Awesome. So we could make a secret area in the castle, that the only way to get to it is to successfully complete a certain level; when you do, it kicks you out into the secret room, otherwise you're back at the entrance. Or maybe you can even make it exit into another level?

There's only one way to enter the slide mid-level, but I think I might know why there are 3 music-setting points. One sets the music when you go through the wall, one sets it if you die in the slide and jump back into the painting (you restart in the slide), and one is unused but needs to be there, for the warp leading back to the main level from the slide. CCM's data supports this as well by having a defined warp point for entering the bottom building from outside even though this is impossible. It may be a technical limitation (all warp points need to be able to warp both ways even if they don't allow it), or just lazy programming (they didn't bother removing unnecessary warp info, or early development builds allowed warping back for quick access).

And even if Nintendo used a different editor for later games, I imagine they'd have used a somewhat similar format. It works, after all.

I'm guessing here, but anyway... the game simply tells the SPC700 to increase the tempo when you hit the last lap. Since the normal tracks are designed for this, they never specify a tempo themselves; the game supplies it at the race beginning. The credits music, however, is not designed for this and thus supplies its own tempo at the beginning of the loop; this means that when it loops, it resets its tempo. A possible workaround might be to tweak its loop command a bit to skip the 'set tempo' command at the beginning.

And I made an SMK music hack... I corrupted an SPC file of the starting lights, so that they went wacky.

First off, you need to learn as much about the game's inner workings as possible, particularly the level format and how the game knows what level data is where. Then you need to learn a programming language. I recommend either VB6 or C.

Pros of VB6:
  • Easier than C
  • Good built-in interface editor
  • Powerful debugger

Cons:
  • Very limited in power and speed
  • Expensive
  • Can't easily be made Mac or Linux-compatible
  • Requires big runtime files for older versions of Windows (and tweaked versions of XP)


Pros of C:
  • Very powerful and much faster than VB
  • No runtimes required
  • Can support any OS (or none at all; you can even make your own OS )
  • Plenty of very good free development tools available

Cons:
  • More difficult than VB
  • Good interface editors are a MASSIVE pain to find


Really I suggest you start with VB if you're completely new to all manner of programming. Once you've got the basics of programming and the Windows API, move to C. (Or if you're familliar with these, don't even bother with VB. ) It's a bit more difficult, but so much better. (You'll get used to the semicolons and case-sensitivity fairly quickly. ) If you're willing to pay for an interface editor (or can make a crack ), Resource Builder is nice; otherwise, PE Resource Explorer will at least allow you to make interfaces (though not menus... it supports them, but doesn't make them properly). (And if anyone knows a better editor, I'd love to hear it. )

Mega Moles are nice, they're like the only sprite that big.

  1. Nice, though the mask looks really odd.
  2. Neat. I like the coins.
  3. YAY FAT PENGUINS! Nice BG too.
  4. BG looks odd with the green and brown together. Water looks great though.
  5. Looks nice, though the green Shyguy is fuzzy. A black outline might fix this.
  6. It's great, I love the border. Though it doesn't make much sense that a square map would leave a jagged shadow.
  7. Cool, but the 'under the ground' segment could use more detail. Make it look like a cave or something.
  8. I love that FG, even though you took it from DW:TLC. BG isn't half bad either.
  9. The green is a tad bright but otherwise it looks good. Is this level supposed to be in the sky or in the ocean? If it's the ocean, your water needs more detail. If it's the sky, some clouds would look good.
  10. All looks good here. I see you're using Lakitu.
