Way awesome. But you do realize Nintendo already released a Super Mario Bros Deluxe for Game Boy Color? Not one nearly this good, of course, but with the same name.

Also, you should make Scribble Land actually look like paper, with the lines and margins and holes, and paths that look like ink instead of solid black.

Not sure, but if it doesn't, you can always hook into the controller code and have all input be ANDed with a byte in RAM. Then you just set one of the bits of that byte to 0, and the button it corresponds to will be disabled. (I should do that. )

However, if Mario dies during this, you may have a problem. You'd be best off hacking the death code to reset it, or just using an address that gets reset to 0xFF between levels if one exists.

I've been trying to make a simple maze out of movement/boost blocks in a vertical level, but it's not working so well. I did have it working great, which took forever, then accidentally deleted it. The problem was that if the screen had scrolled up to a certain point when Mario touched the blocks, it wouldn't follow him up. (Why it doesn't, God Nintendo only knows. POS game engine. ) So I figured instead of spending all night repositioning the blocks AGAIN so that the screen would be forced to scroll up, I'd just edit them to scroll it manually, like so:

This does get the screen to follow Mario, and at lower speeds (though they're too slow; this is meant to be really fast) it seems to work fine. Moving Mario 6 pixels per frame, though, screws up the level layout! Parts of lower screens get drawn on higher ones, though the collision data isn't affected, which seems to indicate that the graphical screen position ($28) isn't getting updated right. The question being, why the hex not?

Yes, it's crazy. I keep seeing signs with ones taped onto them, or ones that read "¯4.9" or "04.9" or even just "104" (that's Liters, too). This better be temporary, or I'm buying an electric car. (Hell, I'd buy a reliable one anyway, expensive gas or not, but with these prices I wouldn't consider any other kind, except maybe one of those hybrids that gets like 120MPG. )

I based it on the original block which used direct page just fine. I'll try the breakpoint and tile-100 idea later. I don't think changing the PPU regs manually will do much good though. For one, the game probably overwrites that anyway, and also, the actual image scrolls fine, it's just that the game isn't updating the screen properly.

[edit] Fixed the crashing; 16-bit subtractions are three bytes, not two. Still doesn't work though. Here's the first area of the level which uses them, which is also the beginning. (I cut off some at the right so as not to give things away, and yes, many of these graphics are temporary.)

The gold arrows are fast movement blocks; so far I've only modified the upward ones. The gold double arrows seen at the beginning and end are boosters (Jump Blocks); rather than moving Mario manually, they set his vertical speed way up. The green and gray On/Off Switches are actually blocks that are solid when the switch is on/off (it's an air lock ), those are just filler graphics until I get proper ones in. When Mario shoots out the left tube, to where the note blocks are, the game displays screen 19 and the lowest row of screen 18; above that it shows the highest row of screen 1B and upward. Other areas get corrupted similarly. The level functions properly, but the graphics are displayed wrong (though once you get past this section and jump up a few screens, they do correct themselves ).

Either way, that shot alone pretty much ensures I'll never play this. A wall and floor of spikes with a moving hole in them, very few blocks, a Big Boo, reflecting Boos, AND several Eeries? And you can beat this without using cheats or a hell of a lot of save states? You must be one damn good SMW player.

Changing browsers would help prevent from happening again, even if it doesn't help now. But anyway, when you say programs can't be opened directly, do you mean like running the program alone won't work but running it with some parameter will? Try running regedit with some bogus parameter and see if you can edit the EXE association back to "%1 %*" ("(Default)" key in HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shell\open\command). Assuming you offed all naughty processes first, that should get them working again. Next you'll want to delete any files created since the infection and possibly a bit before then. (Look for recently-created 'system' files; most of the files in \Windows and \System32 should have the same date.) Reset your wallpaper too. Finally, go to Microsoft.com and download SP1 or SP2; installing these is basically the same as reinstalling Windows. (You can even burn a new install disc with them; installing them from scratch usually has much better results. And yes, it's legal, assuming your original copy is. )

Also last I checked, Ad-Aware and Spybot both have free versions. AAW's is hard to find, but it's there.

The problem with loading graphics, besides not knowing how, is that the game can actually switch tilesets (and possibly spritesets) mid-level. A very cool feature, but it makes editing difficult. You'd have to be able to jump between tilesets at any given time while editing.

Yeah, he keeps running out of bandwidth. I can see them now (2:37 PM), and could yesterday afternoon but not in the evening. Try early in the morning (though you'd be going by the server's time; you'd have to find out what that it ).
