I think they renamed the SNES version to Thunder Spirits or something... Anyway, it was pretty terrible compared to the Sega version. The Thunder Force series has been on several consoles but TF4 is Sega-exclusive. Thunder Force IV is without a doubt the finest shooter available for any 16-bit system.

Some more unique shooters I can recommend is Steel Empire, a steampunk-inspired shooter with zeppelins and sopwith camels, and Bio-Hazard Battle, which is some weird shooter with organic ships. Then there's Parodius which is... In a class of its own.

For reasons completely unknown it was renamed to Lightening Force in the US (The prequels were still Thunder Force), but kept its original name everywhere else. I have the game in original cartridge form so no cheating for me :p

The world has seen plenty of 'apocalypses' already, killing as much as 95% of all species and destroying all vegetation. But it always recovers. One of those instances was because of a super volcano your little friend was talking about.

I used to play these games, but after experiencing the western counterpart I realized how underdeveloped and restrictive they were.

Well, the ones I like are the ones which venture into more pure adventure territory like Seiken Densetsu and Terranigma.

I'm not sure what the hell this topic is about anymore...

Ocarina of Time was radically different from the past overhead-style Zeldas, nobody whined about that. Changing the concept doesn't mean Zelda Kart or Zelda Bowling.

As for the RPG discussion, the Japanese ones are extremly restrictive, uninteractive, and most of them cling onto very simplified sets of D&D rules that should have been trashed 10 years ago. And when they make things like Xenosaga, you start to wonder if they want to make games at all. If you have an epic plot idea you want to make a reality, but have no ambition for things like gameplay, you're in the wrong industry. You want to make movies, or novels, or crappy sprite webcomics.

Posted on 09-13-05 08:01 PM, in another thread of genre specific discussion.. shooters! Link
Gradius 3 and R-Type 3 are the best shooters on the SNES.
Thunder Force IV is without a doubt the best Mega Drive shooter, and also the best 16-bit one.
There were plenty of shooters on the NES but not many that could really stand out, except Recca which was extremly impressive. Everyone should check this game out, it's intense like shit for a NES game with tons of on-screen enemies and effects with practicly no slowdown.

Overall I was pretty disappointed with the stuff available for 32-bit platforms. Thunder Force 5 was a huge, huge letdown. I also tried that PS1 Darius, but I never liked that series at all. I have yet to try R-Type Delta. For now Einhänder is the best game from that era, it suprised me that Square could make a great shooter like that. They should stop milking the FF7 cashcow and concentrate their efforts on a new shooter.

Since I don't own any next-gen I haven't played any of the new shooters like Gradius V or R-Type Final which is a shame. I do own Ikaruga though. Strangely I didn't find it very entertaining at all, in spite of being a big Treasure fan.

I think Run 'n Gun is a better term for more platform-based games like Contra, Metal Slug and Gunstar Heroes as they are pretty different from their spaceship counterparts. I urge you all to check out Batman & Robin for Mega Drive which shares many similiarities with Gunstar Heroes. The graphics are extremly impressive, the gameplay is great, and the music eats hand-grenades for breakfast and rapes your mom at the same time. The only thing that stops it from being truely excellent is the pacing, some levels like the flying part are much too drawn out. Nevertheless, it's the best Batman game I've played, better than the NES one.

I got the game last Friday, and it was worth every penny. I have some beefs with it though, the artist from the earlier games is gone and replaced by really generic manga artwork, and the touch-screen features mostly just feel dumb and forced. The game would have been just fine without it.

Like AoS, you have a very varied selection of weaponry so you can choose a style which suits you the best. You can also upgrade your weapons with certain souls. I've upgraded my brass knuckles twice now and so far it's my favourite weapon. I pwned the Puppet Master boss with it, but the limited range presents a problem with the next boss...

It's just like the past games, it depends on how much time you spend on getting better equipment and gaining levels. I'm level 73 and have the best great sword, knuckles, spear, club and short sword. Most of them are very useful in different situations and every boss is a piece of cake (Last boss becomes a joke ), I think I've spent around 16 hours with the game in total.
