Maybe you could just do some simple graphics hacks to add those specific Kanji?

We need to figure out the pointers, and preferrably optimize the compression code to match Nintendo's, then we can start working on cracking it.

Niiiice. I thought you meant the Nintendo logo would do something cool though. (Though what you do have does kick ass.)

Anything that...
  • Can't be killed.
  • Disguises itself as a powerup.
  • Laughs at you.
  • Frequently turns invisible or invincible or goes into a wall or some such stupidity.
  • Paralyzes you, disables your weapon, etc.
  • Pops out of nowhere, scaring you half to death, in a place that makes it nearly impossible to dodge.
  • Is the dog in Duck Hunt.
  • Throws things at you from a place where you can't kill it.

Well I never said I'd beat you all. It's likely, but to say that before the game even comes out would be a bit over-confident.

If you have another computer (or even another OS), yes, that's definetely a good way to do it. Some viruses like to nest in the boot sector or OS kernel. Just make sure you don't accidentally infect that OS too. (Plus, since your OS wouldn't be running off that drive, you would have unrestricted access; the system won't be hiding files or not letting you tinker with it.)

(Ever notice emulator problems always seem to come in groups, even when they're with several different emulators? )
Well as usual there's a whole lot of little problems I've noticed recently.

1) When using my joystick (a Saitek P880) in ZSnes, it randomly pulls really sharp to the left or right. It's as if I were mashing the stick, but I'm not. (For that matter, it should be ignoring the stick entirely, because I'm using the dpad.) It works fine using the keyboard and in Project 64 (not in FCEUXD, for different reasons). There's no deadzone settings I can find and recalibrating doesn't seem to help. (I've got all updated drivers and such; this problem comes up every time I re-install Windows, but I always managed to fix it somehow before.)

2) FCEUXD doesn't recognize the joystick or d-pad. I can use the buttons, but I can't assign anything to the directional controls. Also, I get no video in windowed mode.

3) Geiger's SNES Debugger crashes when I disassemble a piece of code and then try to disassemble again, which didn't happen when I used it before. (Latest version, whatever it is. )

4) I can't open the Regional And Language Options control panel (intl.cpl). I've tried copying a fresh one from the install CD and done virus/spyware scans but it just closes immediately. (No window appears, but it plays the 'program opened' sound and then the 'program closed' sound right away - yes, I actually use those. ) The same happens if I try to open the Game Controllers panel from the joystick's software, but not if I open it from Control Panel. (neotransotaku mentioned trying it in Safe Mode, which I haven't got around to yet.)

5) Not a problem so much as a question. I found I can use bitmaps as icons, but what's the transparent colour? White (0xFFFFFF) shows up as black for some reason. (Figures they give you a shut down icon but not a reboot/log off/stand by one. )

[edit] 6) My file associations for .n64, .rom and .v64 keep disappearing and no matter how many times I re-add them Windoze still acts like they're not there. After a couple dozen tries I got them to stick for about 8 hours and now they're gone again for no apparent reason.

This doesn't help much if we don't know what game you're hacking, what the code is supposed to do, and what L0 is.

Odd... They went as far as removing unused letters, but used such a seemingly inefficient system? If they only support (most) Katakana and 4 Roman letters, I don't see why they would need 2 bytes. (And if they did, you'd think they would use a special character to mark Roman letters, not Katakana.)

Alright, so this is a chunk of code I'm trying to hack into Zelda OoT (US V1.2) with a Gameshark:
sw $a0,0000($sp) ;Save $a0 and $a1
sw $a1,0004($sp)
lui $a1,801C
addiu $a1,$zero,8D75 ;Get joypad status
addiu $a0,$zero,0000
lb $a0,0000($a1)
addiu $a1,$zero,0030 ;Value for L+R
and $a0,$a1,$a0 ;L+R pressed?
bne $a0,$a1,.end ;No
nop
lui $a1,8011
addiu $a1,$zero,C089 ;Language addr
addiu $a0,$zero,0000
lb $a0,0000($a1)
addiu $a0,$a0,0001 ;Next
andi $a0,$a0,0001 ;But don't go past 1
sb $a0,0000($a1) ;Store it

.end: ;009344
lw $a1,0004($sp) ;Restore regs
lw $a0,0000($sp)
[original op: lbu $t6,C089($t6)]
jr $ra
[original op: lh $t9,4A56($t0)]

The code is placed at 80009300 in RAM and hooked with the instructions jal 9300 and nop at 803B04C0. What it's supposed to do is this:

1) Read a byte from 801C8D75 (low byte of the joypad input).
2) If bits 4 and 5 aren't set, exit. (Otherwise, L and R are pressed.)
3) Read a byte from 8011C089 (language select).
4) If it's 0, make it 1, and vice-versa.
5) Write it back to 8011C089 and exit.

The problem, according to the game's useful on-board exception handler, is that somehow the wrong address is being accessed, because the first LUI instruction doesn't work. When it gets to lb $a0,0000($a1), $a1 should be 801C8D75, but it's FFFF8D75. I've checked the code against the ASM and tried using $k1 in place of $a1, to no avail. (The exception handler doesn't show $k1, but it does show what appears to be the address that was being accessed, and it's FFFF8D75 just like with $a1.) I can't see any reason why this would be happening...

Here's the actual Gameshark code. It's kinda messy because it's been hacked to use $k1 and thus the parts where $a1 is moved to and from the stack were NOPed out in case that was causing any problems, and other such things.

So F-Zero uses some sort of compressed WAV and Mario Kart uses MIDI? Simple enough.

Nintendo sure does seem to waste space with their translations though. The US Zelda OoT still contains all the Japanese dialog.

What ROMs? Some use 8BPP graphics which you simply can't import into SMW unless you were to convert them and reduce the colours, or they might do funny sprite layering/HDMA tricks. I've seen one game that did a lot of weird stuff to the extent that I couldn't get any of the graphics to look right in a save state.
