far as I'm concerned. You know Oasis is playing at Glastonbury this year, it's the band's 10 year anniversary.

Manic Street Preachers - Ifamericatoldthetruthforonedayit'sworldwouldfallapart

This is, as the title suggests, a very political song (from the Manic Street Preachers? Can't be! ). It's actually an attack on white Americans' indifference to poor people living in the slums. The song has some neat guitar-play, and catchy lyrics (although part of it is sung so fast you'll have to listen a few times to get it all ).

Somebody should at least update the thread title while I'm away (I've been doing some voluntary work this weekend. Got to see Zlatan's goal on a TV with very bad reception).

Colleen: Germany hammered the Latvians and the Dutch. Only bad luck has kept them from winning. They are completely capable of beating the Czech anyway, which if it happens will give them the QF. Besides, look who's talking, Mr. England-will-win-it-all. England should be lucky to even make it to the QF. They stunk agaisnt both France and Switzerland (They couldn't produce anything against France, and up until their first goal against the Swiss, they were like headless hens. After the goal, they weren't too good, either. Even though they manage to keep control of the match, they made some terrible plays. Croatia, on the other hand, played good against Switzerland, and were quite equal with the French (they should have won against France, had the ref. been able to see Trezeguet's handball).

People bitching about mosquitos don't know how bad it can be. I'm allergic to the pesky little bastards. I get bitten, and I get huge swellings.

Anyway, mosquitos ruined next year for me. We have conscription in Norway, so nearly every man has to serve one year in a military branch after secondary school (pacifists may become civil servants in stead of joining the military). I was looking forward to this year, but they wouldn't let me in because of my allergies. Now, everybody I know are talking about how much fun they'll have in their respective military duties next year, while I'm missing out, all because of the damned mosquitos.

Have you seen the way England plays? On TV they showed some examples of English attacks from the Swiss match which showed how England would start a counter-attack which could produce a great scoring chance, but because of terrible tactical calls by the English players, they ended up having to save themselves by playing the ball all the way - through nearly every player - back to James.

Now, as for group A. Spain is OUT! Portugal wins the group (quite surprising from their opening match), Greece takes number two.
