Man, those are huge... Crono Trigger may not be the best game for this purpose. |

I think d4s made some simple hacks, nothing huge though. And that title is completely pointless. |

I doubt you can insert SPC files. It might be possible to import music from another game using the same music system (never worked with HM), but probably not. There is no specific format for music; it's up to the game programmers to make one up for their sound program, so usually 2 games' sound formats will be different, anything from the commands being in a different order to using an entirely different system (some games even stream low-quality wave files from ROM). Due to the limited memory available for sound programs, the lack of documentation for the sound chip, and the difficulty involved in communicating with it, switching programs mid-game or making a 'fully-compatible' program is difficult if not impossible (especially since one game's program most likely won't respond to another game's commands). |
Now of course, programmers often do re-use the same music programs; for example, most of Nintendo's SNES games use the N-SPC program (I believe Zelda is one of them). However, there's still the matter of getting it into the ROM. SPC files are like a 'save state' from the sound chip; they don't contain the actual music data that you would put into the ROM. Also, instrument sets vary between games, so music from one may not sound so good in another. So in short: No, in most cases you can't import music from another game, and when you can, it takes a fair amount of skill with hex editors and music in general.

Says who? Even a 1GB memory card will hold hundreds of songs, and you can get them up to 4GB. Write a simple MP3/OGG/whatever sound format you want player for DS, put it on a flashcart, and use one of the various GBA media player devices for storage (all that I know of allow DS programs to access the memory card), and you've got a kickass MP3 player for far less than the cost of an iPod, with pretty much whatever ability you want (especially if the program is open source, and I don't see why it wouldn't be). You could add support for NSF, SPC, your own sound format you just made up, videos, etc etc etc. And it plays DS games too. |
And if 4GB still isn't enough, you can just swap cards during play, so long as the program allows for it (not hard to do, just don't try to access the memory card while it's being swapped). Sure it means having to carry multiple cards, but come on... I could probably fit like 50 of those in my pocket. (And they're actually smaller than the image shows, last I checked.)

Why not? |
Do all ranksets have to contain the same number of ranks? I've considered making some but there's just so many...

With Windows, most people use "format c: /y" (even though /y doesn't really do anything) or "deltree C:\WINDOWS /q", despite that neither of these actually work within Windows. |

So when you can barely hold it in, you should go to a restaurant? I'd prefer to just stay near my own bathroom. |

Yeah, if you got it at just the right speed, it'd look like it was blinking or moving slowly backward. Though the speed would vary with resolution. Easier to just make it actually blink or move backward. |

You're the first I've heard saying that. I reset it (unplugged it anyway), and it stopped timing out, but I still can't get into the settings. I was going to update the firmware, but you need to know the hardware version which for some reason isn't printed on mine. |

Neko desu. (I'd write this in actual Japanese but I can't at school. It's not installed. ) |
And I just make simple ASCII art in Notepad, then replace the characters with smilies. Though it only works for 2-colour images.

Interesting idea on spacing out the files... Guess it's kinda like a filesystem. You would have some option in the editor specifying how much space to pad to (like sector sizes on a hard drive). (I'm hoping any editors that come out would actually compress the data... no reason not to. It only makes it easier to do manually, but that's not an issue when it's being done automatically.) |
Anyway I'm pretty sure it's 32MB, or possibly 64. Something like B0000000 - B3FFFFFF. I'd have to check my documents at home.

That'd be easy if the program allows for variable-bit-length fields. SNES colours are just 5 bits of each colour and one left over. |

I'm pretty sure the game was designed to be as NES-like internally as possible. If you look at the controller map, the first byte is the same as an NES's would be, and then the second distinguishes between A/B or X/Y and tells whether L and/or R are pressed. |
Those 0DAx addresses are certainly interesting. If that doesn't work, it may be necessary to hack the controller routine to store more detailed information elsewhere.

It's possible to do ASM editing directly in hex, but it's a pain. As for disassembling, it's possible in theory, but most likely not. First off, the assembler would have problems with those damn 8/16-bit modes. Second, it can't tell code from data, which means not only will your output be wrong, it may have invalid instructions. And of course, no disassembler I know of produces usable output; they all have crap like line numbers on them. |
