I've been wrokiing on this hack now for over 5 months of 8 hour a day shifts. This will be a revisit and fresh new playthrough of the great classic Super metroid, I keep true to it's classic exploration theme, nothing "impossible" like every other hack. it is a bit more challenging and alot longer, once complete I;m estimating 3 hours minimum to complete..... I don't want much of my hack leaked, so I chose only 2 rooms to show off, hopefully this'll give you an idea of the kind of hack this is going to be....... I believe that a hack is boring if more than one room is truely recognizable

A quick Comparison.... here is the original landing site

And here is the NEW landing site

So, as you can see I'm not screwing around here, and just so you know what kind of hack this is gonna be, check out this pic, it's of the room just left of the new landing site, and in the lower right you will see the ORIGINAL room I edited it from....

Take care all, and I hope this gets you excited!

New Map of Morphball Run.... kinda...

I'm very glad to see you all like what I'm making.... Right now crateria is alot bigger, maybe even 3 times as big as before, in any case I' m now done with west and central crateria, and now have to work on the toughest part, east crateria..... after that brinstar and norfair are gonna get a few touch ups now that I know even more about SM. Anyways, I'm thankful for all the support!!

"I believe that a hack is boring if more than one room is truely recognizable "

So, yeah, I believe that this means all the rooms will be tiled and the map remaped, in fact, heres a teaser screen.... of the new morph ball run..... kinda....

So maps are gonna be completely new

Space...... The final Frontier.....

No, not just a star trek quote, but without unlimited space, this hack would be impossible, and boring...... so I make sure that I have all the space in the world......

I use room A, which only has a measly little 250 bytes of space, I want to make it around 1500 to 2000 bytes.......So I take room A, create New free space for it, and move The address.....

The landing site has a potential 12000 Byte space, currently just under 9000 of that is used.

If I didn't change the room data address then yes, I would be losing free space, but no longer. =D

RY: You might want to start messing around first before you start any major hack. I used the original game and made a few lame changes such as a CERTAIN SM hacks out there, keeping it simple, but making enough changes in a single room.

After practice I dared to add doors, change room demensions andedit pointers to make new scroll plm's and enmies.... I say mess around ebcause you'll learn how things work... How you need to have a room property unknown, to refresh certain grabled graphics when linking improper rooms, ex: Having the door to varia in kraids room, lead anywhere else.

you can see what kind of stuff is able to be done with smile on my topic on the main rom hacking page.

On another note, get used to having a hex editor open continuously while editing, a hex editor is the most useful tool in hacking.

Good luck, and if you're gonna make a hack, make sure you change everything =)

Chibi, SMILE is the ONLY level editor that allows you to edit pretty much EVERYTHING

Xeomega: It's a simple option in smile, SMILE allows for bank expansion, you just need to know how to juggle addresses around =)

Blue brinstar? I've thought about it..... but I never really liked it..... for the most part, no, it's too simple and repettative tile set..... theres only so many layouts one can do before it becomes repettetive.... Mayble I'll go back and change some rooms around. sure it's classic, but I want to make something new....., sorry.....

Xeno: Swapping is rather easy....... example, Say you have scroll data from a huge room...... say 35 bytes..... but you want to make a larger room with scroll data (or smaller) you simply redirect the pointer to point to free space of your need and save, keep a log of the original now free 35 bytes.....

Now, say you are in a nother room and realize you don't need 15 of the 20 plm's.... well then use the 35 bytes to use up 5 plm's from the old scroll data, suddenly you have (15x6) 90 free bytes that you can use for ANYTHING PLM related, scroll related, Door ponter related..., enemy population related!!!!!, as long as you make a list and juggle the addresses around where needed you can easily use new banks, to free up room data, and simply use the old banks for other smaller rooms you want to expand upon.... heres an example of my charts....

Free:
(C5A15F) 5102 bytes
(E7E000)
(E7F000)
Added:
(E6A000)-E6C000
(E6E000)
(E6F000)
(E78000)

Of course the actual doccument is MUCH larger, and I have countless notes on values within the rom. thi si simply how I organize room. it's much like those sliding puzzles where one slot is empty, and you shuffle the pieces around that free sot, only in this puzzle, the free slots keep getting bigger, and used more efficiently

As you can see I've been busy. With Maridia on the verge of surgery, and crateria healing from the operation, it seems that brinstar and Norfair have decided to join in the Plastic Surgery Party while it's going on. Glass tube are now controllable by index and unknown, and once desroyed, they stay broken, no need for events now! Speaking of events Kejardon has helped emensly in allowing (along with the tube plm) for around 200 new events triggered upon certain requirments....no i;m not spoiling how these things work =)

Enjoy the eye candy......

I'd love to release a demo, but I'm afraid that it would ruin a very cool surprise. Lets not dissapoint all of you, but jumping is a bit faster, and if you think you've mastered bomb jumping then you'll have to practice a new rythm. =)

Thanks everyone for the kind words and support! I'm even more motivated to make this as enjoyable as I can. don't expect the game to play exactly like SM, there are a few elements cahnged, but the experience will be everything SM was and more! take care and I'll stab you all while you sleep! =) yay

Whats wrong with the hack? lets see some screens and decide how we can crituque you into doing a better job. starting over is throwing away all time you devoted so far to it. don't just give up, theres a solution foreverything

Posted on 08-07-05 12:25 AM, in Re-Posted Question About My Problem With Scroll Markings In Super Metroid Link
Scrolls can be done through hex editing. use the scroll "S" plm to place a scroll block, its index and unknown values are really pointer to an address in bank 8F ($78000-7FFFF)

basically, if a 3x1 room has a scroll value of 01 00 01 (Blue, Red, Blue) and you want the player to pass through a hole, and have the screen move thorugh the once "dead end" then you would place data in hex, at the address of your choice.

EX: To make the second screen of this test room scrollable you would code
-01 (second screen) 01 (turns from red to blue) 80(stops reading scroll data)
-place this data in the address with the correct pointer,

EX: if the data was in address $7ABFF then the pointerwould be "FF (index) AB (Unknown)" in the smile plm data window of that scroll plm.
-Remember you have to have the new scroll data start at that address.

if your rom has a header, the simply remove $200 from whatever address you placed the data in the rom. (IE change FF AB, to FF A9, or $7A9FF)
