Hey, Colleen, we're actually on our way up! Just a few months ago, we were in 94th, now we've passed Finland for 93rd. We're now better than both Finland and Bosnia!

What Imajin said goes for any nation in the world, though. Dialects can be found anywhere, also in Britian. Take Mancunian and a London-dialect, they're quite different. They also have different slang-words in different parts of the country. In Northern England and Scotland, some people say "bairn" in stead of "children", while people from Southern England and Wales would never say that (this is actually because the Northern English/Scottish regions have been influenced by the Scandinavian languages (namely Danish and Norwegian), where the word for children is barn ). Britain also has a wide range of different sociolects. A factory worker would say that he's "'avin' tea" (which actually means he's eating dinner), while you'd never hear anyone from the upper class use that expression.

Because we haven't had this question at the board after the boardwipe, I feel that it is certainly time that we bring it up again. If not for the fact that these polls nearly always turn into interesting topics, then maybe just for the pleasure for us Coke-drinkers when we can, once more, show the Heathen Pepsi-fans that their drink is simply inferior. So, vote away, people, vote away!

Not having an accent or a dialect would mean that you pronounced every word exactly as they are written. Nobody does that. Written English does not equal Spoken English, and thus we all have accents.

Well, I bought it at a mall in Fredrikstad, Norway, and the price has escaped my mind right now (I'm terrible at remembering numbers). Where to get it in Britain, I wouldn't know.

Actually, MathOnNapkins, Ireland has a pint of Guiness, not a shotglass. That in Scotland could be an animal's stomach, which is what haggis is made out of. England is labeled as having "ninjas and lasers and gold", and Wales is, well, sheep and dirt.

And about your proposition. How 'bout we call football (you know, the one that came first, and where you actually use your feet) "football", and call American football "gridiron"? That's what would make the most sense.

And it's an interesting flash. Too bad it won't help though, England will get killed in the Euro Championships. They'll probably make it past the group stage, but no further than that.

MathOnNapkins: We all know you use your feet for a small part of the game in American football. I've seen many-a-games of American football, and I've also heard Americans use your same exact argument. Well, listen, the main bodyparts used in football to interact with the ball are your feet. The main bodyparts used in American football, however, are your hands. This quote from Wikipedia explains why it's called football: "The name football might seem a curious name for the sport of American football, as the players' feet rarely have much to do with the ball -- kicking the football is only allowed in certain situations and is most often inadvisable. The vast majority of game time involves players holding the ball in their hands as they run. However, the sport is a direct descendant of rugby union football (which in turn descended from soccer), as explained below, and has retained the name." - See, the only reason American football is called football, is because it stems from the original football.

As for calling it gridiron, it makes a lot of sense, since gridiron is a commonly used name for American football.

No, I did not think you were serious, this is the CD, after all. However, this is a discussion I've had with Americans so many times, that whenever someone brings it up, I kinda automatically start debating it. It may be hard to understand, but football is one of the most important things to me (as the Pope once said; "off all unimportant things, football is the most important"), and I react to all attacks on it, even joke ones.

(Edit: I thought that if people were going to vote, it'd be best if they knew what the different bands were like. Thus, I've added three songs that I'd recommend in parenthesis after each band, so that people can aquire them (download ) and listen to them, and thus get a better picture of what the band is like, if they've never heard them)

Nominations (yeah, although I know some of these won't ever stand a chance, I'll nominate them anyway):

Oasis - Rock (Don't Look Back In Anger - Stand By Me - Cigarettes And Alcohol)
The Stone Roses - Rock (Shoot You Down - She Bangs The Drums - I Wanna Be Adored)
Starsailor - Rock (Alcoholic - Good Souls - Silence Is Easy)
Blur - Rock (Parklife - Country House - Song 2)
Travis - Rock (Why Does It Always Rain On Me? - Flowers In The Window - Driftwood)
Steadman - Rock (Wave Goodbye - Carried - Revive) (I decided to nominate Nirvana instead)
U2 - Rock (With Or Without You - Beautiful Day - New Year's Day)
The Rolling Stones - Rock (Sympathy For The Devil - Paint It Black - I Can't Get No Satisfaction)
The Beatles - Rock (Hey Jude - I Want To Hold Your Hand - Yesterday)
Bush - Rock (Come Down - Glycerine - Machinehead)

So, yeah, I like rock.
It's not true, however, as some evil people say, that I only listen to British rock. I've got U2 on there, they're not British, they're Irish!
I know some might have placed the genres a little diferently (Bush under grunge, for instance), but I decided to go with what AllMusic put them as.

Quote, my mother: "What is it with Americans and their belief that whenever a child has done something wrong the best thing to do is to punish them?". Punishment is a rather foreign concept in Scandinavian pedagogy, and is seen as a rather primitive method of raising your child.

Well, happy Beerday. Kinda cool to have your birthday on Svenska Flaggans Dag, no?

And, when you're 18 in Sweden, you can only drink that 3.5% beer, right? You have to be 20 to drink "real" beer, no?

Svenska Flaggans Dag means The Day Of The Swedish Flag (yeah, dag means day). It's the National Holiday of Sweden, like July 4th in the US. From what I've heard, they don't really celebrate the day much in Sweden, but they get a day off from school or something, and all public buildings display a flag.

When a child has done something wrong, he or she needs to know that what he or she has done is wrong, but not through punishment. Punishing your children shows that you look at them as second-class citizens. It may be the easy way out, but in the long run, it's not a good way to go.

You're comparing children to Adolf Hitler? Forget what I said about second-class citizens, you regard them as far less than that, I see.

Punishing your child is the easy way out, a cop-out. Anyone can punish their child when they've done something wrong, and while this may be an easy thing to do, as it might make the child not do the same thing over again, it doesn't educate the child. Children do not need to know that what they've done is bad, but rather why it's bad. Punishing them does not teach them why it's bad. Being a parent means raising your child into becoming as good a human being as it can be, you don't attain that by simply punishing your child.

Hehe, not only have I heard the new tracks, I actually bought the CD a few days ago. It was the Special Edition one, with a Bonus Live Album, containing the Meltdown songs + A Life Less Ordinary, Darkside Lightside, and Burn Baby Burn. On the Meltdown album, I think Meltdown, Orpheus, and Evil Eye are the greatest.
