Hm, dunno. Still can't see it. But it would fit the status bar problem perfectly, as the background overwrites a lot of system palettes.
But in no case I'd agree the second pic being too dark. I don't know about you, but I'm heavily tired of overly saturated levels. You can't make a cave look right without a certain amount of darkness.

Germany's ICEs are worthless... they should've been 300km/h fast, but they mostly never exceed 80km/h due to catastrophal design errors with the "Neigetechnik" (dunno how I should translate that )... in France, they have the TGVs, and these can be really fast... 350km/h limit or so I think...

It seems there is none, since otherwise my Layer 3 changes would be erased at the point when my custom ASM is disabled. But they aren't. Yet, I know, there is a RAM mirror for the actually used status bar area. Look up the old memory location thread (-> Sticky) for that.
But, if you want to use all of the screen, yes, you'd have to muck around in VRAM.

Oh my. Don't you think, anyone, that we should have kinda special support board for foreign languages? afaik e.g. eAthena (this funny RO emulator ^^) has a support board for almost every language on its site and it works quite well...

75) Do not change the palettes in a way some borders are evidently lighter than black. It just looks crap.

76) There is a difference between challenging levels and plain crap. A challenging level is e.g. when you have to find the way out of a large log maze. A plain crap level is when you have to jump on 1 block wide ledges on the bottommost row of the level (which you, as you know, only can see the highest pixel of). Never release any of the latter.

77) A single good idea can't be the subject of a whole level. You know, you need lots of them for one.

78) Use real overworld L2 events. You know, with appearing paths and such.

79) ASM hacks aren't neccessary nowadays, but they make your hack look ... you know... sorta exclusive. There are lots of ways of inserting them, such as writing a custom block or using BMF's palette asm caller hack (look @ his website for that).

As for 2), I don't. Since DW3 levels and GFX are too tempting to be reused by you in your hack, and they suck now because of being overused, you know.
In other words, either do as Link2004 said or just download one of the ready music-only patches, because you and I know you wouldn't resist the temptation of making another SMB3 clone hack.

Hi,

(this is the first time I post in this board since the DB crash )

I had this idea for an RPG plot already a whole while ago, and as it is usual for me, I already thought of lots of neat details, which I'm not gonna mention in here ... at least, not yet ...
... well, it's basically following:

*turns wimpy RPG mode on*
A group of (anarchists? nihilists? mad scientists? whomever) (deliberately) causes a chain reaction that shakes the integrity of space itself by densifying information in a way it breaks the (actual) natural law of information being less or equal than the mass it is stored in. As a result, they cause the limits between the worlds to fade.
*turns RPG mode off*
Practically, that would mean (and here comes the actual beginning of what I would call the story) e.g. Secret of Mana's Hidden Continent being next to FF3us's Narshe (stupid example, I know I doubt I'm actually gonna use any of these two locations), Lavos battling Kefka for the rank of the more important villain (another stupid example), Alexander (from Bahamut Lagoon) being depressed because of himself being just a wimpy esper in FF3us (stupid but true, ) or Time Devourer (from Chrono Cross) throwing the Mana Fortress into the Tesseract because of its sheer uglyness (it was about time someone did that at last).
Neither of the above, of course, would ever be used by me (at least I hope so), they're just there to explain the concept.

First of all, what do you think of that idea?
Second, if you like it, which realization would you like best (out of the following three):
* 2D view (like Chrono Trigger)
* 3D, but on prerendered levels (like Chrono Cross, Xenogears, Legend of Mana () or whatever) - chars might be undetailed, since I'm sucking bad at 3D graphics.
* entire 3D (like Unreal Tournament, Doom or whatever... can't think of any RPG example for that) - same as 3D prerendered, but might as well apply on the whole scape, here.

I shall be thankful for any kind of responce.
And please forgive me my orthography/grammatical mistakes, since I can hardly keep them out of such a lengthy piece of text. Kthx.

~Blacky.

Meh is located in the lonesome rural town of Dresden. All alone. Nobody wants to play with me...

Instead of that, I frequently encounter (weird, isn't it?) some people living in towns that were subject of one of our goddamn English lessons (e.g. BMF in Spokane - we did a lesson about that town too, although the year's main focus was on some nest called Issaquah, which should be somewhere around washington (the state) too).

Sure there are some people on the board I'd like to meet rl, but (a) I'm not sure whether they'd like to meet me (see above) and (b) do I have neither the time nor the money (which are literally the same) to leave my continent or even just this country.

The most realistic theory for the biblian flood story is that the bosporus (or whatever it is called in English, anyways, the passageway between the Mediterranean and the Black Sea which Istanbul lies by) broke through, thus causing the whole area that is being the Black Sea nowadays being flooded (in other words, the Black Sea didn't exist before).
In a recent release of National Geographic, I read something about only 12% of US citizens believing in Darwin's theory of evolution, whilst 48% entirely believe in the Genesis (aka biblian creation tale).
I wouldn't like to see this thread advance into a discussion about religion (since everybody hates me for my opinion about that, anyways... well, most of my class do), though.

First of all, Chrono does speak, yet, his speech is limited to dialogue decisions ("What are you gonna do?
- Go ahead.
- Rest.") and a single phrase (something like "didn't you say you were going to make a little slide show") in one of the endings.

Second, I doubt I'd ever want to insert C(h)rono because he (imho) is one of the most senseless/non-original character that ever were in a squaresoft game (sorry for insulting any of you Chrono fans... CT was a great game, anyway), being the mix of Super Saiyajin and Sephiroth he is (i.e. the average jap fighting game character).

Third, (@cpubasic) I think of myself being quite good at designing dialogues (might be overestimating myself, though). And I thought of a workaround for being entirely bound to another character's profiles, namely inserting some characters of my own with the storyline explanation of some other "worlds" having merged with the mass, too.

Fourth, my postlayout broke.

Fifth, (@cpubasic again) I don't want to say my 3D chars will look generally worse than others, but I have the feeling about 3D graphics generally not having reached the optical niveau of 2D graphics yet... that is, in realtime output. And Chrono Cross (as an example) was sorts of spoiled by the lack of detail of the character meshes (well, lack of texture detail was an important factor at that, too :/). Most of today's average graphical cards can't stand a total framebuffer reload of about 10000 triangles per frame, as it would be required for making a more or less detailed character change its pose. At least, my Geforce2mx (;; sorta dies for half a minute when I load an average mesh.

Weird doesn't mean bad, you know. Often, the weirdest stuff turns out to be the best in the bunch (e.g. Xenogears' soundtrack (EXTREMELY weird, indeed), Chrono Trigger's story (seems quite weird until you play the game) or ... ... can't think of any further example now )

Well, I think that's all for now.
(btw: I am still not sure about 2D or 3D, since I mainly need your opinion about 3D vs 2D in general (for RPGs, that is))

Other than that, I like this idea. Although I even failed to come on an MMOG's alliance meeting in Regensburg (too far away for a one day trip during schooltime )

Maybe it is just like with the block code, which passes the map16 number of the current block to the handler routine... why not.

What about the fourth blue koopa sprite (bottom-most row, fourth column from the left)? It looks like it is stoned or such. Can't remind ever having seen that.

N=8? dunno why, that makes me sorta think of SM64's first bowser level do you want to make something like SM64's "you can virtually do anything you want, but in order to get further, you need ... stars"? Nice idea, if it is that way.

Hi,

actually, I never thought I'd post in here again (try to catch me on IRC or ICQ if you really want to know why ), but, there's something really useful I just couldn't keep back.

The thing I am talking about is basically some block code that can enable or disable the background layer 3 (like the castle windows). It is really useful if you can't get around using message boxes in L3-enabled castles (just place an L3-on block below the message box and you should regain L3 immediately after you fall down again, thus hitting the block). The code is a rip-off of the SMW RPG code I was working on lately and basically uses the same principle as SMW's original message box routine does for disabling it.

http://blackhole89.freeprohost.com/l3mblocks.zip (~1KB)

Read the readme (within the package) for further information. And give me notice if the link is down.

Have fun,
~Blacky.
