You have the ASM code, right? I'm not totally certain how Metroid works, but you could probably just add something to force certain rooms not to show up, depending on the room number, X/Y location, or whatever else you could use to determine what room you're in. Some sort of room type byte, if it exists, would be especially useful here.

Yeah, #ifndef, not #ifdef. That should do it.

Are these source files all part of the same project, though? If they are, you should only need to include the header once, not in each file.

Nope. The only real way that would work is if 2 sources only supplied half the data, which would be a huge pain. Plus they could probably still treat it the same as if you gave out the actual ROM, since your intention is clearly to do just that.

Now suppose someone made a program which could make relatively cool music out of any arbitrary file, and supplied ROMs for the purposes of playing them as music... I wonder how legal that would be? It's the same idea as the "same data, different output" condition I mentioned before, but applied to the entire file.

It doesn't have save data on it, the game just thinks it does because the save type isn't being emulated right. Do you have the latest version of VBA?

I know C/C++ isn't totally efficient, but it really seems odd to just stick random instructions in that don't do anything.

I bet a list of those functions' addresses and parameters could be really useful.

Well usually the file would have its size defined somewhere, or the game would have a pointer that tells it where the end of the file is. (Mario 64 does this.) That might explain if the game was crashing or extra data was being used near the end of the track but I don't see how it explains the compression problem.

Encryption, I doubt, but it's certainly possible. Checksums would most likely just make the game crash or throw an error if you edited the track at all.

Ooh. I know there's a debug room (accessible via PAR code), but I don't recall it containing anything like this. It only has some simple functions like adding people to your party, free money, etc.

It might be worthwile to find the text for an existing menu, and see if you can find text pointers or something. Reverse-engineer the menu data format, and you should be able to replace another menu with this one. Or you might get lucky and find that the game doesn't use pointers to menu data but rather a menu ID number, in which case you need only change the ID number to access every menu in the game, including hidden ones.

BTW the code for the debug room is 7FF40400, 7FF40501. Go through a door (not all will work, keep trying) and you'll warp to it. (Notice that it appears to be map #0001. ) Found by a certain NeoKamek, apparently.

Don't bother posting a thread about a hack unless you have screenshots or a demo/release. 30 minutes of work is not thread-worthy. After 30 minutes of editing a fresh SMW ROM I had 4 levels edited and some custom blocks and patches... nothing worth showing.
