Even I don't know how it got so much attention. Just leave it go!!!!!!!!!!!!! JEEZ!!

I think Disch directed his post towards the people who acclaimed your hack and gave it a lot of attention despite being only a GFX hack. I wouldn't take it as a personal attack. The hack wouldn't get so much negative attention if there weren't so much semi-honest positive attention to begin with. And that's not really your fault.

Posted on 10-23-05 10:44 AM, in AJAX, RUBY, RAILS - Hosting? Development? Etc. Link
Hi Financial Technology.

Well, first off I would like to say that the AJAX-umbrella technologies are really awesome and can definetly be used for some really fun stuff. However, it's really not the panacea that it is made out to be in the press. I simply mean that there are times to use AJAX, and there are times to use other methods. AJAX Iin correct contexts) simply adds a more responsive and streamlined retrieval of data and delivery of content.

Now, that said, I still think AJAX is badass

Just to clear up a quick point for you: The cool thing about AJAX is that all the work and this "new" functionality is made by additions on the client-side. That is to say that the server/web host doesn't have to change anything with it's current setup whatsoever; the functions and methods are programmed into the web browser itself and utilized by Javascript/JScript (Mozilla and IE's ECMAScript implimentations). So it is somewhat of a misnomer to be looking for an "AJAX server".

Maybe one could say an "AJAX ready server", which most would be by default, as long as they have a database to work with and server-side-scripting software to interact with, of course. That means that the client-side code, the AJAX, does not have to be specifically tailored to a certain language. You could send the same AJAX request to a PHP page as you could an ASP page, as long as the browser supports it and the server has a way of manipulating GET and POST variables (they all do)

Oddly enough, I'm planning on working with Ruby within the next month (which I had planned to do several months earlier but certain projects have been tying me up).

Unfortunatly I don't have a very good answer to your main question. I pretty much develop everything locally and most of my projects are personal or not yet ready for public viewing, so I haven't bought out my own domain yet. Currently I host my projects on space provided graciously by a friend. I have heard that Lunar Pages has some cheap hosting.. and in my opinion, most prices are cheap enough that, even for smaller projects, getting your own domain and space is practical. I'm hoping/guessing there people here who know a lot more about hosting prices than myself.

I have been programming in PHP, and specifically with MySQL database interaction, for quite some time. If you need some advice or consultation drop me an email (gavin.b.lynch[at]gmail.com). Also, if you're looking for solid developers, I can send you a copy of my resume.

EDIT: The almost complete acid soundtrack. I'm going to stick this in the game and hope it doesn't break the nes.

EDIT 2: Well this sucks... Predictably that broken music renders the game totally unplayable. What a shame!

I'm sure it's okay. Besides, we already have a great "freak the user the fuck out" factor in starting this on the already existing Acid Mario hack. Audio wouldn't hurt, but I think we can do without it.

Has anyone considered that just maybe the screenshots shown were simply concept art?? I mean.. I went through almost every directory and there are a -lot- of screenshots detailing a lot of stuff that certainly could fit into an NES game even if the picture was doctored. I wouldn't say it's a hoax as they're obviously doing something with it. I also wathched a .gif movie file of a scene that lasted well over 5 minutes all in 4bpp graphics.. If I was a gambling man, I would put my money on them developing the game from scratch, possibly borrowing routines from the original if they have it disassembled, and of course the graphics and such.

That working .NES file that dwedit posted is only 44kb and doesn't seem to have much code at all.. it could be a stripped rom, or an original creation. I've never seen the FF3j disassembly, so I wouldn't know. But I hardly think it's just a "hoax".

Not mention I also saw a few tools on the site. I didn't really figure out what they do, but one of them appeared to be a name table editor / generator which didn't actually load from a rom as far as I could tell. Unless those tools are also a hoax...

I looked at the site. All I saw was a lot of broken Japanese text displayed as garbage. I didn't exactly feel like poking through some website I couldn't read. For all I knew it was a 404 page or something.

well no offense, and not that I care much, but by that logic why look at any page?? I mean, why would this page be more likely to lead to a 404 than any other?

Posted on 10-28-05 03:43 PM, in FF Hacking FAQ/Running Q&A Link
Although I'm assuming not many people, if any at all, will be able to answer this question, I'll ask it anyway in hopes of finding someone else involved in detailed disassembly of Final Fantasy 1. Basically I have been doing a lot of modification of existing code and luckily a lot of the hacks have needed -removing- of certain features or otherwise altering code that does not need to be expanded. Some of the more complex hacks absolutely need extra space that the rom just does not provide. Such is romhacking/life. However due to the nature of some of my hacks, there are routines that are no longer being utilized by the game that I can NOP out and fill with my own data. The problem is that these routines exist in various banks scattered throught the rom. To effectively utilize them, I need to call FF1's generic bankswapping routine (LDA #${bank_number}, JSR $FE03) to access the new code. However the code I'm calling the bankswap from exists in the"PRG-ROM Lower Bank" ($8000-$BFFF) which means that when I call the bankswap routine, the new bank will be in place of the old code and will be an area I have no control over, as it is a vital routine. That means I need to find free space in routines in the so-called "PRG-ROM Upper Bank" ($C000-$FFFF) which is a "static" area that is never bankswapped by the game and can be accessed from anywhere in the rom at any time. What I'm really looking for are pieces of disassembly that people have identified in the upper bank of the game, meaning any routines or data at or above $C000. If anyone would be able to post their findings of routines above this, it would be greatly appreciated. I would then be able to identify which routines our hack still needs and if I can use that code for my bankswapping purposes.

Although I realize that I might be one of maybe 5 people who have notes on what I'm looking for, here's hoping that I will be readily proved wrong.

Also, as somewhat of an aside, I woud like to point to the Final Fantasy I page over at datacrystal.org (who's contents I am also mirroring at wikiram, just because it's silly to not share the data considering it just requires a copy/paste). I would like to encourage anyone with free time on their hands to comb through this thread and deposit the data into the page I have seeded with a small portion of my personal notes just to get the ball rolling.

The only thing that suprises me is that it didn't happen sooner. Even if the religious fanatics hadn't had a crying fit over their attempt to pack the courts with idealogues, she (by all accounts) would have faced a terrbily harsh confirmation hearing that would have put forth some really serious questions to underline her lack of experience. That said, I didn't actually even hear her personally speak on the subject, so I can't judge her qualifications other than what is provded in the way media speculation. So take what I said as you will.

I do know that Bill Frist himself actually called the President to tell him the Miers nomination was upsetting his constituants (read: the zealots who bullied bush into office with cries of fire and brimestone to begin with), which was probably the straw the broke the camel's back.

What is absolutely insane is Bush getting away with continually refusing to proivde the documents requested by Congress. (True in the case of Bolton many of the documents had seemed trivial, but it seemed to serve no purpose). The "I got re-elected; the people have spoken and have said that they want my campaign promises carried out and that my policies should be put into action" talk can only let you go so far in my own opinion. However I still can't tell if it was entirely a ruse or not... In my opinion, at the time Bush made those statements he still had intended Miers to actually go through the confirmation process, in which case he was serious about the documents, unless he had actually decided to give her signals to retire her nomination before he made those statements in which case he was just setting up his incredibly weak insinuation that Congress was pushing too far and infringing upon his so-called executive privelege (which -is not- just a get out of jail free card, imo ) by the requests.

I'm tired and I'm not reading that for errors so I can't even tell if what I said made sense.

good for you that you don't believe in them, but I would like to point out that the Christian and Muslime god are the same god. They only differ on the role of Jesus. Muslims acknolwedge Jesus as a prophet, and Christians say that Jesus was the son of god and was holy. Muslims think the son of god came years later.

I'm not really sure whether I believe in god or not.. I might believe in *a* god, but probably not the Christian god, and I certainly don't believe that Jesus was the son of god. In my opinion it's just absurd that one religion is correct over another.

Sure, and it would help if you didn't trapse this board adding your own personal brand of ignorance to every single thread with the thinnest amount of substance and highest degree of "argh, why did he post at all" factor. I'm curious as to which browsers people are using, why they are using them, and any complaints and suggestions they have against/at other Web Browsers.

Really what I'm also hoping to accomplish in this thread is a vetting of sorts about Mozilla Firefox. I've seen a few people injecting "firefox sucks" into comments every now and then without any real substance behind those claims and I can't tell if it's just an attempt to go against the so-called counter-culture grain, or some teenage "conformity is teh ghay!" mentality, or on the other hand a legitimate complaint.

Honestly, I use many browsers constantly. As a website developer and as part of my subsequent sick obsession with web browsers in general, I use the following web browsers almost daily : Mozilla 1.7.10, Mozilla Firefox 1.0.7, Mozilla Firefox 1.5 Beta 2, AOL Browser 1.1.4234.1042 (based on MSIE v. 7,0,5112,0), Opera 8.5, Netscape 8.0, and the Internet Explorer 7 Beta.

What is now Mozilla Firefox is my main browser and has been since right around when it changed to Firebird.

Although I have experimented with the Flock developer preview, I haven't had a real chance to use most of it's feautures so I currently do not know much about it. Although it purportedly loads faster than Firefox, a somewhat dubious claim in my own opinion.. but who knows..

If I was to switch to an alternative default browser besides Mozilla Firefox I would most probably go with Opera. It's always been an extremely slick browser and now that it's free of ads.. major orgy action.

But I'll not switch from Firefox in the forseeable future in all likliehood. It's not just the sweet ass-browser itself but the underlying Mozilla platform that is a huge impetus for it's use. I don't know if I've found something that is more fun to work with from a programming standpoint

not to disparage you from gathering opinions from non-US citizens, but it's hard to get a real sense, or anything remotely in depth with just a simple poll. Greatly generalizing and abridging arguments and opinions usually leads to less intelligent discussions. Perhaps you could ask for each reply to explain exactly why, in detail, they feel that way?
