Well the problem with that is you need to have a 100% disassembly before you can re-assemble it, at least after making any changes. That means no line numbers, it has to follow proper ASM syntax. Also, all jumps, calls, and pointers must be converted to labels instead of actual addresses, or else any changes will break it because they won't point to the right place anymore. Finally you'll need to locate every single piece of data and make sure it's stored as data in the ASM or external files rather than as code. It's a LOT of work.

It probably does so without checking to see if OAM is accessible first; if SNES works anything like just about every other system, you can only access it during certain periods while the screen is being redrawn. Otherwise it'll just cause bugs, and of course even if it does succeed it'll muck up everything. ...Perhaps a custom block that triggered this could just back up the OAM somewhere and restore it after the call? I'm pretty sure there's a mirror of it in RAM so timing shouldn't be a major problem, and if it is, the game must have a 'wait for vblank' function somewhere. |

I've brought this idea up before... It could work with some custom blocks, though it might be rather glitchy. You would need, at least: -Entrance and exit blocks. These should act solid unless Mario is pressing in the appropriate direction to enter them, in which case it plays a sound and sets a variable which disables all buttons except Start/Select and activates a per-frame ASM hack which moves Mario in the specified direction. If this variable is already set, just move Mario in whatever direction leads into the pipe (as they would get run a few times while Mario passes through them). If touched from the other direction (IE the top and bottom for left/right entrances, and vice-versa) or in any direction by a sprite, they should be solid. Additionally, when Mario enters them they should set another variable to signify that Mario is passing through an entrance block. The exit blocks, which would be invisible, passable blocks placed right next to the entrance, would check this variable, and if it's set, play a sound, slow Mario down and clear the variable. (It'd also be good if they set temporary invincibility for a short time, to prevent getting killed by enemies on the pipe like in DW:TLC. ) -Top, bottom, left and right blocks. These should be solid if the 'Move Mario' variable isn't set, otherwise they should move him in the specified direction. (The variable tells which direction.) -Direction change blocks. These would act the same as the Top/Bottom/Left/Right blocks but would change the direction Mario is moving. This would require one block for every possible change (Left to Up, Left to Down, Up to Left, Up to Right, etc). These would be placed in the very corner of the 32x32 corner area. (Say it changes direction from Left to Up, it would be in the bottom right corner.) -Dummy corner blocks - solid if Mario's in the pipe, passable otherwise, so they don't interfere with changing directions. All of these, except the Exit Blocks, would have to have layer priority enabled as well. |

Very interesting, but there are a lot of mistakes on that site. "I don't remember there being a metal pool in Hazy Maze Cave" - look harder. Also in the one with Mario standing in front of an aquarium, he comments that the coin counter is missing. Perhaps if we consider that the only place such an aquarium exists is in the castle, where it doesn't show the coin counter? Also most significantly, he says they couldn't possibly have run out of space because Zelda was 4 times as big in file size. Sure, but it was stored on a 32MB chip, while Mario's was only 8MB (because why spend extra money on capacity you don't need?). Though I do believe there could be some beta stuff left over. I found some very interesting textures in there...

Argh! I'd forgotten how freaking hard level 4 was! The penguin race AND the snowball thing both packed into one annoying level. That snowball is fucking impossible. Even if I do hit it (which is difficult when Mario won't do a goddamn punch) nothing happens. WTF? And they screwed up the snow too, Mario just will not stop sliding around! It's so annoying! It could literally take 10 minutes to get him to stand in the right spot and stop sliding all over the damn place, just for the goddamn snowball to run him over and fall off the cliff! I don't know how I even did it on N64, I just like ran into it and it ended up on the snowman somehow. All I know is I feel like slaughtering many snowmen. Also is it just me or did they do something weird with the sliding-down-hills physics? It was never a problem in the N64 version, but in this if you fall off anywhere in level 4, or try to stand on a steep slope anywhere, 90% of the time you'll slide right down onto another slope, and another, and another until you fall off and die, and there's absolutely no way to prevent it. (A very nice thing to discover about the tower roof in level 2 when the owl drops you with an unusually high forward momentum, and you slide down and just miss the ground with 96 coins. ) There seem to be various other physics problems like this, and they're driving me mad! It's impossible for Yoshi to cross the break-away bridge in level 2, the piranha plants can no longer be killed by stomping on them, Yoshi can barely climb any slopes, the snow is anywhere from 2-10 times as slippery depending where you are (in some places even crawling doesn't work, wtf?), the characters have an annoying tendency to completely stop moving for a second after triple-jumping or back-flipping (just long enough for the slipperiness to kick in and send you back down the hill again ), and every now and then the camera and/or controls just go berzerk! |

Linky. I'm hoping to go to this, but it might prove to be too expensive, mainly because of hotel and bus prices. Is anyone else here going? Bigger hotel rooms are often cheaper for each individual, so you could save some money. Or if anyone knows a place to spend the night in Toronto without being robbed for as little money as possible... |
Also, I need a way to get there. (Anyone going my way? ) It seems Greyhound (the only bus station in town) doesn't have any info on scheduling that far in advance. What's it usually cost for a ~160KM round trip? (edited by HyperHacker on 02-11-05 08:50 PM)

Heh, pretty much the same here, except only my dad doesn't like it (because it's Japanese ) and he doesn't live here. |
Apparently Northland Buses also services here. Does $47 sound like a good price for a one-way trip? (I do intend to come back, though. )

I'd try to count how many buffer overflows there have been in M$ products, but I'd end up with one. But libpng? I think a lot of programs use that... |

If it was put in just for people with crappy programs like that, bypassing it wouldn't be an issue, because it'd bypass the program too. Really, you should just look for a way to kill the program, like a 3rd-party task manager. They're never any sort of challenge. |

Poop, I completely missed that. Didn't think it would cause an overflow though. |
Say, is there a way to specify a shortcut key in Textpad that will run a program in the directory the current file is in? It'd be nice to not have to switch windows back and forth to compile. (Yeah, I'm lazy. ) And also if it wouldn't crash when clicking Manage Files or Customize Toolbars. [edit] Also, I changed b to a double (yes, I did the casting and such... printing doubles as %I64d gives weird results )... It works, but I'm just wondering if this might cause some problems? I've heard some systems do floating-point math differently than others, particularly with comparing to integers. (edited by HyperHacker on 02-11-05 11:26 PM)

Just the thought of M$ making an anti-spyware program makes me laugh so hard. |
